World of Warcraft patch 6.2.3 is bringing Valor back

Between the Timewalking token system and Apexis Crystals, World of Warcraft has been providing players with a variety of currencies to purchase rewards after specifically removing those currencies at the start of the current expansion. Patch 6.2.3 makes the most decisive move in that direction by simply bringing Valor back as a currency, albeit just used for upgrading equipment by up to 10 item levels. Players can earn Valor by Heroic and Mythic dungeon runs as well as bonus events and the first Raid Finder of a given week.

This patch will also introduce a new set of Timewalking dungeons via a Cataclysm dungeon rotation, as well as adding Pit of Saron to Wrath of the Lich King rotations and Magister’s Terrace to The Burning Crusade rotation. On top of all of that, the patch will add new gear upgrades and new Heirloom trinkets to Mythic dungeons, giving players more rewards for various forms of content. The patch is expected to hit the game’s test servers at some point in the near future.

Koshelkin Sorenthaz Dope_Danny Well, so I can do the latest content before everyone moves on to Legion stuff when that comes out.  And also ’cause I did do the MoP leveling experience and questing and stuff, just not 100%.  Hitting level 100 would let me do more of the older stuff easier/faster and also I’ve heard that Garrisons basically pay for WoW Coins themselves for now, so getting in before Blizzard inevitably nerfs that is a good idea if I decide to stick with WoW longer term and join a Mythic raiding guild or whatnot which is what I’ve been thinking about doing.

Sorenthaz Dope_Danny Why should you buy WoD in the first place, if you got tons of stuff you haven’t done so far? I don’t understand the logic. That’s just impulse buying <.<

Ceder Sorenthaz  Well I’m guessing either before/around Blizzcon or during the anniversary/Black Friday/Cyber Monday they’ll be doing a 40/50% off sale.

ArbsX Sorenthaz  I’m not playing GW2/TOR so *shrug* WoW is one of the few current MMOs my crappy backup laptop can run ’til I get a better computer in a few months.

Sorenthaz I recently caught it on Amazon for $30 and am pretty impressed at how much content there is in Draenor considering people have been saying its the worst expansion to date. If you just play up to MoP thats not so bad either :P

Sorenthaz Might aswell do it, it could be something to do after GW2 / SWTOR Xpac’s new smell runs out after a 1-2 week. I don’t expect the patch launching until November.

Sorenthaz  Next quarterly report and or xmas stuff is soon so they almost always do a 50% sale like they did in june. Additionally, you can also probably risk waiting a bit longer and they’ll just give wod for free like they did mists before wod launched.

Ceder

Dope_Danny  You do know they’ve done multiple time limited rewards in the past right? Korkron wolf, garrosh heirlooms, and more. This isn’t anything new, in fact, this and the upgrade stuffs is exactly what they did at the end of mists.  To me this is just their same ole same ole.  Its why not a small number of people just wait until the end of an expansion to play more because that’s when they can get all these things more easily instead struggling through the expansion prior to this.

I can tell you for a fact (and coming from different fields) that customers absolutely will drop a hobby or a brand and never use anything like it again, for various reasons.
That’s especially true in videogames, as we’ve seen with the Wii and mobile gaming.

People play because friends play or because it’s popular. When they get bored or feel alone, they leave and forget all about the market.
Nobody found the six millions players lost by WoW appearing in their customer base on a sunny day. On the contrary, competitors like EVE or all the WoW wannabes have only been shrinking since release. SWTOR is the most notorious because it had the biggest brand, but there isn’t a single WoW clone on the market that is going up (except FFXIV, ignoring the yearly reports being very quiet on its performance of course, but you’ll find plenty of fake data if you look for it).
Nobody’s taking down WoW. Nobody’s in good shape in that entire MMO segment.

Dope_Danny Sorenthaz I don’t really care about that.  It’s more the desire to catch up on content that I haven’t done because I barely touched Cataclysm and I played MoP for a short time.   There’s plenty of stuff pre-WoD that I could distract myself with if I chose to.

Sorenthaz This adds no new content, just more carrots to rerun old dungeons and the things everyone has been complaining about all year. Save your money and wait, it will be free when Legions out anyway. Treat yourself to something on steam or an obscenely large ice cream or something.

Well theres a desperate placebo patch if ever there was one.

It kind of makes me wonder how back Q3 numbers must be if they are trying to pad Q4 with this “TIME LIMITED” stuff. I expected no more big drops but man, to go back on valour and put a cash shop as a carrot for raiding for a limited time? last time they did this was the garrosh heirloom weapons and we saw the sub drop before that.

I mean dont get me wrong, good to see theres even a chance for a cash shop mount to be attained in game, but christ are some people taking this bait hard claiming “based blizz has woken up finally” without seeing this is just a way to pad numbers.

*also insert some tin foil that someone buying tokens to raid to try and get a mount get blizz more money than if the mount was just on the store :p

Bleeeeegh… the temptation to get back into WoW is somehow quite strong.  But I don’t want to buy WoD while it’s at the stupidly priced $50.  Almost thinking of just subscribing and then playing through everything pre-WoD and prepping characters for WoD when it’s on sale (which will almost certainly be happening by late November).

Serrenity Estranged Line with more hugs For the most part, I agree. Other games can contribute to it, but nothing will be a WoW killer – there won’t be a singular game that is solely responsible for the downfall of WoW (other than WoW itself). Right now, it’s basically attrition ‘warfare’.
100k subs leave for this game, 100k subs leave for that game, 100k subs leave because content is stagnant, 100k subs leave because they can’t afford it, 150k subs rejoin because new content, 200k subs leave because 3 months later, no new content has been released, so on and so forth.

It’s just a waiting game at this point. I hope WoW lasts a good long while – despite the content stagnating something fierce as of late (I haven’t touched the game in like, 3 months), I do enjoy WoW and the Warcraft universe in general. It eventually will crumble underneath its own weight, though.

Estranged Line with more hugs I think, as has always been the case, the only thing that can kill WoW is … WoW.  As to where those players are going, I think we have to assume that a fair number of them (not a majority or anything, just a not insignificant number) are leaving MMOs altogether.  I think the WoW is the type of game that is a lot of people’s ‘one and only.’

Heating up? When you look at the revenue (from real numbers, not from superfakedata), nobody’s heating up.
Level scaling, level agnostic zones, raids and all are not some miracle to take over WoW, those are desperate moves to save their products from the failing EQ/WoW model (interesting to see that EQ2 and WoW are included in those changes).

And let’s be real, Wildstar and SWTOR are never going to threaten WoW, they didn’t before, and won’t in the future. WoW is sinking by itself with no help needed.

So…enjoy a new currency to go along with other currencies for a year until we release the next xpac. That should tide people over.

Well, in about 6 days, early access players to a certain game will have all content become relevant.  No box required. No sub required for much of it.  This game isn’t 4 years old yet. The competition is heating up. Might as well come and enjoy something new for a month or so and let Blizzard make their announcements.

About time for one of their patches.  Too bad WildStar relaunched with too much traffic, would really be putting the heat on WoW.

Don’t hate WoW, but they can’t manage to regurgitate old content correctly.

Just wait, they will be scaling levels this go around and making all dungeons, questing and raids viable. LOL

Because the current team is lost and instead of moving forward they are trying to recapture the magic of the past be slowly reintroducing stuff the old team did.
This patch is sad and continues to expose the only thing this game has going for it, raids.

Koolthulu Nyres We got some insight when the Gamecom announcement included “Beta this year”

On one end, very unlikely to ship this year.

OTOH, Oct ’16 is possible but pretty pessimistic if they hit ’15 Beta.

Valor was great when you could buy great gear with it, even tier gear (WotLK and Cata)…now they add valor only to upgrade your armor to +10 ilvl. What worries me is that Blizzard believe that players will stay subbed to grind valor in order to add 10 ilvl to their gear..
Another thing worries me, is that this un-expected patch, probably means that Legion beta is far..far away

Lotsofheals The expansion is…is it even a year old yet? It had like 234798709870987 tiers and one of the largest increases to gear levels since wrath and you want MORE content?

I think the problem is that you are burning through it at a pace that is not representative of the masses.

Nyres Why do people think that Blizzard games/expansions are going to come out within months of being announced? If it releases before next Summer, I’ll be amazed. I’m thinking release will be September/October 2016.

I feel like whoever (whomever?) was in charge of WoD has had their office moved down into the basement, Office Space style.  And the rest of the folks are trying to quietly un-do all the damage of those poor decisions.  Every step back towards “fun” is a great and good thing.

Wait, will we use Valor to upgrade specific gear, or ANY of our gear? I’ve got a mix of fully upgraded crafted WoD, upgraded (695) Tanaan gear and a few 700+ BoE’s I found on the auction house, for an item level of 700 as a PvE Hunter. Can I take these and upgrade ALL my random assortment of gear?!

Hallow’s End goes live in a few days, but every time I think about going back to WoW, I remember the Cataclysmic nuking of all classes’ skills and trees, and that’s it….  Just….no.

So that is what WoD sums up to be:  content removed only to be added again as “patch features” because they really couldn’t bother actually creating any new patch features for the game?
