Sword and Bored: Ranged Class

My favorite classes to play are melee. I don’t know why, but I like to be in the middle of the fray, stabbing the boss with my sword or lightsaber or other pointy object. However, I know as well as any other player the pitfalls of playing a melee class. That just doesn’t stop me from advocating the melee-friendly boss fight.

Our best friend, Mo, is now learning the problems of being a melee class and leveling up around other players who can out-distance him. However, I think Mo might actually be getting used to how this game works now. Let’s check out this week’s comic…

Crow God ImrarTheomen You’re right, the oiled men must have clouded my memory. I stand corrected. They indeed wore a bronze armour.

Apollymi Crow God Well, fair enough. The oiled up Spartans was probably the less problematic aspect of the movie, oppose to its bias stance on the Persian Invasion.

ImrarTheomen Crow God Except where Spartans renown for their heavy bronze armor such as much as with their shields and spears and martial arts?

:D I see Millar sweating over the paper drawing oiled men.

Although in reality it was not an aesthetic choice, metal was hard to come by those days. In some parts more than in others. Spartans covered the lack of armor with a huge shield and a good tactic.

Crow God  “Think about it, his idea of the Spartans are a bunch of buff, oiled up, Greek men running around in loin cloth.”

I see no problem with this.  lol

Ah, 300. The movie/comic that really makes me question Frank Millar’s sexuality.
Think about it, his idea of the Spartans are a bunch of buff, oiled up, Greek men running around in loin cloth. You know what’s a pretty terrible tactic for winning a battle? Running around with no armor. The only logic for such aesthetic choice I can surmise is that they were intended as eye candy for Millar’s fantasy. >->

I’m really starting to like Amilya. Maybe it’s cause I’m a role player myself. Hope we see more of her and Mcstabsalot. Ninja needs to get what’s coming to him.
Hmm, yknow, I sometimes here from players that they like roleplaying servers more than others because the people are often much nicer. That true in general? Competitive players just naturally more aggressive and critical towards others?

Well it can do both ways, especially if you’re playing a ranged class with a cast time. Many times I get to the end of a cast right before some melee guy comes and insta hit it…

Robert80 Vexia I think I probably do have it a lot better than people in the past did because shared tagging has become more of a thing, but you’re right that it’s frustrating when more games don’t adopt that one simple quality-of-life feature, or any number of others for that matter.

Vexia  Sorry that you have to deal with the “rear on head with feather sticking out” now.  I am still surprised how many MMOs fail to adapt to prevent this…

Oleg Chebeneev  … the sarcasm is strong with this one.  *I’m assuming, because anything else would result in my palm pushing my brain past Russia at supersonic speed.*

I play ranged because I am slow …. So there is a chance in a dungeon the I will actually be standing where I am supposed … Rather than running uselessly up to the mob that has already been killed.

Be glad you have never run a dungeon with me ……. Go Mo!!!!!!!

Who holds sword like that? Seriously, authors. You should watch “300”, “Gladiator” and other historically accurate movies to learn how swordfight works before you portrait them in “comic”. And that arrow angle on third screen. It cant stick like that from where archer is standing. And what the hell with centaur dying pose on third screen? Have you ever seen anyone die like that? Head raised high, arms straight down – Its frigging superman flying pose.
I spent 3 month to read Dostoyevski’s “War and Peace” and level my IQ from 143 to 144. After reading this S&B issue its back to 143 in just few seconds. THANKS

Bad memories…. I have ran into so many games where I get ninja’d by archers and instant-cast spells…. bad memories.

I’m sorry to say that for nearly a decade, I used my arrow-shooting powers in World of Warcraft for evil, not good. :P I used to utilize my pet tank and rapidfire tagging skills to great effect for me and no doubt frustration for others. But then I realized that was a thing that asshats do, and I don’t want to be one of those.
I’m fully reformed now, and the overwhelming majority of my characters are melee fighters (tanks, typically). I suffer the same kind of ninja tagging that I used to dish out at the hands of thoughtless casters and archers. I guess it’s MMO karmic backlash for me.

BalsBigBrother  I like the last line so much!  *Personally, my opinion on the kill stealing is that it becomes fair to quest item ninja back… or otherwise make it painful in return.*  Seriously, pets either need to be smart, controllable, and effective… or just skipped from the whole combat thing.

Yeah, I’ve seen kill stealing from melee players by ranged, ranged players by melee, and ranged by ranged.  My old favorite response was to just walk over and state ‘Yep.’  I would then just stand there.  5 minutes later: ‘Oh, did you want me to go off to do something?’ if they were still there… meanwhile I was already doing something else off the game.  Never had anyone stick around more than 6 minutes.

ManastuUtakata No the Centaur didn’t turn orange and brown (and lose his beard and grow long hair :P) – that’s a completely different Centaur, showing how the Archer is shooting various monsters that Mo is trying to attack.

Small curious question: I assume the centaur in question turning orange and brown signifies the target was tagged before the Mo had a chance to lay his sword into it? And therefor, cannot be looted by Mo, but by the 3rd party that ninja killed it? In WoW, the mob portrait becomes grey’d out to the person attempting to attack it when this has happen.
…On the side and IMO, I can’t think any mechanic more annoying, anti-social and asinine than this one, maybe except for FFA PvP where allowed. At least MMO’s like FF XIV have done their best efforts to minimize this effect.

Is Mo so low level that he doesn’t have Bull’s Charge,  Heroic Leap, or some other movement based melee attack?

Wait there is something badly wrong with this comic and I can’t quite put my finger on it  <ponders>
Bow class kill stealing a mob from a distance, nah that is just normal, deal with it Mo :p <ponders some more>
Bow class …. bow .. class <light bulb moment>  OMG!!!
I want to play the same mmo as Mo, the ranged bow class doesn’t seem to be saddled with a useless pet, ME WANT NOW!

melissamcdon Used to be the same for the Ranger class in FFXI.  The worst thing a ranger could ever say during a party was …  “um do you guys mind waiting while I go back to town for some arrows” after only ten minutes or so in said party.  Not that I ever did that  such a thing <shifty eyes>  nope no siree not me <cough>  :p

I’m a melee player too. Something about hitting something with a sword over …pushing a button and watching something happen way over there :P It feels more hands on where ranged feels so disconnected from the fight. When I crush in an orcs skull I want to feel the blood spray me in the face….I mean…umm  ” tries to think of something normal to say”,,,,,

omedon666 It’s kind of funny that any time a guy and girl do anything in any story we’re all like ” so….they should totally do it ”  And yet in real life we all seem to pretend like that isn’t what we’re thinking :)

Ah, ranged kill stealing.  I mostly play SWTOR these days, which has equal-opportunity kill-stealing with blasters, leaps, and zaps (or a companion who does the same).  I prefer the GW2 approach where it doesn’t matter who tags it as long as you participate, though.

omedon666 Well now that you mention it, there’s some joke potential on seeing what Mo has “glued on” beneath all that armor.  I am still shaking my head at EQ2’s “grunderwear.”

Never played melee really…  chose the Elf Archer in Gauntlet 1 and 2…  archer in Diablo… archer in Diablo 2…  archer or Druid (caster) in Everquest…  Archer or Minstrel (healer) in LOTRO…
I miss the realities of archery in EverQuest, where I had to learn to make arrows, or I would run out of them.   Each arrow I shot took one from my quiver…

“Roleplaying caster gal” continues to be the best supporting cast member! I almost hope she and Moe get a thing going, but I don’t want to prompt an ERP episode.

I love how expressive Mo’s helmet plume is.
This week reminds me of a couple of occassions when my LOTRO lowbies have been chasing down wolves or hendroval for a quest in Ered Luin, while a higher level hunter was using those same mobs for a slayer deed…

Darthbawl  As a ranged player who typically watches as they are about to cast and some ninja/thief shadow melee comes out of the shadows and stabs the mob just before I hit it, I relate as well.
