Shroud of the Avatar gets slammed by DDoS attack

If you're having trouble accessing Shroud of the Avatar's website or game, don't worry -- it's not you. The devs posted a notice on Steam to inform the community that they're currently weathering a DDoS attack and hope to be back up and running normally soon.

In the meantime, there's a new Update of the Avatar to digest, complete with news about a charity tie-in, the breakdown of Release 17, and a link to the game's soundtrack on SoundCloud. You can watch the devs hash out the Release 17 postmortem after the break!

Gridley171 Madda Ask a parent or guardian to come in and reread Madda's previous comment.

Then come back and point to where Madda said Madda was an "Ultima Guru"

Madda Gridley171 As Mikey said above, it is generally 8 and 9 that are considered the the black sheep of the flock.  And I'm 100% totally with you in that 6 is where I started out and 7 was beyond home run, just one of the best rpg's of all time for me.

So yes, despite all your talk of sounding like an Ultima franchise guru, your comments (or just memory?) on the subject seems to fall short, Madda.  But maybe I'll just chalk it up to different tastes.

Siphaed You'd think they would've sought restitution... at the time that it occurred maybe? Also in not doing a simple DDoS years later that'll last for a few days at most at a time when the game is still in Alpha?

There are a ton of people who don't like him, I'm sure. But is the way to show that displeasure by instigating the internet equivalent of a temper tantrum? DDoS's are the work of children, not of adults who might be old enough to remember Tabula Rasa and have moved on with their lives.

Gridley171 Madda It is a damn shame that the two usually considered the ones that sucked are 8 and 9, supposed to be the pinnacle of the series. But totally, 6 was where I started, and 7 cemented me as a fan for life. I even love the pulp Savage Empire and sci-fi Martian Dreams.

TukutoThePumpkinGod If you are over the age of 12 years old then that is a very odd response .

Siphaed  Please provide some evidence that Garriot ever embezzled funds from NCSoft.  In that business relationship only one side (NCSoft) has been shown to be involved in any wrongdoing.  Extended vacations are not embezzlement.  If Garriot had violated his contract NCSoft could (and almost certainly would) have sued him.
And the fact that his name was on the box did not mean the game had to be closed because they fired him.  Plenty of projects with big names attached continue after the named is gone.  As often as not the big name has had very little to do with the actual game (Sid Meier's name appears prominently on the covers of the Civilization series even though he was the lead designer only on the first two.)

Akami Siphaed Elirion there is some validity to that.
Personally I look at it as Richard Garriot had a string of successful games with some stinkers but on balance more good than bad.
Brad McQuaid did EQ and then delivered Vanguard, which while fun was delivered with serious issues that it never recovered from for reasons. Then failed to kickstart his new game twice.  So one good, one with good ideas but bad delivery and a full fail.
For me RG had more of an impact on my gaming development as I played more Ultima games and only really became aware of BM long after his glory year(s).
Different people will have a different perspective depending on their gaming histories :-)

Its an act of vandalism and hopefully they will get caught . But I guess if its some kid sitting in Russia doing this it would be very hard to prosecute .

Siphaed Elirion Always cracks me up that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brad_McQuaid was basically crucified for everything that went on with vanguard, to the point that pantheon failed to fund not once, but twice.

Yet Richard Garriot can do no wrong, is basically the golden boy of MMO gaming, even though he's guilty of some equally shady crap.  @Elirion go read up yourself, plenty to read up on, some of the shady practices RG has employed in the past, some of the things people that have worked with him have come forward to say.

Madda
Ultima 6 and 7 were pretty damn amazing for their times, respectively, and I'd be hard pressed to find just about any Ultima fans that played either of those games in their day and weren't completely gushing over them.  Out of the entire Ultima series, I can pick all of two titles that people can agree sucked.  Two out of a dozen or so seems like a pretty good win/loss ratio to me, but ya...I guess it's cooler to shit on stuff and say, "totally called it!."

Elirion Siphaed
Within a couple years before TR launched, Garriott spent 1 year in Russia training for his space trip (and I'm pretty sure that was bulk of 2007).   His trip was in Oct 2008, the game launch in Feb 2008, so less than 1 year post-launch and he was spending more time away from the project and on his space trip.

Contract law =/= criminal law.  It was a civil issue dealt with a civil suite, not a criminal one.  So nothing about it was "illegal".

It is understandable as the game its self is not what was expected from such man of vision.

Madda

It was probably for every Ultima game since Ultima 5.

If so, completely understandable.

DDoS is ultimate sign of gamer's pettiness. A sad and depressing state of the gamers community when this shit happens, because it creates more problems for true gamers than it does to any so-called "evil developer(s)".

My advice.....watch the Disney movie Frozen and learn from Elsa......LET IT GO!

Xomon extremely unlikely, catching the originating IP and then prosecuting takes alot of resources that just aren't there.
Most criminals would use proxys in other country's that make investigating this sort of thing a nightmare, so its just not done except in extreme cases.

Are there really any consequences for people who get caught DDoSing? I am not being snarky, I just really want to know. Could a company sue someone for doing that? Could they get arrested?

Hmm, I wonder if it is people he scammed out of money with Tabula Rasa while he was gallivanting around in space?  Or maybe it is secretly NCSoft trying to get revenge for him [figuratively] embezzling money from them to fund his spending time training for space and even going to space.  You know, instead of actually developing the game he was paid to develop.

And yes, NCSoft wronged some with the closure of a couple of games -profit or not-.  That is completely beside the point when concerning the drama of Tabula Rasa.  RG's name attached to said project meant that it had to go out with the trash (i.e. him) when getting rid of him; we don't know the details of the contract on the project, but a name on the box is significant enough to know that there are strong ties between the two.    And although underhanded with the whole "he resigned" while in decontamination, in a business sense there is an underlying why they did what they did.  To have to straight out fire him and pay out all those additional benefits, stock options, and so on after he wasted the company's money in such a way that he did.  Nope, they shouldn't have had to do so.
