Massively OP Podcast: Episode 3

Whether it’s talking about a giant’s love for a space hamster or the dire importance of sweatpants on superheroes, the Massively OP Podcast team will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of these significant MMO industry stories from this past week. Well, they’ll probably stop for McFlurries, because that sweetness is the bomb, yo.

Thanks again Justin and Bree for yet again one more example how a professional gaming podcast should be set up and reported. As for EQN, well I am still not sure what exactly they actually have completed. I agree with Bree that maybe they need to speed this process up and start thinking about getting the game out the door in a sane amount of time. Sure would be nice if they could reveal some type of hands on demo.
Crowfall sounds interesting and I sure know that hard card pvpers need a place they can all their own, so to speak.
Keep up the good work the podcast is truly a gem for massively OP!

dreamlitcomics We’re always willing to talk about it, but the blogging/news scene is a little different in Korea and we seem to have fewer sources for overseas games than we’d like. We use what we can, but there is a gap present.

TomTurtle It’ll be part of the show notes going forward. I just used Larry’s intro because they put a lot of work into it and I wanted to get some mileage out of it.

FineFineValentine We know pretty well what Storybricks is — I did a lot of the initial interviews with Namaste about it, and it is cool. But it also does have a lot to do with the AI of the game, which is why the devs even directly mentioned it in connection with AI in that dev stream.

On business models for EQN, B2P might be pretty nice, coupled with their all access. There’s a lot of people who’d buy EQN, then there’s a lot of people who would probably try it out because it’ll come along with their already active PS2 or whatever else sub.

Tali also tells her drone in Mass Effect 3 to, GO FOR THE OPTICS.

I think Minsc and Boo is awesome for Neverwinter. But I’m still waiting for my Kobold race to play as.

I just listened to this, so excuse me if I’m late-to-the-party.

But MAN Justin/Bree, you gotta learn what Storybricks is before you talk about it :P

It has nothing to do with A.I. It has to do with letting players script their own quests and story content. Seriously, just give the video for their own, pre-EQN Kickstarter (that failed, unfortunately) a look, because they explained it brilliantly. SOE… er, Daybreak losing them is a MASSIVE BLOW for what was surely going to be a revolutionary and really cool feature. I mean, you didn’t even know what it is! Especially for a game like Everquest NEXT, that was all about having people customize the world and let people take ownership of the world and really affect change and all that.

Seriously, you guys are WAY OFF BASE as to what that technology was all about. It’s a shame – you guys should know! It’s super exciting. Or at least it was…

Daybreak saying they left stuff in doesn’t make me happy since the game seems to not be coming together anyway (they’ve been tweaking the sh** out of Landmark instead and whenever a game goes so quiet for this long, it’s just hard to be hopeful). This was going to be as cool a feature as the voxel worlds.

Seriously, watch the video guys. In a minute, you’ll be like, “OH SH** – that was REALLY cool!” and you’ll stop talking about A.I. ;)

Yeah, I don’t really expect us to up and switch just like that, but I find that of all the sites I comment on regularly that use either Disqus or LF, I have the least issues with Disqus. Plus, I’m just more familiar with it. You know, it’s not like they’re hugely different or anything, I just sorta got more used  to the one than the other. :D

Rebel Engie Honestly, AOL definitely didn’t get rid of it because of our complaining or the bugs. They didn’t ask our input at all; they just up and signed a contract and bam, now we had Livefyre. And then they didn’t implement it properly, so there were bugs and loose ends everywhere. Story of our life on the network. :p

While some interesting and enjoyable moments are to be had in WoT, over all I have agree that I am not a fan. His writing of female/male characters and their interactions were painful to read. He was also in serious need of an editor who would rein him in and actually edit. lol

Both are “so-so” in my opinion. Honestly I’d rather stay with Livefyre since we already use it.

Feel better Bree.
I have similar feelings towards the structure of MMO guilds. Having a guild is a reward enough in having more people to organize and accomplish larger goals more quickly and easily. Tacking on even more rewards still feels restrictive and cheap. I’d prefer to see activities that anyone can do, but of course having a guild would make it easier to get them done since you’re more organized. That way you’d still have the option to PUG activities and reap the rewards at least to a degree if not to the same amount.
Could you include the names of who is on the podcast in the articles again? When I heard Larry’s intro I hurriedly scrolled the page looking to see if he was on this episode, and I became confused.

breetoplay Gylnne omedon666 Ironwu I don’t remember when it came out, but awhile back Wheel of Time actually had an RPG-FPS hybrid that used the Unreal engine, I believe. It was pretty fun, but I was really bad at FPS games at the time and didn’t follow through to the end.

breetoplay dreamlitcomics New stretch goal for the Kickstarter at 200k:  All MassivelyOP staff will enroll in classes to become fluent in Korean and get dedicated high speed VPNs to bypass regional restrictions to play/cover ALL Korean  MMOs.  As a bonus, any livestreams will be in Korean (with subtitles)   ;)

Syppi omedon666 The gender politics of the series are indeed a mess, but a lot of that is part of the lore of the series (and the rest is because Jordan just did not know how to write women characters very effectively – although Nynaeve and Egwene somehow became my favorite characters in the series).  When men played a role in breaking the world and the threat of that event – through the taint on the male half of the One Power – occurring again, it is believable that there is a lot of mistrust of men in the culture, and consequently it is believable that men come to resent women. You add in the power (both politically and magical) of the Aes Sedai and that opens a whole can of worms for gender.
That’s not to say that I am not sympathetic to not being able to get through some of the middle books. I need to re-read the series again so I can read the last book, and what’s stopping me are those middle books and knowing how annoyed I got with the Aiel spanking rituals.

dreamlitcomics It’s hard to talk about games that have no intentions of launching here, haven’t done any marketing here, can’t be played here, etc. We’re a US site and have access to US games, so that’s usually our focus. We talked about Lost Ark a bit last week, though, and we’ve covered all four of those other games on Massively in the past. Black Desert is probably the biggest, but until the western marketing campaign starts up, we’re pretty limited in what we can say that hasn’t been filtered through bilingual sites.

i think you guys focus too dam much on western games when korean is a huge part of mmo’s also, you guys either blow it off or have some presumption that it sucks even tho it looks better then anything coming out of the west, new games like black dessert, bless, tree of savior, lost ark,
maybe they will suck, but i want to hear some news about it, the west has nothing exciting except for maybe eqn that is a triple AAA game, everything else are crappy INDIE mmo’s that are  poorly animated ugly art style and graphics from the 90s … exception of crowfall

omedon666 Syppi You know how there are some media (books, games, shows, etc.) that trigger a strong negative reaction in you? Everyone’s got a few. WoT is one of mine. For me, it was because I sort of enjoyed the first book — and then found myself slogging through the next six, finding the same plot over and over again, and gradually coming to intensely dislike the poor writing and even poorer characterization.

But I think the biggest turn-off is how very unlikable and unrelatable many of the characters are. The women flat-out hate men and never understand them, and the guys aren’t often better.

I’ll let it be at that and go fold my arms under my breasts to cool down :D

Gylnne Esoteric Coyote Yeah, Livefyre has a few bugs in Chrome, but the really nasty one is the random one where it won’t load at all in Firefox. We’ve spent yet another day working on it and are no closer to a fix, grrrr.

Also, the sweatpants are a reference to the recent slice-of-life sorta Hawkeye series which is pretty great. Toli’s a huuuuge fan too.
