Marvel Heroes to start selling limited edition costumes

One of Marvel Heroes’ big money makers is the game’s sale of iconic costumes for player heroes. In addition to creating and selling normal costumes, Marvel Heroes will begin rolling out limited edition costume variants this Saturday.

The first batch includes three costumes: Winter Soldier Movie (Maskless Variant), Hawkeye Hawkguy (Sweatpants Variant), and Star-Lord Movie (Headphones Variant). As the “limited” implies, there will only be a certain number of these on sale, and once they are sold out, they will be gone forever. Each costume comes with a special power (to display the limited edition seal), an emote, and a title.

The forums have been awash with heated debate over whether or not this is a good idea, with the topic pushing to 96 pages thus far. Will artificial scarcity plus sweatpants equal big profits for Marvel Heroes? Stay tuned and see.

Update: Gazillion announced that the costume variants will no longer be limited editions, but will be sold for a limited time (two weeks) with a price matching guarantee if it ever reappears in the store.

Estranged KenAddeh eLdritchMD Litterally how I play. Jump in, play a mission or two, then log off. I can only handle it in short bursts for the time being but It’s cool.

Give it a try, and hey, if you don’t like it you can just hop out and try a different game.

Just wondering who couldn’t wait to get their hands on these.

Estranged eLdritchMD It’s actually quite fun. I was on the fence as well after playing it for some time. Recently got back into it and I’m enjoying it.
I’d not played Diablo but I’ve played a whole lot of diablo-likes. I feel this is more like Torchlight a lot less taxing and mind-boggling than something like Path of Exile.

What is going on here? A studio taking feedback and adjusting appropriately to suit the player base?

By GAWD something is wrong here. Are they deaded?

Narayan eLdritchMD yeah 1500 seems very low for a video game. Still think it’s a weird issue to campaign over.

Midgetsnowman Narayan eLdritchMD those two things are nothing alike though.. the hero thing impacts gameplay for starters.

Estranged well, do you like marvel comics? do you like Diablo3?

that’s pretty much exactly what the game is… only big differences is that there’s always other people around and that you can swap between different super heroes more easily.

This really is a good game, I just wish my computer would run it.

I think the “limited time sale” over limited edition is a way better way to handle it. good on them for responding to the situation in a good way. i really like gazillion. they seem like they have chill people working there and in charge.

actually, it reminds me of the same wave we rolled out in beta when they tried making hero gains completely random unless you paid money..which went over similarly well and was one of the major reasons they ended up redesigning the game heavily.

What am I missing?  Isn’t just selling cosmetics what people want from game companies?  Were people upset they are selling cosmetics instead of ingame combat power like EVE and AA?

Agreed. These devs have been pretty player-focused and player-generous thus far.
I think this has been the first time since the launch woes that there’s been a major forum uprising — and the devs listened. Happy endings all around.

Smart devs. As someone once said to me, jokingly, “Rule of business — if people want to give you money for something, let them.” :-)

Fine with me.
I’ll buy the ones I like.

Narayan eLdritchMD Honestly, that was the smart call to make.  I’ll agree that 1500 units in a game of that size is ridiculously insignificant, and not at all cool.

“Lifetime Price Protection” on the V2 announcement is a bit of an oddity – they promise that the costumes will never be cheaper than they are now. Other than that there doesn’t appear to be any difference to existing chase costumes.

eLdritchMD There were much more concerns than this. 122 pages of them. Many well written even & well argumented.
As for your “if you want it buy it” – the main concern was, that huge amount of people would want it. But 1500 units is nothing and people were afraid that it will go poof in seconds and they won’t be able to buy it. And since it was originally intended to be one time deal and never again to be sold, many people who wanted to buy it would be left out with nothing because they weren’t fast enough with credit card. So it would only cause giref and envy.
Anyway, that’s not important now. Devs changed it. No longer limited in numbers, so those who want to buy it now will be able to without stressing out about it.

omedon666 eLdritchMD yeah but what do the limited numbers really change? If someone is enticed to buy a limited skin where he otherwise wouldn’t then that’s just mission accoumplished for the marketing department :P

But in essense it really isn’t any different from your regular cash shop purchases.  I dunno I think is is just blowing something insignificant way out of proportion.

f.e. I find the price per character way more ludicrous in Marvel Heroes…

eLdritchMD omedon666 Well now that it’s only limited time, it’s not so bad.  The thing I was calling silly was the “OMGIGOTTAHAVEITBECAUSEOTHERPEOPLECAN’TAFTERIT’SDONE” impulse.  You’ll find no bigger supporter of cosmetic purchases as a whole than me! ;)

eLdritchMD Well, considering that in almost 2 years since launch it’s the first time such a huge wave of disagreement rolled through the forums, I’d say it’s pretty nice indeed.

omedon666 I don’t really see how it’s any sillier than spending 10$ on some virtual sweatpants for your virtual, spiderman.

Damonvile

eLdritchMD It’s not, it’s just the same people who complain about anything that isn’t free. When they say they don’t mind cosmetic things in a cash shop they mean things they’d never actually want..

what a nice community of sane individuals it must be :P

I don’t get what’s so bad about this… still just cosmetics, if you want it buy it, if not then why do you care?

Don’t really see how this is different from the regular f2p fair or more to the point how is this different from seasonal cash shop items like christmas themed costumes in Rift or some such.

Um, I’m surprised that you ran with THIS news while being so late on it. Between the info coming out and your news, the community already forced the devs to rethink this approach and to change the terms entirely.

Here is the new version:
https://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/175178/variant-costumes-announcement/p1

In short: those variants will be limited in time, but not in numbers. And they will be returning periodically (so basically like current chase costumes).

They already canceled this idea. Now they’re just going to be recurring sales.

I’m surprised the prices are so low, considering they’re “Limited Edition.”
