Massively OP Podcast Episode 30: Slumbering MMOs

This week Justin and Bree talk about the painful subject of when MMOs go dark for extended downtime and technical issues. Of course, there's plenty of good news, too, such as Elite's great sales, Otherland's early access, and RIFT's brand-new calling.

It's the Massively OP Podcast, an action-packed hour of news, tales, opinions, and gamer emails! And remember, if you'd like to send in your own letter to the show, use the "Tips" button in the top-right corner of the site to do so.

Importing UI setups in RIFT can be very nice, but also having the option of having an account wide UI layout (as was possible in WAR) is still preferable to me.
I hate when things are slightly off and when moving around new add-ons, I spend far too long jumping from character to character and loading in the fixed positions then find that something could be better.

breetoplay And is running a esports tournament (of all things) with a $150k prize pool.
Because of course it's apparently an esport and of course a pre-launch game should have competitive tournaments and of course they should be dumping tons of money into events like this rather than finishing the game.

Kanbe Some people have gotten 0 keys in 3 years.  I've gotten 2 in 7 months.  I'm super lucky. But it does look like the buff was pretty high, a lot of people reporting keys on reddit, a dozen or so I guess.  So maybe we'll be lucky and those skins won't explode in prices.  But ticket scraps have a lowish droprate from chests, wiki states 31% chance to get one that includes the chance of getting 2 scraps, the actual rate might be even lower.  Thus even if we get one a month it would take us a year to get enough for a full ticket.  We can't share scraps.

EatCandy We don't classify it as a failure. It's one of Daybreak/SOE's sole successes in the last few years and made them a ton of money. I know we've said that on multiple podcasts.
As an early access title, however, it pissed a ton of people off for being a money grab, still hasn't officially launched, and recently scaled back its ambition rather a lot.

I want to play UO more but like any other sandbox game (mmo or otherwise) I just don't know what to do when I'm not given a lengthy quest chain.

They could up the drop rate 10x for keys and I doubt anyone would even notice a difference. Upping a drop rate of 0.00001% isn't really going to affect anything. And in case anyone is being a stickler I have no clue what the actual drop rate is but I know its miniscule.

Diehard Trion supporter from Rift. Defiance squarely shook my support but it was Archeage that finally killed it. Stopped actively spending money/subbing, but I will buy REX (which is still giving them money, in a way) in Rift. The shitshows with those games and some of the changes made to Rift around the time of Nightmare Tide made me lose most of my confidence in them as a company.
And yeah, the more I hear about the Mordem event in GW2, the more it sounds like it was rushed out by forcing some of their staff to work a few weekends to whip it together and now they're desperately trying to forget about it and hope everyone else does too. Glad I just spent what little time in GW2 working on finishing my Ranger S2 story and Mesmer main story.
