Age of Conan adds new content for its anniversary… for a price

It seems like it’s been a while since Age of Conan last got a major update, but for its anniversary the red carpet has been rolled out once again. Shadow of Vanaheim is new content offering new quests and locations that scale to character level, with new armor pieces and vanity items available through the adventure. You can buy it right now in the game’s cash shop, or you can buy a collector’s edition for a few more vanity upgrades.

Wait, what?

Yes, the new addition for the anniversary is in fact something that is being sold, which has players understandably more than a little angry in the forums. The official response thus far has simply been to outline what is contained within the pack, but it doesn’t really address the core player complaint that having an anniversary event centering around something being sold feels a bit less than celebratory. Even when what’s for sale does involve a totally sweet bear to ride.

I’m Just the opposite. Never was a Conan fan until I played AoC. Then I picked up on Howard’s stories and Frazzetta’s art. I think AoC captures the essence of Conan beautifully. Fine blend of brutality and beauty.in an adventurous MMO. Where else can you ride a fine steed with the wind in your hair and a broadsword on your back? Slaying your enemies, loping heads, severing limbs, all set in gorgeous environments along with award winning orchestrated music. There is no other MMO out there that offers anything like AoC..

Very detailed review of the new “adventure pack”.  It is a total disaster.

I think Age of Conan should have had sex with their nudity.   It would have been more popular.   People like to boink in games that allow it, but those games are short on ‘game’ beyond that, i think it would have been, well, game-changing.   Just the simplest of features can allow a myriad of RP and gameplay options for the community, as I’d said the other day, all you need is 1 wedding dress and 1 tux / suit and you’d end up seeing weddings held in your games.    Just give them some other things to do besides questing and killing.   None of the A class MMOs have had the cajones to include animated sex like you get in Second Life.   I think the game would be a lot of people’s guilty pleasure, if the MMO part was decent, and Conan’s is.

Naerri Rebel Engie Highest average internet speed in 2014 in the US was 13.7 Mbps in Virginia, which is around 10 hours for 50 GB. Outside of big cities, *lots* of people have far lower speeds than that.

Outside the US, data caps are a big deal and 50 GB is a whole lot of data just to try something you might not play for more than 20 minutes.

You’re right though, “lol living in the 90s noob” up there needs to get with the times!

McSleaz same here, i’ve DL’d and uninstalled 3-4x, never getting further than lvl 40s content.  Anyway, I found my Conan fix in the books and comics, and that’s been a much better experience for the buck (for me).

Midgetsnowman Futabot What do you mean “remember when”… I still pay sub every month….they lie about releases of looong promised content and then when they make sth small like this (instead of finishing what was promised) they expect me to pay extra for it…just bad.

JesLyck I dont think they should be overlapping models like this – both monthly sub and b2p content on top of it.

Should either be free for subbers and b2p for f2p players, or just overall b2p new content model.

Perfect Hero What a silly comment !!!

Christmas gifts are a lot different from actual content . I gather Trion Archeage gave a whole new continent that you could play through and a level cap to 55 for no cost recently . Not that I like AA its some of the worst pay to win about .

If you were such a mug that you paid for those 4 dollar Christmas gifts yourself then more fool you .

There is a sucker born every minute .

wjowski What is a monthly sub of 15euros if not “paying for stuff”????

keysmachine What am I paying 15euros sub every month for?? So they can delay long promised content indefinitely to make low quality money grab like this??!

I’m really saddened  by douche moves like this as I’ve been playing and paying for this game since release…

The way they communicated it and announced it was very misleading aswell…a new low really.

I have a feeling Funcom is in an increasingly desperate situation which is getting worse by them making bad choices in their games . It looks like they are angering the players they already have by charging for this content . It would be fair enough if they had paid DLCs if this game was buy to play but given many of the people that would be of a level to enjoy this new content probably subscribe or have subscribed in the past it seems a bit of a kick in the teeth for them given this is what normally in other games would amount to a festivity and be free even in a free to play game .

They also managed to alienate many existing TSW players with their enhanced player experience which dumbed down the game quite considerably . I would imagine Funcom will go into liquidation within the next few years which is a shame because until recently they have been an OK developer . I gather they have a new man in charge now but if this has happened on his watch I don’t think things are looking any rosier for them than they did prior to his appointment .

I hope you realize that  subscribers have payed for it already? What is our subscription for then? Do not tell me it’s there to keep the servers running because even FC has another game called TSW where you can have unlimited access to the game with B2P model, not to mention plenty of other online games and titles that do not require subscription to run their servers yet they still offer more regular content updated than FC does.
I would like to get someone from FC officials clarifying what is AoC subscription for? If its not there to provide subscribers content like this one then what is it for?
Now, to get things straight, I am perfectly fine paying for content and even paying for content on top of subscription but if is justified with its amount and quality. If this was content like Turan, bringing 2 solo instances, 6 man instance, new raid, open world playfield with a faction I would have no problem paying for it again… This is not the case here, this is a ripoff that was falsely advertised, we have been literally lied here with an advertisement clearly saying there there will be something for everyone in this anniversary not indicating that we will have to pay extra for anything.
So what is there for everyone unless we pay extra money am I missing something?
If this game was B2P I’d have no issues what so ever paying for patches like this one, but its not the case here.
If we’ve been given the content we already payed for and we’ve been promised to get years ago like Palace of Cetriss Raid, Slithering chaos, Craft revamp I might have considered buying this but until then no thank you.
It’s a matter of principle here, not the actual cost. Its the lack of transparency from FC as a company. Meanwhile in TSW they got lifetime Subs, B2P model, way more FC points (1700) for being subscribed and getting patches they can actually spend those points on unlike in AoC where for being subbed we get 200 points a month which expire after six months so even if you wanted to you couldn’t save them up to afford buying patches.

Is it still 50Gig d/l for a trial?
I bought the game way back at release, but the idea of re-downloading that much just to have a fresh look is a barrier-to-entry I have always been reluctant to break through.

keysmachine I don’t think anyone has a problem with paying for it. I think it’s more a perception of you’re having a celebration. You may not want to base your celebration around paid content. Do something else for the celebration then release the content as well.

This is just another case of MMO players wanting EVERY. SINGLE. THING. for free. its disgusting!

Where the hell did this entitlement come from?

Funcom needs to generate more revenue but everything they do to try and generate said revenue players go OMG YOU GREEDY BASTARDS!! YOU’RE ROBBING ME BLIND!! FUCK YOU!!

Well, the biggest problem here is how they presented the content – up until the patch happened, there was not one word about the fact that any of it would cost, and all prior anniversary quesing had been free.  Had they simply explained that the new material they were bringing out would require buying, it would have muffled the grumbling a lot.  The last time AoC had an ‘Adventure Pack’ – Coast of Ardashir (aka Turan) there was a long lead up, Dev video presentation showcasing it, etc. This one just slid in and when ppl logged on after the patch, *poof* we see it costs to get the new content (not talking about the item shop bear, btw).

Funcom is fine to charge for their content.  They are, after all, in business to make some money.
What I would like them to offer is an ‘All Access’ subscription.  They have three great MMOs which have very little overlap, so I doubt they would lose much in having them all available for one subscription.
And I know I would be permanently subbed on a yearly basis, where I am not subbed to any of them right now.
It is one of the reasons I keep DGC MMOs installed and subbed.  Great content, and lots of it, for a reasonable price!
Just a thought, Funcom business folks. If you are listening.

Sixcess as I understand it, the content isnt very good, Its a single solo instance that takes a few mnutes and is mostly re-used assets.

Amd they never mentioned it cost money during any f the hype for it.

If the new content is good I don’t see any reason to begrudge the devs a few bucks for it.  Any AoC announcement that doesn’t include the words “shutting” and “down” should be met by cheers from the players, even if it does come at a price.

Being a game dev would make me either murderous or suicidal.
“your game is a joke, you should pay us to play it”  and other poo flung at them from the wretched refuse of gamer populations.
I would pop off in some nasty kinda way and get banned from any more ‘interaction with the community’.

DPandaren I dont think thats entirely true or fair to be honest.
When the new content was first announced as part of the anniversary event there was zero mention of it being a paid expansion, so with the usual annual festivities being a free quest here or there with some shinies the playerbase was expecting the same.
Whether that decision was one of Funcoms to get everyone frothing at the mouth about it to encourage sales remains to be seen, but to then just patch up an its in the cash shop is a little odd.
Not to mention theres is zero advertising for it, no videos or what not & the only real info was given by one of the devs today post patch on the forums.

Im not complaining about the price, I love AoC an im one of the suckers who will buy the content tonight but some better thought out community management & promotional work from the company itself would lend itself to avoiding issues like these.

I just play this game off and on over the past several months.

My demonologist is still just about level 20 on the first island you arrive on, doing every single quest they can get their hands on before doing the nighttime line.

Recently I made a fighter type, don’t remember what, to be more “paladin-esque”.

I can’t choose much being FTP, but it is a nice diversion. I just wish I could get help doing the bat demon thing. No one is ever around in the ruins it seems to help that is not max level. I don’t want to trivialize the content. I want to experience it like it should be, not steam rolling a mob.

Midgetsnowman Armsbend Right, it’s not that wedding presents are “demanded”. Instead, it’s just socially considered rude to not bring a gift for the couple that is equivalent in price to the meal they are providing.

In the past almost every time an Age of Conan article showed up I would complain about their monetization “strategy” or lack thereof.  This is no exception.  I love what Age of Conan used to be.  I love what it could still be.  I hate what it currently is.

In contrast let’s look at the TERA approach:

TERA Reaper Class Addition
– free
– new class
– free extra character slot

TERA Gunner Class Addition
– free
– new class
– free extra character slot

TERA Fate of Arun Expansion
– free, including level cap increase, new zones, dungeons, monsters, quests, stories, etc..
– everyone gets a free armored tiger mount

TERA 3rd Anniversary
– free ex-TRM mount (think spider robot thingy)
– leveling event, double xp for everyone for a month
– Lots of stuff on the cash shop on sale for 50% off

Now THIS is how you do F2P.  I hate F2P, but I can’t resist TERA, their strategy is just so insidiously good.  It may seem like a lot of free stuff but it’s all about making their game “sticky”, and when they had that 50% off anniversary sale it was like a President’s day everything must go Steam Sale.

The #1 rule of MMO design should be to keep the player playing.  If they’re not playing your game, then nothing else matters.

Midgetsnowman I don’t know anyone who really ‘demands’ a wedding present, but it’s generally considered a thing you should do. Ideally you get one from their registry. Now if they’re your friends/family and know you can’t afford it that’s another matter entirely.

This reminds me of the debacle cryptic started when champions inline was still fairly new. Content gaps made leveling through certain level ranges a pain, so cryptic made a new zone to fail the gap . . .and tried to charge already paying players for it. I laughed sp hard she they backpeddled and gave it as a for free.

I feel like this could have been easily avoided by them separating the ‘Anniversary’ part from the update. Update costs money like updates do, and then for the Anniversary give out some titles or cosmetic junk, life goes on as normal and no one feels spited.

Granted, things for children, like birthday parties are paid for by adults.  Pretty much how this works.
