World of Warcraft goes live with Patch 6.1

It may be one of World of Warcraft’s smaller content updates, but Patch 6.1 still squeaks into that category with several quality-of-life improvements to the fantasy MMO.

Players logging in today will enjoy new Blood Elf models, an heirloom tab, certain graphical improvements, support for colorblind players, a racing minigame, and various tweaks to the garrison system. This update may also go down as one of the vainest that WoW has ever done, as a new feature will allow players to take character selfies and then tweet them to the world.

You can watch the video “survival guide” to Patch 6.1 after the break, and don’t forget to read Eliot’s column on what this update is missing.

6.1 or “The patch who never was!”

where is all the money going Blizz? Surely not into developing stuff for WOW.

Bolaum spellotape The layouts themselves are not really much different than the originals – to my eyes, anyway. Yes, they add things to them/take things out. But it’s like you wouldn’t walk in and say “this is totally different; I have no clue where any of this is. It isn’t familiar, at all”. Stone Vigil, Haukke Manor, Brayflox, Halatali … I could go on. Very similar. The architecture is the most “samey” thing about these dungeons. The main (and most important) differences are the encounters/mobs they add, which, in my opinion, are all improvements on their original versions.

spellotape Most hard mode dungeons are complelty new. They have a completly different layout, mobs, bosses, lore,… except Wanderer’s Palace Hard, the layout is nearly the same (2 or 3 rooms are different) but mobs and bosses are different.

If you don’t care about collecting, achievements, quests, LFR, or Blood Elves, there is probably nothing in this patch for you. I see comparisons with ffxiv a lot and it surprises me how ffxiv is lauded for frequency of patches when often the smaller/non-raid patches contain a similar amount of content (or less) to this WoW patch. Do WoW players expect more? I’m not sure, though ffxiv players often strike me as being extremely excited about new patches no matter what is involved (at least on online forums). I make these comments as someone who plays both games and feel like there are two big differences: ffxiv gets more use out of existing content (harder versions of dungeons/trials/tacking on another wing to the raid/lfr), and new quest content dwarves whatever WoW adds in terms of amount. Before anyone wants to list other major differences: yes, I’m aware of them, but I’m just speaking of what I feel like are the two largest differences (to me, anyway).

Let’s see, Slagworks LFR came out over a week ago.  I’ve only gotten in 1 LFR run…spending all my time in 1+ hour queues only logging off to go do something useful.  Yet the premades tool is full of Highmaul groups, and almost no Slagworks groups.  What gives?

The only exciting part of this patch for me was the new blood elf models which look amazing! IMO. Other than that a small part of me wants to resub but I know I will more than likely quit soon after…which they launched more content in patches like FF14 seems to do but different publishers different priorities I suppose…

Not impressed with the patch.  Nothing that I couldn’t have waited for in like the “interregnum patch” “between” expacs …

I am a WoW player … still playing … and have been since open beta … and to me this is the most disappointing patch in the history of the game.  Not worthy of a x.x indication in IT terms … more like a x.x.x.x … those that know will understand.

Blizzard may be excited about all the crap they put in the game but, at least this player is less than impressed.

Best thing about patch 6.1 is that it is behind us and HOPEFULLY 6.2 will drop soon and have some actual content. :P

Pathetic.
But in all fairness, they must be having budgeting problems, small companies like this tend to.
At least we can be glad they are giving us the privilege of buying a nice looking store mount compared to the re-skinned garbage that can be now found in game.

10/10 company score. would unsub again.

After ten years, the game’s engine has fared far better than the engines of newer games. Case in point, SWTOR. It just goes to show the what is possible when developers invest first and foremost in game engine performance instead of voice overs supplied by two-bit actors.

I have always taken some breaks from WOW, but they have gotten much
more frequent since Cata. I wasn’t too fond about MoP at all and missed
about half of that xpac, last raiding I did was in late Cata.
Still,
I kept coming back to keep track of changes, trying out some of the
content. I was actually looking forward to WoD, was really hoping it’d
be great. And it was fun when leveling the first char and building the
first garrison. Then, I quickly lost all motivation, both from the “FB
game vibe” of garrisons and of a feeling of having much to do if you
don’t want to raid in a guild or PVP.
I signed off 3 weeks after WoD
came out, haven’t signed in again, unsubbed around that time and feel
NO motivation at all to sign up again, even when watching my gf leveling
her alts. Never felt so disconnected and uninterested in WOW ever since
I first joined in 05. Guess it’s finally over :/
It’s odd someone
mentions appreciating MoP. I remember not liking Cata as much as Wrath,
but when MoP came out, I started missing Cata, and now that WoD is out, I
almost miss MoP.
I guess I can call myself lucky for having
done the MC anniversary event with a really great group, and a great
raid-leader. We wiped twice, I got the mount and helmet and some nice
screenshots, plus a massive flashback to old days, even though the game
has changed so much.
I am grateful for the memories and the huge
amount of fun I had with the game and the guilds I was in, but I doubt I
will be back this time.

RooWoods When playing in the Gold Saucer earlier I was thinking about how I’ve spent over 10 years in WoW yet the game is a shadow of what it once was due to changes made in MoP and WoD where all my mains no longer even play like they used to. It’s been nice playing FF14 and seeing pretty frequent patches that actually add content.

So does blizzard plan on redoing the entire game graphically bit by bit? Can the engine even pull that off? Would be interesting to see just how far they can push these upgrades.

all I hear is ” ra ra ra im so cool wow is the sux u r a white knight plz hate wow!”
No.
The cool kids lost, 10 million + players won. Get over it and stop looking for wow articles to bash the game in, you lose!

What amazes me is how WoW fans still keep subscribing when Blizzard outside of paid for expansions produces so little for patches . I know people that still play but wont give up even though they complain about this . I think its more a social thing where they have friends in the game that keeps them going . I gave up in 2008 apart from returning for 10 day welcome backs which was one of the best things I ever did because I have experienced many fun mmos but I admit nothing matches those early days in WoW .

Actually like most of my posts it came to me in a nanosecond upon reading the article, and as per usual it pierced the heart of those it was intended for.
When I was a child a teacher told me people are more angered by truth then by lies, and it’s how I approach stuff like this. If you have any more questions ask away.

I’m sorry but in a subscription game, after three months, we expect something more substantial than the kind of patch that 6.1 delivered. I’m glad you’ve found things that you’ve enjoyed. I’m not trying to belittle your experience. However, the lot of us were wanting, nigh expecting, more. So far this expansion has made me really appreciate MoP despite the stupid pandas. This isn’t a hijacking of complaints. I could provide exact details on how WoD has failed to deliver the same amount of content that MoP did. It’s not conjecture. It’s science. The numbers don’t lie. I’m not whining about a game I don’t play; I’m complaining about a game that I do play, that I would like to play more, but the developers would rather coast buy on their 10 million subs number instead of adding a substantial reason to keep us subbed.

Kind of depressing that they called it a major patch and its so thin the big features list on mmo champion includes selfie cameras and a cash shop mount.

What happened to you Blizzard? This lack of polish makes you unrecognisable to the company i bought so much cool shit from over the years.

ThreeSpeed This comment made my day :)

I don’t think I can read the WoW comments thread on Massively. It just seems to be hijacked by people who enjoy whinging about the game who aren’t even playing it.

Thanks Justin for giving the information though. My observations so far
– the garrison pet daily seems to have been nerfed? i had the insect one which almost soloed with one pet.
 – music juke box will be pretty straightforward to get
 – just received an ilvl 665 piece from new follower mission which was nice :)
 – good qol improvements and fixes

Looking forward to raid tonight with guild with buff to shadow priests too :)

I’ve recently come back to World of WarCraft, having been gone since pretty much a month after launch.

It’s interesting for me to compare my own impressions of the game with those of players who have been very dedicated to the game and its world for a very long time.
Not saying that either perspective is “better” or “correct”, rather that the game is so large, and has such a history, that it’s effectively many games in one now, and what one sees in WoW tends to be affected by what one expects to see, coming in …

I’m excited for the Heirloom tab and the Heirloom mount. But I can’t get over how bad the BE males look, to me anyways. His brow is really pronounced, his ears bounce weird, and his muscles got a lot bigger. First thing I thought was how much he reminds me of Moose from the Archie comics. I do like the look of the girls. So there’s that, at least.
And of course, any game that implements more colourblind options makes me happy.

_Ariel_ There are some fundamental issues with WoW, but 99% of the complaints I see are, to borrow your phrase, hipster attacks by people who quite clearly are not actually speaking from personal experience (ie: talk about having no content to finish, when historically small percentages of any game’s playerbase actually completes all content), coupled with it being fairly clear that hardcore players do NOT make up the majority audience of Massively (or, for that matter, WoWInsider/Blizzardwatch).
Haven’t gotten off work to log in, but I’m hearing rumors that they’ve toned down the bounce run animations they had introduced with the updated character models four months ago, which if true, is enough to make my day. :D

Wonder what it will be like when WoW closes its doors, if they ever actually shut it down. Seems like it’s userbase could support it forever sometimes.

My WoW friends are all incredibly disappointed by the lack of content in this patch, especially considering it’s been 3 months since the last meaningful patch, and this expansion has already been very light on the content compared to past expansions. It seems that the more Blizz talks about wanting to speed up the expansion cycle and the cadence of content between expansions, the slower they actually get at it. Rather ironic.
