Marvel Heroes adds Doctor Doom, free heroes for everyone, and more

As I tried to log into Marvel Heroes this afternoon, I ran afoul of the 6 GB patch that Gazillion pushed out to Steam users today. Fortunately there’s a lot of good stuff in this update, including plenty of birthday gifts for you the player in celebration of the game’s anniversary month.

This week Gazillion is treating gamers to version 2.0 of the team-up system, the launch of Dr. Doom, permanent retcons, and more. Next week, everyone gets a free (pre-Doctor Doom) hero of his or her choice! You can read all the details via the patch notes.

Darthbawl BalsBigBrother I’m picking up Deadpool and my son is getting Iron Man as they are 2 of the more expensive characters. Personally, I would get the splinter and G prices on them to make sure your free one “counts”

BalsBigBrother Serious ARPG fans are the ones that don’t like fun.

well, then you dont get how hardcore works

JonBuck usagizero he treats other Doom’s he sees as if they are inferior Doom bots so I imagine the story mode Doom will be similar though I don’t actually know as I do not have him.
From what I have seen of him he does have soon pretty funny one liners though and I may snag him just for those ;-)

Armsbend Midgetsnowman no hardcore mode but try things like cosmic midtown, red raids and the axis event. Those things are tough to do without dying and you will need to be properly geared plus pay attention to what is going on.

As DugFromTheEarth mentions in his post, above, the gigantic patches seem to be a side-effect of the game engine Marvel Heroes uses.

Indeed.

And the debate is endless, and thus, pointless — most people just throw their personal opinions at each other angrily until the debate goes stale for that round Ultimately, the classification debate doesn’t matter nearly so much as “Is it fun? Are you enjoying yourself?”

Cheers,

BalsBigBrother I’;ve been using she-hulk team up 2.0. Its hilarious watching her throw briefcases at people to initiate fights before she charges in.

Wakkander That would be pretty intense and fun.  But I’d settle just for losing a character in hardcore and getting bumped down to scrubcore.

Armsbend Midgetsnowman Hmm, what if they had a hardcore mode that simply had all heroes unlocked, but when one died, you permanently lost access to it in hardcore mode?

DugFromTheEarth DJjazzy After the “Patch” it actually had to go through the first time setup on my machine. So I can’t really call it a patch.

usagizero I wonder how they’re going to handle it in dialogue when it’s Doom vs. Doom at the end of the game’s storyline. In Industry City when playing Loki, after defeating himself during one of the event phases he says “Nobody defeats Loki but Loki!”

Midgetsnowman It’s nice how Hydra soldiers stand in neat formations in Midtown just waiting for you to mow them down.

Armsbend Midgetsnowman Its pretty much now a giant loot explosion only matched by high level greater rifts in d3 for the sheer hilarious mob swarms you can blast your way through for loot.

Midgetsnowman Last I played it was during its shitphase.  I guess I need to boot her up again.  I just hate that there isnt a hardcore mode.

I remember Marvel heroes in beta. It was shit, its payment model was shit, its classs design was shit, the model for unlocking heroes for free was shit,. and the game played like hit.

Then the devs did something so few devs do. They listened to us angry people complaining on the forums. They made changes, they even for gods sake talked to us on the forums, explained their logic, and gave our arguments validity and weight.

And now theyre a hilariously profitable juggernaut and model of how to do f2p in a way that attracts people back over and over and over.

<3 gazillion.

Doom is pretty damn fun, and the mechanics of his three trees are interesting. I’m always surprised how different a lot of the characters play, with SO many of them. This game has really gotten so much better from launch, and just seems to keep getting better.

CrowingOne Every time i see someone complain that a game isn’t what they consider an mmo, all i can think of is a scene on Fraiser, where Roz says “Do we have to go through this EVERY time?!”  :P

Armsbend BalsBigBrother I just checked and I have 15 arpg’s currently installed on my computer, including the current  “big” ones but some smaller less well known ones too. All of them offer me something different and all are fun while sharing the same basic concepts.
Best is a matter of perspective so I just enjoy what each game offers me  and have fun with them all  :-)

Darthbawl BalsBigBrother Remember you can now play every hero up to level 10 so you can get a bit of a taste for each hero which might help but yeah there are a lot of great choices. :-)

DugFromTheEarth Wakkander DJjazzy BalsBigBrother Armsbend CrowingOne Sure, but Destiny has raids too, it isn’t like it is a MMO specific thing nowadays. And while yeah, you run into other players running about the world, it isn’t like the world is particularly large, and your not seeing all of them, just those in the same instance.
Regardless I am not saying there is a definitive scientific point point where it crosses a line from non-mmo to mmo that I am basing my opinion on. Rather like porn , I know it when I see it. And when I look at marvel heroes, MMO isn’t what comes to mind for me. But hey, a difference of opinion on this means absolutely nothing in the greater scheme of things, and if you enjoy it as an mmo and I enjoy it as a lobby arpg, does it really matter?

Darthbawl if you log into the game next week you will get a token that you can redeem at an npc that will be added.  Every hero up to but not including Doom will be available for you to pick from.  As I understand it the npc will be available for a couple of months at least so you don’t have to rush your choice.

marvel heroes has more than just lobbies for that “lots of players interacting”

there are plenty of public gameplay zones throughout storymode
Patrol areas like Midtown
And of course, Raids. yes… raids.. like you do in an MMORPG.

DugFromTheEarth DJjazzy BalsBigBrother Armsbend CrowingOne No horse in this race, but I would agree it isn’t an MMO in as much as a lobby based online ARPG. Why is that different from an MMO? I dunno, just how my brain works to classify things.
I think it is an OK arpg personally, it feels a little light compared to Diablo II, or Path of Exile, which have deeper customization and build options per character, but some of that comes with using heroes with clearly defined powers and the choice to go for a quantity of heroes. I want to like it more than I actually do, as I am a big marvel fan, and some of my favorites are in game. Cap, Strange, Doom. Give me Hercules with a decent moveset and I’ll play it no matter how much I like or dislike it, because Marvel’s Herc is awesome.
Though I wouldn’t consider myself a ‘serious arpg’ fan either.
Just think of the Herc costumes! Spider-Herc! Thor-Herc! Ape Herc! Ares!  Naked Herc! Chaos Warrior Herc! and last but certainly not least, Hulk Buster Herc (Thats just him normally, so….)
Okay, that got a little off topic.

BalsBigBrother One with builds, diversity and difficulty.  All in good fun but when the two main games are fighting each other (lol) about which is best someone invariably says, “well, it isnt Marvel heroes” and everyone generally agrees and gets a good laugh out of it.

CrowingOne It’s more MMO than Guild Wars 1, and Guild Wars 1 is an MMO by most folks definition.  It’s one of the best multiplayer ARPGs available (coming from an ARPG player).

DJjazzy Unfortunately the game uses the unreal engine, which is AWFUL for doing incrimental patches. Rather than simply being able to patch in the elements that have changed, they instead must be “repackaged” together with many elements of the game that didnt change, and then pushed live together. This means if you updated a 5k file that is part of a 2 gig package, the patch is going to be 2 gigs.

Some devs get around this by building modules outside of the core elements, allowing them to control things better, but this isnt a very common practice it seems. (Dungeon Defenders 1 had the same exact problem).

Funny how people always jump to claim things, but then do nothing to define what these things actually are.

CrowingOne: Please describe what your definition of an “MMO” is?
Armsbend: As asked already, what exactly is a serious arpg fan?

Also there’s an anniversary sale:
https://marvelheroes.com/news/news-articles/anniversary-sale-50
If you haven’t tried this game yet, now’s a great time to give it a shot. Bonus 15% ingame currency sale, 40-50% heroes/costumes/team-ups, and all the other anniversary stuff already said.
Nuff said

Been playing through this on the new Thing after his 52 review been a lot of fun so far.  Team-up 2.0 looks like it will be a good for people to work on.  I am starting out with Groot, he is kicking butt and healing me as well (make sure you grab the free team up boosts to help you get started).
There are lots of little QoL things too such as med kits now stack to 200 which is a great space saver and a few other  little things too. Going to take a while to work through all the changes

Oh and some relatively unknown hero was released too, I forget his name Boom or Loom or something.  I am sure some people will play him a little bit too don’t seem to be very many of them about hehehe :-).  <Dooms Day is a real thing>

I’m not sure what it is about their patching mechanism, but this seems like an awfully large download. I was excited to jump in today for the anniversary, and have instead spent several hours downloading (crappy internet), and still at least an hour away from playable. I sometimes think I spend more time patching this game than actually playing it.

Guess I shouldn’t complain about frequent patches though, especially on the game’s anniversary. Looking forward to celebrating, once I get in!
