EverQuest’s new progression server comes online (again)

After a disasterous initial outing and subsequent wipe, EverQuest’s Ragefire server came back online last night to welcome players back to the classic era of the game.

The latest progression server for EverQuest struggled mightily as gamers stampeded through its doors and filled up the world server. “We have several thousand right now and it’s already pretty laggy,” Executive Producer Holly Longdale reported. “We’re keeping an eye on it.”

Daybreak posted a fun nostalgia-laden trailer for the new server which you can watch after the break!

Cramit It’s well done.  The modem sound was abbreviated, but that’s ok…  I enjoyed the faithful soundblaster theme recreation though!
When I was setting up P1999, I really wanted those original FM sounds… wound up tracking down the BASS Midi driver.  It supports soundfonts, and does a good job.  So you can just track down an old SB AWE32 bank and off you go.  https://kode54.net/bassmididrv/archive/
I’m not sure that the modern client supports the original midis anymore… I remember the patch where it actually went in and *deleted* all the existing midi files lol… yay for backups!

Denice J Cook haha Denice… I remember that sound all too well. It still gives me horrible memories of hoping to connect!!!! And it took much longer than what the trailer depicted.  Thank God we don’t dial in anymore like that.

Denice J Cook While EQ graphics aren’t on par with newer mmos the later expansions do look much better than that. Also on the normal servers most of the old world textures have been upgraded as well.

I’m kinda tempted to get a subscription to EQ and do this, it’s been over a decade since I last played.
Should I?
SOW anyone?

You know, I actually remember the sounds of a baud modem, how bad is that?  ;)

“Be kind, rewind” haha!

But come on, does all of EQ1 really look that bad, even today?  ;)

Every server select screen should have a built in chat room to use during downtimes. It is fucking brilliant.

This Holly chick didn’t even know that you don’t get auto-kicked for being AFK and this is supposed to be one of the competent people they didn’t let go.

Zariarn Whatever your racial city is. Modern EQ has the default option of the Drakkin newbie zone for all races now, but Drakkin won’t be on this server for a looong time.

So what’s the starting zone?  Is it the same for the regular servers?

This should be fun. Not even kidding.

Coldrun_MN GoJammit My attention is usually pulled to something completely out of the gameworld anyway when I play like a radio show or tv. Don’t the brain or patience for multiple instances of the same game running. At the worst I may have hearthstone open in the back ground while I’m gathering in an FFXIV

GoJammit Coldrun_MN Yeah.  There are ways around it, like joining a guild and grouping up with them, and the world is large enough, but it can make some of the more popular spots tough.

Actually, that’s an advantage for Project 1999. They have systems in place to stop boxing.  The downside compared with the progression server is that while Project 1999 will stop at Velious with no plans to go further, the official progression server (Ragefire) will eventually open up all the expansions.

Just different experiences.

Coldrun_MN GoJammit By boxers do you mean people playing multiple characters at once?

ITPalg GoJammit Actually, no. I would have seen it as someone attempting to be helpful, though it wouldn’t have been the kind of interaction I was looking for. Mainly I wanted to hear from people who knew what it was personally or even had expereince using it. My reaction to you was because you were simply trying to be a clever smart ass. My bed and the dismount were fine. You were the one with the snarky response.

GoJammit Don’t worry about it – ITPalg just seemed to want to be a jerk for… reasons I guess?  Dunno.

Long story short, it’s not you :D

Anyway.  I’d tried progression servers in the past, and they were okay, but boxers made my experience kind of frustrating at times.

I guess my other option of linking an answer would have been met with sharp glass under foot as well.

Try the other side of the bed next time.

CthulhuDawg GoJammit That’s pretty interesting. I’ve always been pretty slow going through content so I doubt something like this would do a lot for me. Very few game do I even have a max level toon.

ITPalg GoJammit I’m a social guy. Sometimes I like to pretend the internet is more than just a repository for information and a place for people to converse about things that interest them. Thanks for reminding me that when you try to talk to people like humans, I’m bound to run into know it all asscaves as well. I mean really, do you really think I can sit here and figure out how to get to this website and give two shits about gaming and manage to wade here through the ads and the porn and not know how to search for something. It would have been tons easier to do the search but holy shit! I’m in a forum with other people interested in this stuff and they might want to talk about it.  If only a genius like you could have chimed in before them so they hadn’t had to waste there time with a simple answer. Goddamn hero is what you could have been.

GoJammit Basically what CthulhuDawg said.  Another option you can look at if that’s appealing is the Project 1999 emulated servers, which seem to replicate the pre-Luclin experience in a much more stable way from what I understand.

The internet is a wonderful thing.

With my Chrome browser, I can highlight your first sentence, right click, and “search Google for what is a progression server”.
Instant answer!

I played for a couple hours last night. I mostly sat around and talked in /ooc. The server was so crowded last night we had several instances of Gfay maxed out. I logged off earlier than I had wanted though because there are just too many people around to level, too little mobs too many players. They needed to open two servers, which they had talked about. All in all I’m still excited and as the population spreads out it will become much more manageable. I was upset certain things couldn’t be rolled back, luclin models (you can still turn them off), the original UI, Freeport etc but I’ll be back on every night playing around with it to see exactly what I do and don’t remember about the last 16 years.

Hahaha… “Be Kind. Rewind.” What a great tagline for this concept.

GoJammit They roll back the game essentially. In this case they have disabled all 21 expansions, rolled back rule sets and certain zone assets. They also retuned the classes and xp gain back to (or as close as they could) original gains.

What is a progression server? I’ve been hearing about this but haven’t a clue what it is or why I should care.

I’m thinking of making a character. I paid for a time card last night to be able see it. It helps with EQ II and DCUO as well.

The video was pretty awesome.  I almost miss those sounds of modems connecting….
