Sword and Bored: Encumbrance

Our thanks goes to all those who participated in the comments last week. We enjoy reading what you had to say. Keep it up.

At this point, I think we are getting some new readers who might not be familiar with how our main protagonist came about. Back when Massively Overpowered was rebuilding itself after AOL disbanded Joystiq, Massively, and WoW Insider, we realized we needed a logo. Having done logos and other print art after college, I volunteered to do a temporary one. So I went old-school and drew on paper five or six thumbnail images for the crew to look at. On one of the logos, I had a little knight with a chubby belly and squat legs. He was an instant hit with the everyone at MassivelyOP. He quickly become its mascot, and we named him Mo.

Now, on to this week’s comic, which picks up exactly where we left off last week…

Was the other driver not insured? Seems to me that the OTHER driver’s insurance should cover it and you shouldn’t have to be paying for any of it.

Ahh, the days of camping places such as the treants in…South Karana, was it? Yelling out in zone chat for someone to come buy our copper off us dirt cheap (or even give it free) because we were so encumbered we couldn’t move.

We made some newbies happy with that, we did. Until they wanted ALL of it, but all of it would mean they wouldn’t be able to move, either.

Denngar Loyheta maybe he’ll put Mop as his name since Mo is too many few letters. Mo Powered?

I’m actually a fan of encumbrance mechanic as I view it as an anti-farming tool. I been thinking a lot about how MMOs are getting more streamlined and math centric. Then I look at Star Citizen which is striving to be more like a simulation. While I’ve criticized the game for looking boring, It probably more enjoyable to actually play. There’s a lot of roleplay involved in Star Citizen and that’s what they are getting right in my humble opinion.

I know a lot stream lined looting mechanics like auto-loot are highly favorable, but they are giving developers the easy way out of having to design the loot animations. When I auto-loot in GW2, my character does absolutely nothing, I just click and magically my bags are filled with lootdrops. There’s no animation, no hand wave, not even a mail-carrier animal that swoops in and picks up a twelve pound axe. Absolutely lazy development.

I don’t mind streamlining the keystrokes, but I think our characters should carry out the actions. I would be perfectly fine if one-click enabled my character to literally perform the animation for each body in the area. It seems trivial but it goes a long way in making the game feel complete.

Name Mo fits him well. If it translates Miserable Odd.
If my MMO characters had similar experienece, I would delete them out of mercy

Loyheta They could still do it for a “Legacy’ title type naming, like in SWTOR (we had to earn our title, didn’t we?). Maybe Mo has a secret last name that he couldn’t fit and just uses “Massively” or “OP” since his name’s just taken.

LOL… Skyrim in a nutshell.. Pick up the dinner plate and you are motionless.. Drop the 3000 lb dinner plate and walah, instant movement.

Loyheta So..the first thing I noticed was the drive thru sign and a car on the lawn….and then I laughed. Now that I actually read what’s going on that probably makes me a bad person :)

On the class article from a few days ago we came with Mo going to by a bow, but the shop will only allow him to buy it if he also takes an animal.  Because for some reason all Archers are automatically pet classes these days.

Loyheta What is this….that GNC has a drivethru?  No wonder that guy was not paying attention.
Hopefully the car continues to be the only concern going forward.

Damonvile Once me and my companions were packed to the ears and I was walking hours for hours to drag all the loot to my house. I just did not wanted to drop a single item – and the long walk was zen-like. :D

Oh encumbrance, how I don’t miss you.
That reminded me back in old EQ where I was on my bard using my run/levitate song and was organizing my bank. I had all my money and a ton of heavy crafting stuff in my inventory, and for whatever reason I changed out my song. No more levitate, being far overweight and a foot drop ended me faster than you can say “oops”.

Think of it this way:  It’s a good thing you were wearing your car.

Surprised you guys haven’t done a naming joke. Have Mo try to get the name but either have it require at least 3 characters or have him try a dozen bad renames like Mô or Moh lol

Ah, encumbrance (and by extension, carry capacity), the first thing I mod out of any single player RPG!

I grew up a final fantasy packrat, so telling me I can’t carry infinite things bugs the hell out of me!

krieglich Damonvile MagmaFist I totally forgot about that. 100s of hours played and never really thought about how old school that was. I guess it just worked without being annoying or intrusive there.

krieglich Damonvile MagmaFist um … not in my Skyrim yay mods. Oh sorry forgot super hardcore, my mods triple the weight of everything Mo would have to remove all his armour go au naturale to be able to pick up one rat tail and still be able to walk :p

Mo’s Dad – “Hurry up Mo, at this rate it’ll be two weeks past Tuesday before we get there … drop some stuff and lets go!”

Mo – ” But DAAAD, why cant I carry 2 staves, 19 bronze swords, 5 Bucklers, 8 chain helmets, 65 dragonscale, 13 Dragonbones, 5 seasonal hats, 253 loaves of bread, 9 potions that I’ll never use, 1 pair of cloth shoes lvl 1, 88 iron ingots, 99 copper ingots, 65 diamonds, 10 ratails (and thousands of pounds of stuff that a vendor doesn’t even want) !!!”

Mo’s Dad  – ” MO!!!”

Mo – “It’s all good now, I handed in the rattails!”

Luckily I don’t have packratitis ….. I’d love to play a game where the pack was actual size of the goods carried. (And yea I swear those dragonbones get me every time lol.)

While it is a bit funny, the text is kind of small and hard to read in panel #3.  Just some feedback.

Path of Exile kind of does this, but it’s subtle. Early on, your runspeed will slow down if you go from cloth armor to leather, chain or plate. It’s barely noticable, but still kind of cool. You can mitigate this though by tossing some strength into your character through item stats or the passive skill web.

kgptzac It’s an old-school mechanic stemming form PnP days, like everyone else said. But I think it makes for great MMO-related comedy. :-D

camelotcrusade I remember in early EQ making a casual career of converting coins.  I was a druid and could port around pretty easy, so offer someone 80-90% of the value of their copper, port back to a place I could bank easy, rinse and repeat.  Boring work, but between that and paid ports was an easy way to meet people and make money

Encumbrance is one of the things I hate most in some RPG’s. Any one that has it I generally will get some form of mod to remove it. So annoying and not fun.

At first I didn’t get it…. When I understood it I had to think really hard when was the last game I played that had a weight restriction in items carried that would slow the player down if carrying too much stuff.

A common mistake that could have been avoided with an Encumbrance Removal Scroll, purchased at the S&B shop.

I remember in EQ2 when coins used to weigh you down.  Folks would destroy copper in large quantities if they couldn’t be bothered to go to the bank and convert it. Also, an easy way to troll a newbie was to give him or her a massive pile of copper and watch them be paralyzed with “wealth.”
