World of Warcraft to reveal newest expansion next week

What will World of Warcraft’s next expansion be? Forget speculation — you’ll be finding out for real in a little over a week.

Blizzard announced today that it will reveal the follow-up to Warlords of Draenor on Thursday, August 6th, at noon EDT during a Gamescom livestream. The studio said that it will have a follow-up dev chat covering the expansion on August 9th during the convention as well.

“Join us Thursday, August 6th, at 9 a.m. PDT for a special World of Warcraft event streamed live from Gamescom 2015 in Cologne, Germany — where we’ll be unveiling the next chapter of the World of Warcraft saga,” the studio teased on the offical game site.

Fans were hoping to hear about the expansion soon, considering that the last expansion has already wrapped up its patch cycle. So since we have a week until the news, how about whipping up a Massively OP office pool to guess the new expansion’s name?

wjowski AttackkonOtaku StillCantBanMe Until the Q2 2015 numbers are released they lost their gains and are right back to where they were pre-WoD.

Which is sad that 3 months after an expansion you lose all the people you gained.  Shows you’re not doing something right.  Blizzard has been stubborn though when it comes to WoW development.

Still that’s not exactly a ‘huge hit’.  And actually fairly dire when you consider that MoP’s 6.8 million number was the gradual result of a year-long content drought whereas WoD’s 3 million sub loss came after WoD was only 4-5 months old.

TimothyEnder  I liked Vashj’ir, it was the only fun zone in Cataclysm because it was different from what we were used to.  Too bad for some stupid reason they wouldn’t let you use that underwater mount anywhere else under water.  The sea horse was picky about sea salt content I guess?

If only 1/4 of the elitist little tittie babies writing here that they are quitting, is actually true, it portends good news for trade chat, I can tell ya that. So, I’m already optimistic. Can I pre-order now?

Dope_Danny ManastuUtakata Bitter much? Or just full of yourself?  A little of both?
They can’t wait until Blizzcon because that would be too late to get this out by early next year.

Madruga Squive Yeah. Stupid corporation and their 8 years of success and 7 million paying subs…it’s like they think they’re Soooo special or something, we hate them!

Squive I strongly feel it has overstayed its welcome as well. At this point, I just wish they closed the Warcraft MMO and simply did another thing with the franchise. Maybe Warcraft 4.

Stone Crow Exactly!  Like you, I love it the way it is so I can’t understand why they would change it up too much, good point.

I don’t care much what it is, I’ll play it if its WoW, I love the game.
Unless they do something really stupid like make it all or mostly underwater like terrible , terrible vash’ir zone. I cna’t believe they would do something that stupid tho.

World of Warcraft: The Second Coming of Thrall and his Orc Friends. What I’m trying to say is it’ll probably deal with orcs with a super hero orc. Most of all other races would take have a part at all except for humans as the secondary main race. Gnomes and goblins will play small comic parts.
I will play three weeks and once more hate myself for giving them money.
I will hope for anything that suggest that they’re actually thinking but won’t believe it until the expansion actually comes out

Sorenthaz wjowski AttackkonOtaku StillCantBanMe The WoD pre patch brought them up to 7.4 million, so they were technically mop players, WoD itself went from 7.4 to 10 million, then down to 7.1

So with recent “hints” by the same cryptic Chinese source that properly called WoD/MoP stuff, it sounds like it could be a return to Northrend OR probably more likely is a visit to the Lost Isles where the Tomb of Sargeras is (which likely has Sargeras’s avatar remains in-tact despite the damage done to the Tomb in WC3 TFT) to stop Gul’dan from getting his hands on the remains of Sargeras’s avatar that had stepped into Azeroth in the past.  Which likely means that we’re going to be tackling Azshara and her naga as well along the way.

wjowski AttackkonOtaku StillCantBanMe  Not really.  WoW was at 6.8 million before WoD, hit 10 million, then dropped to 7.1 million as of the 1st Quarter of this year.
So 300K players stayed around for at least the first few months after WoD.  We’ll see in the next quarterly report (which is coming up soon I imagine) if that number went lower.

ManastuUtakata the worst case scenario is they shat the bed with WoD and are in a mad rush to get another expansion out for another burst of box sale income that will only result in the same team that made WoD now making a rushed expansion to boot.
Anyone with experience in EA taking a series and trying to make it a yearly franchise knows this NEVER ends with a return to form, only a whirlpool decline into mediocrity.

Of course they could have had half their 100+ man team working on this while the other worked on warlords, but its been so long since i saw a blizzard product from the wow team that i would call well made i honestly doubt it.

Given this is being shown at gamescom and not blizzcon where they are guaranteed to have a brand loyalty audience of adoring fans that reeks of desperation. I think its going to be interesting to see what happens, especially the audience reaction when they come on stage. This isnt their usual “woo you are a rock star ill buy anything you sell me!” blizzcon audience.

It’ll be more of the same and people will lap it up. Why change it up when it’s making you millions regurgitating the same old stuff. When it stops selling they’ll try harder but until then they won’t. Not really a surprise to anyone.

BigAngryPlays Troll patches were an actual thing all the way up until WoD. NEs saw far less screentime for sure.. I mean after all, they’re not orcs.

I got it from an inside source, the expansions titled “The Turds of Azeroth”!!!
Seriously though,  Its weird how I played WoW for years and always had fun but now my reaction to it is “meh” and I’d rather play half a dozen other MMO’s than it

Except most of the new quests were shit, replacing writing and storytelling with pop-culture references that were outdated before the expansion was even released.  I’m willing to admit Warcraft was no Illiad but fucking hell Cata felt like the entire writing crew fell into a mid-life crisis from which they never recovered.

Or the skittish paranoia of having players play them in ways they didn’t intend. Particularly when said devs get own’d by such 3v3. /sigh

I want to care, but I just can’t. I got back into WoD because I
actually really like the Warcraft universe, but man, I think this game
is getting dangerously close to outstaying it’s welcome. If it hasn’t
already.
I’ll keep hoping that it’s gonna be a sequel /
revamp / whatever you wanna call it instead of an expansion even though
I know I’ll be wrong.

Zaeja Tamanous Yeah, it started with the all-out assault on class diversity in Cata and has only continued since unfortunately. Shaman used to be an epic class. With totems as they are, eh, I pretty much feel like a water druid + earth shield – form flexibility. FWIW, the other dude in my guild who mains a shaman loves the changes. I just strongly preferred totem-stomping to cooldowns. In my mind, it’s a change that continues to be emblematic of Blizzard’s cluelessness when it comes to class balance and why players play what they play since Wrath.
