RIFT goes Into the Wilds today; check out the trailer

RIFT’s servers are down and getting patched with the game’s 3.4 Into the Wilds update, but don’t despair; Trion has posted a trailer to tide you over.

Massively OP’s Justin previewed the update a few weeks ago. Expect the brand-new Primalist calling and a little bit of everything, including a new zone, raid, and dungeon. “Patch 3.4 is so big,” he wrote, “that Trion Worlds considers it an expansion-worthy update in all but name and for the fact that it won’t be raising the cap past level 65.”

Enjoy the trailer and new pics!

For all my criticisms of the game and company I got sucked in, dropped $50 on the calling, a Shaper Beast mount, and some Rex to sell for Plat.

Veldan Seemed to not mess up for me either..so far… but I only played an hour or two.

The zone is gorgeous! And they fixed the reappearing ground clutter bug (at least for me) so I can finally play with foliage, which makes it look even better.

Siphaed If anything Blizzard loves Trolls more than Orcs judging by all the 5 mans, zones, and Raids that focus on them.

Detton Siphaed Cata turned Thrall into Green Jesus (I think that’s where most of the resentment comes from), WoD Orcs.

bryanjturner DugFromTheEarth hardy83 I didnt buy it with credits, I got the real money pack when it came out. Perhaps it had gone down in price by that point.

bryanjturner DugFromTheEarth hardy83 thats odd, I got it at release, for 25. Must have found a killer deal or something.

bryanjturner Ah, I thought they were a bit cheaper. I never “bought” either, as I had the SL souls from buying SL and picked up the NT souls with credits I had left over from the transition/buying REX. Thanks for the info.

Greaterdivinity DugFromTheEarth Again as I mentioned the soul packs were originally sold for the price of a boxed expansion.

DugFromTheEarth Don’t get me wrong, I agree that I think Trion is trying a bit too much to milk folks with Rift as they work on jacking up prices a bit and focusing more on the high-price items/packs.
But again, the Primalist delivers a lot more than the other two soul packs. In total, once all souls are out, it will deliver more than both soul packs combined in terms of total souls. So the increase in prices for it over the SL/NT soul packs is understandable.

DugFromTheEarth Greaterdivinity Again nope that is not correct the soul packs back when I was playing cost between 40 to 50 dollars.

Greaterdivinity DugFromTheEarth just for the record, my comment about trion getting greedy, was more aimed at the price of their products ever since nightmare tide. (I realize that many other companies try to get you to buy more than you need.)

They have always had a lineup ranging from about 20 bucks to 150, but since nightmare tide, the lower tier stuff seems to have vanished, creating a new price range from 50 to 150, with anything under 100 dollars being completely not worth the money.

Then they release the 100 dollar primalist pack a couple months ahead of time as the only way to get it, and when its finally released, the only other way to get it, is to over pay for 40 bucks of store credits, and after you buy it, it STILL more expensive than their last 2 soul packs. With their products now, you are basically paying more than in the past (and often getting a lot less).

Trion has pretty much surpassed even games like neverwinter, with the cost of their products.

DugFromTheEarth yeah, its kinda devious of Trion to make you spend more money than you need to, in order to get the class.
On the one hand, I agree it’s shitty, but it’s far from unique to Trion, to be fair. This is something that is a staple for F2P games, and for years was used by Microsoft on XBL. Even PSN uses it to a certain extent by only allowing you to load money to your account in chunks rather than just spend what you need (not sure how XBL works now).
As for why not the same, I believe both packs were a bit over $25, no? So 4 souls for each of them, while this comes with 6 at launch and I believe Trion confirmed 4 additional free souls later. That’s 10 souls total compared to the 4 per pack, and this is a class that comes with a brand new mechanic for the game entirely.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see it cheaper (I want to play one and have some credits saved, but not sure if I’m willing to give Trion more money for it or not), but I can see the justification for the price. Especially given that Trion doesn’t sell in-game content and that playing a primalist is in no way mandatory to experience that content.

Greaterdivinity Siphaed Its not just big – its possibly their biggest non-‘expansion’ patch. And during the patch cycle (so by the end of the year), they’re also adding stuff like a new raid. This is giant for a ‘patch’, even if Nightmare Tide was small for an ‘expansion’.

DugFromTheEarth hardy83 You can say that about any f2p cash shop not just trion. I’m not defending the practice…it’s pretty underhanded but every game with a cash shop does it that I know about. You always end up with “change” left over or have to buy too much to get what you want.

I’m sure we all know why.

What happened to the 25 dollar soul packs from the last 2 classes they released? Why not the same?

Seems like trion is getting really greedy. Dont know why people keep saying Rift has such a great F2P model when lately, everything costs so much for so little.

DugFromTheEarth No. it costs $35-$40.

Why?
Because unless you have credits left over, there’s no way to get the amount you need for the class without buying more credits than you need.

You’d have to get 1 $20 credit pack plus 3 $5 packs to have enough credits to get the class, or get 2 $20 backs. Either way you have to buy more than you need.

It is possible to get it with in-game credits, but that’s 5 REX (again, more credits than you need) which, depending on what server you are could cost A LOT. (like over 10k plat maybe).

One of the reasons I hate made up currencies, is that your always forced by design to buy more than you need. To manipulate the consumer thinking that they don’t want to waste the extra credits they have and might spend more to get something they want that they are just out of reach of getting.

So I found you can buy the primalist calling through the in game store.

Its 5250 store credits

3250 credits costs 20 bucks. So it looks like the primalist alone costs around $30
(or you could buy rex in game with plat, but good luck with that. With the price increase Trion recently did, rex packs are going for outrageous plat prices. Like around 2100-2400 plat for 1250 store credits)

Gah, I wish I enjoyed the combat more and, more than anything, had friends who played this. Maybe I’ll log in and visit my spooky house I was working on last year since I’m getting zero holiday love in my current game.

Greaterdivinity I haven’t been following it that closely but I did think it was an expansion, probably because EQ2 is selling their pitiful update as one lol.

Anyone see a way to get access to the new Primalist class now without buying the absurdly priced pack for $99?

Siphaed New zone* (even if it’s huge)
New class (6 souls)
New Dungeon* (just one)
New Warfront (also just one)
It’s a big patch/update, there’s no argument there. But calling it an expansion is silly. Even Nightmare Tide, an expansion that by all accounts was called small in comparison to standard MMO expansion (and compared to Storm Legion, the previous expansion) is considerably larger than 3.4.
It’s just marketing fluff trying to oversell it. I’m not “hating” on the patch by any means, I’m hyped to jump in when I get home today. I just dislike marketing fluff.

Siphaed Vanilla – no particular focus / focus on the world.  Burning Crusade – Elves/Draenai.  Wrath of the Lich King (Best Xpac Ever) –  Undead/Lich King.   Cataclysm – World focus again.  (There’s no more focus on orcs for the Horde than there is on Humans for the alliance.  If you’re an Orc doing Orc quests in Orc lands, of course you’re going to see Orc stuff.)
Mists of Pandaria, yeah, Garrosh was the main villain, but the pack focused on the Horde/Alliance impact and influence in a foreign land and bringing their war to a people who were not interested, but forced into it, and boiling it down to “derp, kill orcs” is misleading.
Warlords of Draenor?  Okay, you got me there :)  But it’s not “every single expansion”.

Metzen can stand up in front of a crowd at Blizzcon all he wants and shout “Loktar Ogar!” but it doesn’t mean the game has had an orc focus greater than anything else that has been done.  They’re one of the factions – Yeah, it’s going to come up occasionally.

Greaterdivinity
New zones, new class (with subclass souls), new dungeons, new PvP Warfont mode & map, and more.  It is an expansion.  Maybe not WoW-like in size of features (save for WoD), but certainly seems bigger than each of the last 10 EQ or 3 EQ II expansions.

Greaterdivinity Some game companies sell season passes as “expansion” worthy content even though it’s usually about an hour or two worth of content. lol

Good old marketing. Use terms people like but with no set standard so you can say anything you want.

“Expansion-worthy” is overselling it a bit, IMO, but it definitely looks to be a huge update. 4GB patch, to boot >.>
Can’t wait to get home and check out the new stuff, damn if the content does look cool.

I like that they’re focusing this expansion on one of the specific player character races instead of Generic Evil Elemental Boss #42.   Just as long as they don’t go the Blizzard approach and make every. single. expansion. focus on the same thing (Orcs, I’m so looking at you).

<applauds Trion> This is their flagship mmo and long with Trove arguably as competitive as any current mmo on the market today. I wish them the best of success on this upcoming expansion!
