Massively OP Podcast Episode 24: WoW speculation

What will the new World of Warcraft expansion be? We won’t find out until later this week, but podcasters Bree and Justin have no shortage of speculation as to what it may be — and how it might help the free-falling fantasy MMO.

It’s the Massively OP Podcast, an action-packed hour of news, tales, opinions, and gamer emails! And remember, if you’d like to send in your own letter to the show, use the “Tips” button in the top-right corner of the site to do so.

Greaterdivinity paragonlostinspace That’d be my take too! The funny stuff I do find dorkily amusing (I am a big dork!). The serious lore is cringeworthy. This is true of the vast majority of MMOs, to be fair. But I don’t wanna be fair; I expect better from Blizz.

Great to hear an update of MOP. Hats off to Bree and Co. for getting the new site up so fast, and not only picking up where they left off, but making it way better in short order. Without MassivelyOP I wouldn’t be in the know at all. No other site comes close. Thank you for all the entertainment you provide me. As soon as I can support you, I will. Unemployed right now, I know all of you can sympathize with that. (Positive side is I’m getting a ton done at home, carpet, flooring, put up a shed lol)

Grizzly Hills music is always welcome :D
And I’m very happy to know that the site is doing well. Keep up the great work!

Btw, I gotta strongly agree  with BBB’s comments to you all Bree. :) Very glad that the site’s going well. I think it’s safe to say that for many of us it has become our online reading community in regards to our mutual shared hobby of mmo’s and mmo-rpgs in particular.

paragonlostinspace Honestly, while there are a ton of jokes and tongue in cheek humor, from what friends have been telling me over the years it seems like they actually try to write serious lore…it’s just all bloody awful and hilariously bad.
“Wait, Falsted Wildhammer is dead?” : P

Greaterdivinity I pretty much look at WoW lore as meant to be a joke at least it’s always come off rather tongue and cheek. Too bad because I am a lore centric person and Blizzard never took it serious. Did they?

TomTurtle I forgot to mention the Grizzly hills song in my other comment. I love that song too, and would purposely go through Grizzly hills just to hear it. Something soothing about it. Nice choice to open up with!

Thanks for answering my questions guys! Your responses gave me some perspective, especially the idea that I may be taking people too literally and a lot of it is hyperbole in the hopes devs will put more stock into the feedback.

Wading into a Smart fueled SC comment section is really intense tho, I can’t imagine being that emotionally invested in a product that doesn’t really exist yet, on either side of the “debate”.

Bree, I appreciate your dislike of Warcraft/WoW lore. What little I’ve seen/continue to see still causes me pain with how awful it is.
Also, glad to hear the site is doing well now : )

breetoplay That’s the problem. There’s still stuff we do not know about. So much is up in the air at this point. We still haven’t heard what the challenging content is supposed to be, though it’s speculated to be raids. At this point, if you were getting bored of Guild Wars 2, this will be mostly more of the same with some slight tweaks. Not bad if you like the formula, but not the best selling point for any new or former players.
Also, we have no idea how many zones there are and how big they are going to be nor how much content will be in them. The profession elite specializations are neat and all, but it’s not really the meat and potatoes content-wise. You can really tell they’re still in mid-development of many of these features and they’re rolling out the information as they can.
I don’t want to see future expansions create this kind of content drought, and I’m hoping this hiccup is due to this being the first expansion. I don’t want them to fall into that trap Blizzard has previously.

TomTurtle Yeah, it’s just so dicey because they’re like Blizzard: They’re putting all their eggs into one expansion basket. If that basket tips over, doesn’t perform well, they’re not going to have much to show for their effort and expense, and people will be far more angry.
It doesn’t help that a lot of the expansion STUFF isn’t up my alley really at all. I do like the class upgrades and the idea of new territory, but eh, the rest, I hope it doesn’t boil down to mastery grind and jumping puzzles the way it looks to be.

Project Gorgon is not a sandbox.  The word means different things to different people, so just my two cents.

I love that WoW song. I always kept an ear out for it playing whenever I would pass through Grizzly Hills. Also, funnily enough, I had already viewed and liked that particular video a while back it seems.

Oh Bree, you’re not the only one who wants content in GW2 while waiting for the expansion. I’ve seen others on Reddit as well. And if I recall correclty, the SAB thing was about having to retrofit it as some of the coding has changed that would not work in today’s engine.
They really are focusing on the expansion and the expansion alone. I hope it pays off. Since pre-purchase was announced, my hopes have been lifted a bit with the details that have come out. I’m pretty certain I’ll get the expansion at this point.

Thanks for the wonderful podcast. It was neat to hear the behind-the-scenes info on how the site is doing.

I’m so glad to hear the website is doing ok. It’s also awesome that you are willing to talk about it all – that’s a pretty cool attitude. Good podcast too again guys!

Great podcast again guys.
I especially found the question from Bals Big Brother interesting.
I’m sure I’ve no idea of the work load it takes to provide us with this site, (and by the way my predictive text suggested “herculean” after workload.. QFT!), but I can say I bloody well appreciate it.
Cheers guys, here’s to the next six months. :)

wow, i really loved the look into Bree and Justins world especially in regards to how the site is doing. I never really thought about how much a price that was being paid to keep your integrity. Yes i don’t like the big boob ads either but if they pay the bills, well that’s a different story. But to hear you guys havent had to sell your souls yet, is very heartening.

breetoplay Enikuo We have a very similar and common erroneous use in Norwegian, but instead of ‘less’ it will translate to ‘smaller’. “There were smaller people at work this week due to vacation.”

Great podcast!  Backing MOP’s Kickstarter continues to be some of the best money ever spent, and there’s a reason I outwardly talk as “one of the tribe,” linking your articles and plugging you guys for the awesomeness you are: you guys deserve this success because your vision is pure and honest.  Thanks for being amazing!

Also, cheap plug for those sick of seeing the vitriol in the Star Citizen articles, remember that irrational people are not entitled to space on your screen!

Remember, it’s no more odd or out there to ignore people on this forum than it is to ignore people in an MMO!  Ignore lists: sanity you can count on!
