Massively OP Podcast: Episode 22

It’s the circle of MMOs: Even as one game dies, another is born. And so it went this past week, with RaiderZ heading out even as Trove and Skyforge waves hello. In addition to all of this, the podcast team attempts to unravel all of the vitriol and infodumps concerning Star Citizen. That should fill up the hour, right?

It’s the Massively OP Podcast, an action-packed hour of news, tales, opinions, and gamer emails! And remember, if you’d like to send in your own letter to the show, use the “Tips” button in the top-right corner of the site to do so.

Good show. Blizzard has to come up with a new mega game or slowly vanish into obscurity.  No one want to do the same thing over and over forever {ok there are a few who don’t mind) so get off them yachts and start on your kids 401k plan with a new and improved wow killer.

Maneuvering a company the size of ATVI can be like driving a Semi through a slalom course.
Having said that this short sighted approach of quick profit on HotS, Hearthstone & Overwatch is going to have long term ramifications for WoW.  There were a lot of high profile people that left before & during Draenor’s release. Insiders see the writing on the wall before the public.

Re: Issue 12 of TSW, I agree with Justin, not much for my two friends and I at all – we play this game for the stories/missions. Dungeons aren’t our thing for TSW at all.

Re: WoW – so yes. I’d play WoW if they fixed their content release pace (and gave proper totems back to Shamans!) but I have ZERO loyalty to Blizzard as a dev – I will not be trying any of their other games since none of them are MMORPGs! So if they do bleed WoW dry to help the other games then Blizzard has lost my money for good.

raincoat No More Tears They also don’t usually talk about their age much outside of their friends and guildies because the internet is incredibly hostile and rude to “olds” (younger folks’ term, not mine). Guessing older folks are less about splashing out all over social media, oversharing, etc. They’re there, they’re just not in your face.

Wow makes them a lot of money, but dollar for dollar they make a lot more with the little games like Hearthstone and HotS. Thing is, when Squenix said they HAD to rework FF14 because it would besmirch their brand if they didn´t, Blizz did not pay attention. If WoW goes down and becomes well known as being left in life support by Blizz what does that do to all the other games that depend on WoW lore? Will people still care about hearthstone if WoW is left to collect dust? What about HotS?

McGuffn Actually its in the TOS that they can cancel your pledge if your making an asshat of yourself and causing the company problems..this isn’t the first time they have done this with a disruptive pledger..Manzas being specifically called out by RSI as an example.

zoward paragonlostinspace Too true. For example I’m about to go for an all day ride since the thunderstorms here have moved out. :) So I won’t be doing any gaming today or doing much reading. Of course there is always tonight for some gaming.

paragonlostinspace  There are far more of us than it may appear.  We’re busy with life outside of gaming, or actually playing games, rather than weighing in on gaming blog posts (present company excepted, of course!)

TomTurtle This.  It makes me want to eat a stack right now, and wash it down with a nice refreshing can of Fresca.

No More Tears They exist. Not on a massive scale, but they’re around. They just play with all the other people because they’re, well, still just people?

RSI has stepped in it now. It could have just been a Derek Smart Grandstands Again story, now they cancelled his kickstarter and didn’t notify him beforehand per company policy. Terrible move from a now terrible company.

Thank you Bree and Justin for playing my video rant, yes you did hack it up a bit, but that’s OK.  Because I understand time constraints and I am very long winded, so no worries, its all good.  On my Twitch and Youtube channels there’s plenty more Sadly. Its really sad that I had to go this direction, but when you put your time and money into something, you don’t want to see it go away.
“Time and Money are NOT! trivial things”. We base our lives around time and money. And when you become an SOB like me, approaching 50, (Wheres my AARP card Dammit !) lol.
We use our time to generate money for us to live better lives. Most people will understand that, once they start working to survive and to have a fruitful life.
For me as of this post my sub (WOW token err. plex) will go out in 46 hours. Will I go back to WOW ?. “Yes, I’ll be playing it for  free”, but only once they turn the switch on for Flying, then I’ll go back. I still have my Alliance side main to roll up and because I’ve already got pathfinder achievement done already. In 2 weeks after 6.2 dropped BTW. I’ll be back in game and then I’ll have some real “fun again playing” but on the Alliance side this time around.  Making you go around on the ground is OK, (but only once) is acceptable.  After that, because of the design of the game flying is required.  (My opinion of course).
So what have I learn from this exercise.  I should’ve followed my own advice that has been clearly documented in the past,(that I didn’t do BTW and got caught up in the hype) that is to wait towards the end of an expansion (use the flying gauge) before committing on playing the game.
Me and my family did that with MOP (Mist of Pandaria) and it worked out really well when we came back during the release of Timeless Isle timeline.  We all had a great experience.  Here I go rambling on again, I better stop now.  Thanks again, and please let me know when it is appropriate to release my comments in its full context on my youtube channel that it originates from.

Listening to you old people talk about games made me think: Why don’t we get actual elderly hooked on MMORPGs? I suppose it must happen somewhere in this world of seven billion inbreds, but I don’t seem to hear about it as often as I’d like. I mean, they could keep up to par on things like typing and computer skills, as well as putting those tired brain cells to use by chatting to people and working out game mechanics, even if it’s as something as simple as playing dress-up or sitting in town crafting… which I’m sure plenty of you less old people do anyways. If we’re going to be a terrible society and hide them away in hospital-like buildings while their minds rot, we could at least keep them sane, no? Who knows — maybe they could be an untapped hardcore segment, being that they have a lot of free time. Old people raids, old people guilds, old people RP, old people Twitch streamers…
Anyways, I had kind of written off Trove despite its supposed easy-going fun, but that intro/outro music is surprisingly audilicious. It’s like… Tron meets Deus Ex meets retro chiptunes — and not the crappy Steam Greenlight pixel/retro phoned-in cash-in kind. It might just be enough to get me to try it again. I… I don’t have time for this.

raincoat There was an investment/analyst firm that was making that guess too. It makes a lot of sense in terms of crossover promotion and building off the hype of each other, but at the same time, that puts another yearlong content gap between the final patch and the next expansion…for an expansion that received only one content patch after 14 months of development and 8 months of launch…with a team apparently double the size as it was before…yeah : /

Arthwyndar Well, apparently the film’s releasing on June 3, 2016 (?). I can’t help but feel that they MUST be planning for something around that time…

Honestly, I think people vastly overestimate Activisions influence over Blizzard. I think Blizzard is very much on board with all of these business direction changes, and wouldn’t be surprised if they’re driving many of them. I think they’ve come to the realization that putting all their eggs in WoW’s basket isn’t going to continue to be viable so are working on other cheaper products that have long monetization tails.

Here is my guess: They’re going to announce the expansion at Blizzcon and they’ll release that expansion this fall.

Just finished listening to the podcast, great podcast as usual. The end comments about WoW were some good ones and I tend to agree with the responders (voice and read) as well. Something is up over at Blizzard and hopefully we will learn about it sooner rather than later.
