Black Desert Online confirms early 2016 launch with buy-to-play model

The race for 2016 is officially on.

Daum Games confirmed this week that Black Desert Online will be coming out in North America and Europe in early 2016. This Black Desert will be significantly different than the existing Russian and Korean versions, including its business model, which will be buy-to-play with an in-game cash shop.

Daum Games Project Manager Daniel Loehr indicated that much is being done to adapt the game to the western market: “We are putting a lot of effort in the game’s Western localization. We are localizing approximate 2.5 million words into English, German, and French. Black Desert Online’s content and gameplay sytems will be adjusted to accommodate Western players and our differentiating business model.”

Black Desert launched a teaser site and new trailer to mark the occasion, the latter of which you can watch after the break.

As far as i remember EVERYTHING is in the cashshop in korean version. want your character to have better looking gear than what you start in ? cashshop, and only cashshop. If it’s B2P the better have put all that stuff inside the actual game. The korean version is basically a cashshop build on top of a hollow game.

Gottphoenix AlexanderDeLarge Perfect Hero GW2 has it exactly the way it should be. Useful account upgrades, convenience items, and cosmetic items in the cash shop. Gems tradable for ingame gold and vice versa. Nothing that can’t be obtained though ingame means.

The way I see it they need to make money to keep developing content at a good pace otherwise you get a game that struggles to produce any new content at a reasonable pace. What I dislike are games which impose lame limitations on f2p players, hello SWOTR with your credit cap, no raids and limits on group content, or other games which deny access to game systems unless you sub.

AlexanderDeLarge Perfect Hero So basically it’s f2p that’s not free.

Gottphoenix This is my worry, a B2P game with F2P content.
Still, i’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

b2p is good if you get the stuff you usually would (like full bank, inventory and character slots). It’s not so good if the cash shop is equivalent to a f2p game and the only difference is barrier to entry for spammers.

AlexanderDeLarge Perfect Hero there is nothing less intrusive about the business model of guild wars 2. You still have to unlock bag slots, character slots, bank slots etc from the shop.

II see the B2P model as a plus for the game. Hopefully it was chosen so they could  sufficiently budget decent localization efforts.
The game’s PvP focus and non-raid oriented PvE content might not be for everyone but frankly I think that’s great.   Too many MMOs in the past have tried to do everything and just ended up doing everything poorly.  I think the genre would be better served if we see more variety of games exploring different styles of gameplay.
I am still interested in seeing how this game turns out but that freaking camera blur/shake is still incredibly annoying.  They even use it for their bloody ‘Coming Soon’ text.  /rollseyes  It’s-not-that-cool for pity’s sake.  Maybe this is just a trend in Korean, like overdone bloom effects in Korean games were a few years ago.

ohforfs Sounds like it’s going to be casual PvE (no endgame raids) with PvP intended as the endgame.

If I am right about that, it’s an interesting combination and sounds like something that I could find entertaining though others might not.

shak77 SallyBowls1  Meh… Think about it, almost all new F2P games have some sort of Founders Pack designed to get you to cough up if you want to be in at launch.

twotridents digi_owl  Hopefully it’s the same, forced playstyles suck. Let the PvP’ers have as much fun as they want within their own ranks and let PvE’ers do the same.

No really… the roles aren’t THAT clear even in wvw/pvp. In WvW you have the plate train up front, and everyone else is dps in the back. The only “healer” is a staff ele that calls out a water field to blast.

In sPvP, you just have damage and bunker. Some would argue there is also a roamer… but really, a roamer is just damage that swapped a utility here or there for more mobility.

Yep, can confirm. Bring two zerker Wars and an ele to the party for buffs and max dps. Anet’s decision to make the Druid much closer to a dedicated healer is a sign that the devs believe their direction hasn’t led to much diversity. I for one absolutely welcome the Druid and its importance to endgame PvE and PvP in GW2. I hope to see more hard support roles like that in the future of the game.

Its an unfounded claim in the B2P world. I don’t know of a B2P game that also has extremely bad P2W necessities in the cash shop, and we only have one example of a B2P that went sorta F2P: GW2, and that cash shop is completely irrelevant to gameplay.

Oh thank god it’s B2P at least , while I’d prefer sub also.

Every F2P game I’ve tried in the past couple years has gotten flooded with locusts from a certain country whose goal is it seems to flood chat constantly with “”huehuehue”.

More $$ barriers the better.

Dystopiq spacecampclan captainzor Most of the “support” builds for GW2 PVE are DPS builds with a few different utilities slotted. This simply because stats mean next to nothing in terms of the effectiveness of said “support”.

Reposting my short review from the article, for those looking for a quick feedback:

Tried the witch for a few hours in the Russian OBT, the class is
interesting to play due to the mix of close and range combat. Besides,
the game seems to be worth involving in. Highlights (+/-):
+ Immersive, believable world (it feels truly alive and not designed)
+ many lovely details all around you

+ nice ambience, due to well crafted lights/world design/fitting music
+ combat system is fun, especially if you learn the combos instead of hitting the hotbar

+
I have an upper mid-tier/lower top-tier PC and the performance is great
on the highest settings (except when 200 people are stacked on a NPC
you need)
+ good questing system (short quest texts, exact
guiding, automatic running to quest area [I will disable the last two
features for me personally for more immersion/challenge])
+ cutscenes for important NPCs and quests progression

GUI has a little learning curve and might seem like a clustefuck at
first (although everything makes sense once you are used to it)

mobs are no challenge at all (played up to level 20, it might get
harder, but you get the drift quickly and they really should balance it
more for the west)
– leveling is too quick; I know there are many
people who hate leveling, but for those who do love it, it might be too
quick and since you are at level cap quite fast and there is no end game
content besides PVP, this should be different
– gender-locked classes and no other race than humans/berserker
– goblins look like Dobby

+/- Rissian OBT servers are overcrowded, I hope the western launch is handled wiser
+/- localization better be good bruh; some voices are still in Korean in the Russian client
+/- the Russian F2P options are not P2W but are not great either

Altogether,
the game makes solid attempts at major features, like combat, and
brings a good mixture of innovation and good old stuff. The biggest
disappointments are already known to followers of the game: no endgame,
stupid mobs (and fast leveling). Maybe it’s a blessing that Black Desert
will be published in the west so late, so there is a chance that the
negative points are cut out.
I will definitely play the
game at release, to at least see all areas of the game and world. If
there will be more endgame until then, I might even keep it as my main
MMORPG.

Perfect Hero Barrier for entry
less intrusive business model (hopefully)
doesn’t entirely rely on microtransactions to survive

Works incredibly well for GW2

spacecampclan Leilonii captainzor In gw2’s pvp and wvw you can clearly see the roles, but problem is in pve, beacuse of bad AI and design of encounters. But their goal is to change it in expansion and we could already see it with 1st raid boss, we will see.

Leilonii spacecampclan captainzor Some classes in GW2 could heal and support as well. The point is, the game doesn’t require anyone to fill any specific roles. EVERYONE is DPS and that makes the game shallow and repetitive. If BDO works the same way, it will suffer the same problems.

Telos_ Mochaccino DarkWombat Not all of them, some like Witch/Wizard and Ninja/Kunoichi are exactly the same, and classes like Plum/Blader and Warrior/Valkyrie have most of their basic skills the same and only1 or 2 that are different.

Leilonii

Twitticle Mochaccino DarkWombat Priest/Healer/Utility is Witch/Wizard. It can be both an elemental mage or a support – heals, mana regen and stealing, cc, shields, buff. It won’t spam heals like in WoW but this is also action combat, so it is a nice all around support for large battles and a fun AoE elemental mage in dps spec.

Leilonii

Leilonii

Mochaccino DarkWombat Yes that is a bit outdated. Female Witch is the same exact class as Wizard and they’ve introduced male/female ninjas now too.

Leilonii

Leilonii

DarkWombat Not gender locked. The classes have opposite gender counterpart – so Warrior is male warrior, Valkyrie is female, Wizard is male dps/healer mage, Witch is female version, etc.

within360 This game isn’t targeted at people who want the type of PvE instanced content you’re talking about. It’s an open world mostly sandbox game, aimed at players who enjoy OwPvP and PvE types that like crafting, trading, fishing, horse breeding, and the variety of other systems.

spacecampclan captainzor BDO has support roles – Warrior/Valkyrie are tanks and Witch/Wizard can heal, shield, buff, CC, and return mana (as well as steal it). Both classes can also do good damage if specced for it as well. Other classes have other niches.

Excited with caution. I heard all of this before.  I get wary when I see a game being “adapated” for the western market. At the end of the day though I have zero faith that they will not fuck this up in some way unimaginable. Its almost inevitable.
