E3 2015: SWTOR’s next expansion is Knights of the Fallen Empire

EA has just announced its E3 lineup, and MMO fans are going to like the part where the company casually reveals the name and focus of the next Star Wars: The Old Republic expansion. Glowsticks at the ready!

Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ – The largest story-driven expansion to date, Knights of the Fallen Empire, marks a renewed focus on cinematic storytelling in Star Wars: The Old Republic. The expansion will deliver on the hallmarks of what makes a great BioWare™ game: new worlds to explore, new companions to recruit, and a dynamic story that players will be able to shape based on the choices they make.

We’ll have more from our writers on the ground in LA next week!

sray155  You didn’t play the latest WOW expansion have you? It was kind of halfassed done with bad decisions all around by the Devs.   End game really fell apart and they charged you more money for it too!!!

I don’t get why they keep added stuff on top of that broken game engine. Animations are still cringe-worthy and it was never the game Star Wars fans deserved.

I’d love nothing more than to play an awesome Star Wars mmo, but in a modern game engine with some actual motion capture.

They need to redo some of the graphics/engine.. I rig can play skyrim full graphics np, but swtor full graphics i get frame drops o.O come on, fix the game before releasing more content that’s probably going to be just as broken as revan fight on early access.. o.O Still, I am looking forward to it, it’s nice to have a bit more, and good to see this game isn’t dying anytime soon :) maybe it’ll be fixed in time, who knows

A new story is nice and all, but c’mon.. this is a MMO. There’s so much more that could be done here! New fun features, better game mechanics, and better sustainable end-game would be fantastic.

keysmachine Perhaps because it’s actually a hybrid, not a F2P. There are a lot of subscribers.

SallyBowls1 Neo_Wolf What makes the Consular story so utterly silly is that the ship the Jedi get doesn’t even have bunk space for your companions, much less the collection of misfits and oddballs that you get saddled with on top of them. It really gives a good impression of the Republic when the representatives of the unaligned worlds have to sleep in shifts on the couches…

While I’ve always enjoyed the story content in The Old Republic so far, if this announcement with it’s emphasis on narrative means what it has so far, then I’m not really excited.  The games biggest problem in my opinion is that Bioware have been very bad at developing a sustainable endgame that can hold interest between content drops.  We’ll have to see what they plan to bring to the table, but going by 3.1 and 3.2 so far, I’m expecting further disappointment.

So does that mean Bioware’s actually getting a bigger expansion budget for once?

hoping each class gets a story line, rather then a single one that drags everyone in regardless of relevance, and that the story can be played properly as a group, rather then every story phase being ‘personal’ only.

Better game mechanics would be better. Story is nice and everything but it does not keep me playing more after one play through. And the shop needs a revamp… Can’t really point at it but something is fishy about it.

keysmachine I would compare the content released for SWTOR and WoW similar in scope since the SWTOR launch.  They certainly don’t have 14 month gaps.  So, I understand your point, but output per dollar is definitely in favor of SWTOR.

I’m really excited. Their development lately hasn’t really let me down.
And I fully expect the comments section to be a hive of scum and villainy for this.

Would like to see more interactions with your current companions / romance interest as well.  Was pretty disappointed with their last expansion, but if they intend to focus on dynamic stories and companion interactions, then I might be interested in this one.

Aren’t we missing a game from our SW orgy next week?  We get SWTOR (yeah!) and SW Battlefront.

But what about the Visceral Star Wars? Amy Hennig? IDK but people have been teasing.

The EA press conference will stream live at http://cts.businesswire.com/ct/CT?id=smartlink&url=http%3A%2F%2FLiveToPlay.ea.com&esheet=51122738&newsitemid=20150612005524&lan=en-US&anchor=LiveToPlay.ea.com&index=2&md5=e48ff5c79e5b9d627733eec0e738f389.

WWDC this week, Steam sale and E3 next week.  It is literally Christmas, because that is when most of this stuff will ship :-)

keysmachine Yeah WoW is bigger and will have more content.

On the other hand, expansions are increasingly rare. E.g. EVE and EQ? both stopped doing expansions.  CCP says the total content per year will be higher now than with expansions.  But the content drops are going to be smaller. So how much of WoW’s expansions being bigger is due to more content and how much is due to the old fashioned way of waiting too long to release a big expansion?

Last cycle, WoW had a period of time with *zero* content for 14 months. SWTOR had two releases, one more mini than the other. But for most of 2013-14, SWTOR was generating more content per month than WoW. I would rather have more content per year. I don’t overly care whether it is once every 80 weeks or once every 2. I think I prefer 5 weeks.

And of course F2P means nothing – LoL and WoT are f2p and doing quite well, There are single phone games that do double GW2’s revenue in a year. Blizzard execs essentially said not being f2p is hurting them.

keysmachine Because Bioware released a picture that can pretty much only be a still from a new blur cinematic. You don’t spend the money it takes to hire blur for a Rise of the Hutt Cartel or Shadow of Reven sized expansion.

keysmachine Swtor isn’t a true F2P. It is a hybrid. End game is still filled with subscribers who need the freedom the sub offers. Also Bioware evidently is starting to understand the money earned from an mmo should be put back into the mmo. Unlike Blizzard who only throws money at the latest flavor of the year genres.

World of Warcraft’s expansions cost a full $60, which is the same price a full game; so to justify that cost they have to put pretty much a full game worth of content into it.
Conversely, when a F2P game launches an expansion they generally charge 10 to 20 bucks, which is about the same as a DLC pack for a single player game and will contain about the same amount of content as one.
So what is your issue with the amount of new content that a F2P game puts into an expansion? You’re literally getting what you pay for.

keysmachine

I’m still a little mystified why people think a FREE TO PLAY game its going to have some world changing expansion that adds 200 unique hours of content.

Please name me a SINGLE F2P game that launches content on a scale and scope that say WOW does when an expansion releases.

I really hope this is a real expansion. Rise of the Hutt Cartel was a sad joke and Shadows of Revan was even worse.

At some point, EA has to put some of the cartel shop money back into the game, right?

Based on the title alone I sense (maybe its the force ..)  two new Advanced Jedi Classes …

The Fallen Jedi

The Redeemed Sith

Both start their quests at Lvl 40  (or ACT III)

Both Classes are allowed access to both Light and Dark Jedi Attacks

I can dream can’t I :)

The expansion title implies it’s the last days of the war against the Empire, maybe? There’s still the Emperor to deal with. He’s the Bigger Bad here. Wonder if future expansions would deal with the postwar era cleanup.
I sure hope this means some substantial addition to the Class Storylines. After that one-shot in the last expansion, it’s not enough.

Madda If a person started from scratch in SWTOR currently, they would have plenty to do and much story to explore.  Can a free game be worth more than a sub game?  The answer is yes.

That’s the part of the trooper story that bugs me the most. I’ve played through every other story at least twice, but the lack of squad based action (and mediocre story) means I’ve only bothered with that one once. Even with the epic xp boost right now I feel no desire to run that class story again, largely because you don’t feel like the leader of Havoc squad when they’re never with you.

I wasn’t expecting all that much of the announcement, so I’m happy enough with this. New companions sounds cool, and hopefully being part of the announcement means that they’re part of the expansion, not market place item that will come out at roughly the same time.

It’s going to have to struggle to do badly given the hype that’s going to be rife regarding SW by the year’s end. Everyone, everything and it’s dog is going to be SW branded.

DPandaren confectionally I have been playing with one friend and it’s pretty fun as a duo! The only drag is we’re doing the 12x exp event and since we’ve been skipping a lot of the sidequests and dungeon-type stuff (just no time in our schedules if we don’t want to take months to finish the story) we haven’t been able to do many conversations together.  I wish there was more opportunity for group participation in the main class quests.

confectionally The bestest part is when you’re playing with a friend. Being able to hop on call to talk to NPCs for turn ins altogether, is really nice.

AvatarOP It’s a guilty pleasure for me.  It still feels like an MMO for people who don’t like MMOs, designed by people who don’t understand MMOs, and I could write an essay on its failings and missed opportunities..
But I still enjoy it for what it is rather than what it might have been, and I’m happy to see that they appear to be playing to their strengths – story, story and story..

I’m going to be cynical today. That really sounds like a lot of nothing.

New companion is the only part that’s pretty interesting, but not like we haven’t got new companions before. Guessing it will be more like a new HK, in that it will have some quests revolved around it, some companion conversations, but then be generally background during other story events.

I sure hope we see more story where we get our entire cast of companions along with us for the adventure.  Nothing feels more awkward than playing the leader of Havoc Squad and….then leaving most of your squad on the ship.

Madda i only WoWed on a fake/free server until not even max level and that was during Burning Crusade years… I thought it would be good because i was a UO fan. but it turned out i didn’t like it much…
then i didn’t play mmos until 3 years ago when i “tried” gw2 because it was b2p.
and now i’m solid into mmos.

all that to say; i wouldn’t know about Warlords :)

I guess this is a good sign the game is getting the income it needs to generate the type of content it was designed to get. I didn’t feel the last 2 expansions had stories I really cared about like the original content did. I hope this new one does really go back to that.

I’m beginning to think they decide the expansion and patch titles with a random name generator.

Still, new story content, not going to turn my nose up at that.
