Massively OP Podcast: Episode 6

When an MMO delivers an update to nerf difficult content, it can cause a rift deeper than that of the North versus the South. Between veterans proclaiming the doom of carebearism and casuals rejoicing over being included, our podcasters wade in to deliver their thoughts before being overwhelmed by the mob.

Also in this week’s episode, llamas! Er, that should be “betas.” A different beast entirely.

Yeah if I was twenty years younger and forty pounds lighter I’d go with that. But I’m not. I’m just under 6’2″ and 230 (I need to drop down to 200 really) and a bike like that would wreak havoc on this body. hehe. I think I’m going to go more for a cruiser, though a small part of me wants to say hell with it and snag that Moto Guzzi. lol

CrowingOne Nordavind Hurbster I do have access, I follow every thread every day on TL as I am one of the testers.

No where does it ever say that LF was considered an AoE. And even if it was, and the initial nerf was intended, it was changed back and the change never hit live. I cannot phantom why you keep insisting on this. I assume you did what I said? You see its still 2 % right, as it has always been?

You even now got the same answer from someone else over on the live forums as you got from me. So, this is me backing out of this comment field. Going in circles like this has no point.

lol! Now you got me drooling over a Shards like GURPs system. Doh. Off to take a nap, I was out driving today looking at motorcycles. A Moto Guzzi cafe racer caught my eye, darn fun looking bike though I don’t think my wrists and back could take the abuse! But man did I smile sitting on it, gotta be something dead in you not to smile while looking at a V7 Racer.

Heh, sorry didn’t mean to intrigue you with some sort of hope for a GURPS based mechanics system. Just a figure of speech, I’ve used many tabletop gaming systems over the decades and by the late 1980s GURPs had become the default system that I used. It was more flexible and allowed me to design campaigns around any genre that I wanted to run a role-playing campaign in. Really a wonderful mechanics system. Allowed you to pretty much do anything and had mechanics for it!

CrowingOne Nordavind Hurbster Leeching Frenzy is not an AoE. It is a passive triggered by an AoE subtype. The effect itself is a personal buff you get for 4 seconds which translates any damage you do, with any ability not just frenzy ones, to a heal.

It was mistakenly reduced in the first TL patch because it contains the keyword Frenzy, then fixed in the second patch. The erroneously change never made it to the live server. (There were three patched on TL before anything went live).

Strip down in-game and you will see that LF has a base is 2 % heal.
Then take a look at this article which hasn’t been edited since January 2013: http://wiki.crygaia.com/view/Leeching_Frenzy

CrowingOne Nordavind Hurbster In the initial 1.11.1 patch on TL it was changed, but as a mistake. The following patch:

COMBAT
Assault Rifles
* (Testserver) Reverted the AoE changes for Reap and Sew, Leeching Frenzy, Outbreak Alert, and Shoot ‘Em Up.

So no, it has not changed on live. It’s your AoE damage that causes less healing, not the leech itself. Still at 2 % base as it always have been.

Nordavind agemyth I can agree that TSW is probably the only MMO that even dips a toe into the horror genre, but my response to most of those kinds of moments is amusement or in a case like The Black House I will think “that was cool”
Maybe I have exposed myself to too many horror games in general and have become an unblinking lifeless shell of a person.

CrowingOne Nordavind Hurbster Leeching Frenzy wasn’t hit by this nerf. It’s not an AoE heal nor an AoE Leech nor a frenzy. The state is set by using a frenzy ability, but the passive does the same amount of healing as before (base 2.0%, increases with heal rating)

What people must do though, is not rely on their AoEs to heal them up. After setting the Leeching Frenzy effect on yourself, you need to take advantage of single target damage when fighting fewer mobs to trigger a bigger heal. Just remember to reapply the LF every 4 second (or when needed) with a frenzy.

Also, take a look at Circulation instead of Immortal Spirit if you have a Destructive Override Module. It gives a HoT  when you afflict, and with the module a Barrier which is up quite often.

agemyth While the game don’t keep you with a constant state of horror, I can’t think of any MMO that does the scary parts better. http://massivelyop.net/2015/03/05/perfect-ten-the-secret-world-moments-that-freaked-me-out/

Hehe, return of the “niche” pronunciation troubles. #nicheissues :P

Cool to hear an MMO take on that Diablo-like loot idea.

Oh my gosh that was such a sweet e-mail. It was so well written and true. Thanks for another podcast episode. :)

I really wanted to love TSW and find a new home there but I honestly struggled with the toughness of the combat. It just seemed such a step up and needed you to be an excellent “twitch” player – something beyond the capabilities of my aging fingers and reflexes.

If this patch is as good as it’s claimed, I could almost be tempted to revisit it – despite the immorality of Funcom and their thieving ways.

The Secret World is not a horror game. It tries to maintain a creepy atmosphere and happens to feature a wide variety of “monsters” from popular horror fiction and folklore, but TSW’s systems and mechanics are nearly incapable of creating the kind of tension required to scare a player.

Sorry, that’s just a dumb nitpick. Thanks for the show.

BeerGnome Niche is originally a French word and they pronounce it “neesh” (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/niche#Pronunciation_2)
In my experience it’s only American english that pronounces it “nitch”: Here in the UK and also in the majority of the rest of the english speaking world we use the French pronunciation.
Both ways are correct – it just depends on where you are from :)

BeerGnome

You know, the pronunciation of “niche” has been bugging me since it first came up in the original podcast on Massively.  I think at that time I found that it can be pronounced both as “nitch” and “neech.”  So I went to research it today while listening to this podcast and found both Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com have it  pronounced as I have been saying it since I first saw the word: “nitch.”   I am not typically a grammar/english nazi, but for some reason that word has been bothering me for a while.  So I can rest easily now that I have said my piece.

And thanks for another great podcast!

salidar I consider a good justice system part and parcel of an open PvP sandbox — which CU isn’t; it’s faction-based RvR — but I didn’t think we were talking about gankbox PvP, were we? More countering the idea that a game with more than two features is feature-creeping.

RooWoods I never saw anyone support the NGE when it actually happened. I went back right after it launched and everyone playing was an animated corpse, shuffling around, going through the motions. It was desolate and desperate and everyone knew it.
(What the NGE eventually became was a much stronger game, but that first year, nope. People supported the idea of SWG, not the NGE, not at first.)
(Also, making overtuned content more accessible, which is what TSW did, is pretty much not even in the same league as the NGE, which completely gutted the game, destroyed the economy and crafting, turned skills into classes and levels, and deleted entire playstyles overnight. The surest sign that people are overreacting to something is when they float the word “NGE” around carelessly by way of comparison. :P)

You can still die plenty in the old content. Just because the Ak’ab have less health doesn’t mean they won’t still swarm you and do those nasty charges. It’s just not as punishingly tedious to finish things off when you’re not being overwhelmed.

I am not sure how much TSW will benefit of this dumbing down of majority of the games content . I suspect the people that TSW attracts are those that want something different from an MMO something with a little more depth and challenge and not the casual gamers and kids who want spoonfed content if that turns out to be the case this will be a huge miscalculation by Funcom .

I think I would have supported the easing of content in the Early game because a lot of people got a bit stuck on Blue Mountain but this was more down to having made the wrong spec in many a case .So perhaps a one time option to let them change it would have been good . But as often happens in such cases Funcom went too far in nerfing Transylvania and Egypt so much .

I’ve seen such nerfs in other games but they are usually done over a period of time so as not to spook their current player base too much and to given them time to get used to the changes but never have I seen any thing on the scale that Funcom did in one week to TSW .

More than once in the TSW chat I saw EPE be compared to Star Wars Galaxies  NGE . But of course when NGE started there were players that supported the changes in forums everywhere but once they realized how detrimental it was to the game they enjoyed these supporters became few and far between .

I don’t think this week marks a new and enhanced era for TSW but it does mark the begining of its decline .

The patch is controversial and a bug riddled mess, we still don’t know if they pulled an “Anet Special” and once again left some of the more important changes out of the patch notes or if they’re unintentional and will ever be fixed, and Syp’s biggest issue is that you have to check a box to get a first person mode. XD

Hurbster Nordavind I really feel that’s a choice. Yes, the basic game play is 1111123 assuming a builder and 2 consumers. However, there is a lot of ways to manipulate things if you want to have it be more complex. But, really, nearly every game out there is basically whack a mole. With TSW, fighting overland, not dungeons or scenerios, I do a 4,7,8,11111,2,3, and if necessary at that point I will add a second round. Things are dead by that point 95% of the time. But there are definitely other ways to play too. It’s even possible to do a blade build that just does focus consumers, and pretty much nothing else. It can do more, but it doesn’t have to.

It really comes down to learning the wheel and making choice that will break things up for you.

Sorry Bree, very much disagree about Camelot Unchained. It’s a pure PvP game as far as combat, and so those who have no interest whatsoever in PvP have nothing to really look forward to. I have zero interest in the game because of this. And I am hardly alone in that.

Giving people the opportunity to be anything they want, ends up having so many assholes and criminals in the game. We have seen this over(UO), and over(EvE), and over(ArcheAge) and I don’t expect Camelot to be any different, except there will be no PvE so fewer targets for ganking. Without rules, without the rule of law in the game in some way, this will be repeated. No game has done a good justice system and until one does, we will never have true worlds, just murderboxes, at least when it comes to open world PvP.
