Otherland opens its early access doors today

Does Otherland hold potential to be an immersive MMO? Fans today will get to find out as the title opens up its early access testing on Steam.

The sci-fi MMO is adopting a buy-to-play model, and as such players will have to fork over some cash (at least $20) to get into early access testing. According to the developers, the game is mostly feature complete, with early access taking the place of open beta instead of being a repackaged alpha test. The team is asking for help during early access to track down bugs and to judge whether the combat balancing is too easy.

To find out more about Otherland, read our recent first impressions of the title and then watch the early access trailer after the break.

Source: Steam
Update: Note that the game appears to be region-locked to the US and Europe. With thanks to our commenters for clarifying this.

scathson Actually PvP is entirely consensual outside of one zone (Hackers Zone). You can flag yourself for PvP anywhere though.

Got it and pretty impressed so far. Animations and world are both top notch.  Combat needs a bit of work.  Pretty great for ranged right now, but melee can get stuck easily and you cant just autoattack in front of you even with AE weapons unless you have locked onto a target.
As an Aussie I had to jump on the Asian server (100 ping!), because the ping of >300 on the US made it unplayable, which is a bit odd because I can play with 300 ping in other games without too much drama.

This game isn’t getting very good first impressions on Steam…I will wait for a sale (more than the current 15% off) or closer to final release and check it again.

The graphics caught my attention. I think I’ll have a look at the game and see what features it has.

That wasn’t the point of my comparison. Rather a sci-fi story about fantasy world in a virtual environment…some seemed to be confused with this notion.

ManastuUtakata anatheod Or don’t see it, and spend time watching something far better written with far less Mary Sue/Gary Stu moments :)

Nordavind Farscape was a fun show, a mix of serious sci-fi and over the top craziness and Scorpius was a great villain. Great actors too. :P

Played the beta. It’s definitely unfinished. It’s been in development hell for a while

ManastuUtakata Serrenity Feodor My expectations were already at 0 for years. Now that’s within reach I’m actually excited for it. Already looks better then I thought it would. So there ;)

I suspect this is going to get shredded on Steam much like Wander was destroyed by general audiences. Also, what the shit is going on in that trailer?! In deep man voice “Worlds. Friends. …Mars. Bug World.”

Nordavind Try reading the book. It’s not trying to be different, it’s basically a 90’s take on what virtual worlds would be like. And you are playing a player playing in a virtual world. So meta.

Serrenity anatheod I loved the giant house world in the book, I thought that was a very cool idea.

ManastuUtakata Serrenity Feodor Well, they’re *suggesting* we lower our expectations.  We don’t *have* to!  :)

Nordavind Its source material is the “Otherland” series of novels by Tad Williams, and it all happens in VR.  Various people have crafted the various realms to follow fantasy, SF, or surreal settings.  In other words, there’s a reason behind the eclectic variety of settings, it’s not just craziness for crazy’s sake.

Regarding PvP:

I have heard
1- There is an optional PvP flag that you can turn on ANYWHERE (takes 30 seconds to activate).
2- This flag provides a small boost to XP
3- Killing players provides small bonuses to killer, no penalties to victim

Can someone please confirm these?
Thanks,
Daelyx

checked it out on steam and it looked interesting – until I read the description
although the tags don’t mention PVP it is certainly there – even your virtual home isn’t safe – that killed it

Too otherworldy for my taste, the Wonderland crazyness does not appeal to me. Also, sci-fi? I saw a Scorpius lookalike in there. Reminded me that I haven’t finished watching Farscape. Which, coincidentally, is because it tired too hard to be different and “otherwordly” and I simply lost interest of what happens next.

Best of luck, though.

It’s amazing we have to lower our expectations based on someone else’s opinion of it. /bleah

…good luck with that.

Serrenity Feodor Yep, during the first closed beta in 2012 (via Gamigo), shortly before the original publisher/developer went bankrupt, and again in 2014/2015 (via Drago).

anatheod It’s very meta.  A virtual world about many virtual worlds.  In the books there was like the house World (the entire world was inside a giant house), Ancient Egypt, Australian desert, a glass-like world — the concept is that I can be all of these different types of worlds that you, as a player, can move seemlessly between.

Feodor so you played it then?

Otherland is a half finished MMO from 2012. So lower your expectations.

thickenergy  Yeah I saw that.  They are asking steam to unblock.  Game actually looks pretty cool.  Worth 20 bucks to check out anyway.

anatheod The Otherland series is about a set of virtual worlds, which is what we’re looking at.

At least, according to some dev posts in the Steam forums, they seem to be removing the region locks soon.

solipsis Steam is telling me that the game will unlock in about 4 hours from now. Maybe that has something to do with the region-lock message?
