Sword and Bored: TEF

This one took me a while to draw. I think it has a lot to do with the junk pile that’s in the background. I have also been attempting to add more depth to the characters themselves. At first, I thought that maybe the joke was the most important, so I would spend less time on the characters, giving them just enough life to get the point across. And the joke is important — maybe the most important — but the other elements of the comic are important as well.

Much to the chagrin of my drawing hand, I have been spending a lot more time on the drawing part of the comic. And I think it’s shown in the last couple. I know I’m asking for it, but let me know what you think in the comments.

And here is Mo’s adventure this week…

StClair In single player TES games you can just reload your save to correct the miss click/ miss key press. When I intend to go on a stealing spree in TESO, I do accept full consequences if I get spotted. But when I want to check guild trader wares, I don’t appreciate being chased off by interacting with wrong set of pixels that were too close or overlapping.

That was actually pretty good.

Oh I hate when I do that lol. Sadly its not that hard for me to hit an npc while trying to do something completley unrelated xD
Larry, the arts improving and it looks great. Keep up the good work!

BeerGnome This was the first thing that came to mind. Bonus when you would see a new player pull off the same accident right next to you and it’s just like, “yup”. XD

Oleg Chebeneev It seems to be you who is new to the wonderful world of MMO’s with your limited knowledge on the subject. Try EQ…

Heh, I’ve done that in more games I care to name. Accidentally attacked the wrong NPC whilst trying to do something completely different and got myself flagged when I wasn’t prepared for it :p

I know, authors of “comic” are beginners in the wonderful world of MMOs. But you get pvp flag for attacking other player, not NPC.

In the very first mmo I ever played – Dransik (now known as Ashen Empires) – this was always an entertaining treat. Even better when it happened to myself. “Omg how far those freaking guards are going to chase me?!?”

That sorta what happens in the Dresden Files. They’re also pretty ornery in TERA too. o.O

Ahah, I like how that ‘RIP’ becomes very apparent in the third panel when Mo is flagged. Nice touch :)

Narayan Given how everyone in the regular, offline Bethesda games goes absolutely insane if you accidentally pick up anything in a shop, I’d say that’s perfectly in keeping with the tone of the series. :p

Well, after I killed my first NPC in ESO by accident and got chased off by guards, I immediately turned on protection against attacking the innocent in options. I really wish there was such a prevention against accidental stealing (or at least a prompt or something), because I can’t count how many times now I’ve swiped something off right next to the merchant, instead of interacting with him, who in turn starts yelling for guards. Argh, no more peaceful trading :/ So basically what the comic strip shows but with stealing in the end & I still end up “flagged”. :(

Haha!  I remember the early days of EQ.  Especially trainers.  You had to hit <enter> and then type what you wanted to “say” to them… sometimes I would forget to hit <enter> and at some point I would hit <a> and start attacking them (<a> was the default autoattack key).  I definitely lost quite a bit of xp due to my stupidity.

Except for the range bug with Feral Druid’s cat form that lasted well over 6 months+ between Vanilla and TBC.  GAH!  I still have horrible memories of being inside an enemy and scratching their butt just to hit their face.

The art looks good, Larry. We appreciate the extra effort.

I loved the SWG TEF system. Made for many meorable spy and random outbreak of combat moments in Cantinas.

Gotta love those accidental pvp flags. :)  Honestly Larry as to the art, I’m fine if you do or if you don’t spend a lot of time on detailing background.  Either way I enjoy the strip.

camelotcrusade
This was all too common in original EverQuest.  There was no “safety cut-out” on your attacks when talking to vendors or other friendly NPCs.  Suddenly that cute elf chick merchant would turn into Chuck Norris and use you for a training dummy.

Haha! Nice! Back in my original Everquest days that was far too common. The NPC would beat you to death.

I always get a kick out of Mo’s helm of many emoticons.

I really like the look! I feel like every strip is a step up from the previous one in terms of pacing, art, etc.

camelotcrusade I’ve accidentally clicked on vendors in single player games and swung at them instead of interacting with them. I don’t think I’ve ever done it in an MMO, though.

Step 1: Be a WoW Druid
Step 2: Stand on resource nodes while invisible and wait for enemy faction player to try to harvest
Step 3: Break invis just before he goes to click, proceed to murder now pvp flagged enemy faction player
Step 4: Re-invis and let the corpse camp begin

I appreciate the extra detail. And for the PvP adverse, yes, there is always that worry you might accidentally flag yourself, lol.

Like the updated level of detail Larry!  While I agree that the joke is the most important, when I see an underdrawn comic I always wonder a bit “do you not know how to draw” (in which case, why are you making comics), or “was it not worth your time to do a good job”.
Either way I think sloppy comics are a distraction, not that yours have been, and more detail keeps people focused on the joke rather than poor art

camelotcrusade  He tried to hand over that weapon without looking, and stabbed the vendor.  Not a normal feature of games, but most gaming comments take a little creative license.

I’m afraid I don’t get it.  Did he attack the vendor?  Or, was it that while clicking on the vendor he was suddenly an enemy so Mo attacked him  Does that really happen?

Poor NPCs, they are forced to buy all the junk from players or else devs will revoke their license.
