LOTRO ushers in the Siege of Minas Tirith

Lord of the Rings Online players have finally made it to one of Middle-earth’s most famous metropolises: Minas Tirith.

Today the game has released Update 17: The Siege of Minas Tirith, which finds the titular city in the midst of a pitched battle. Players can explore a new region, Old Anórien, as well as take on two epic battles based in and around Minas Tirith. There’s also a 13-chapter addition to the main storyline with Volume IV: Book 4. Players can access the new book without having to complete any previous epic story installments.

Other changes with Update 17 include improvements to the cosmetic weapon system, the ability for Beornings to use bows, and many changes to crafting’s tenth tier.

Telos_ And how is it possible to create such huge MMO from the scratch? Tell us please. The only real way is to make world very small – no thanks. I waited 8 years but i got one of the biggest MMORPG worlds.

And no you (and all other people) NEVER will get ‘proper LOTR mmo’ because you didn’t support this MMO. No money – no honey.

I’m still hoping someday there will be an MMO based on the beginning of the first age of middle earth when Morgoth was still around(instead of the end of the third age which lotro is set in). I know it’s unlikely to happen due to rights issues, but I can dream.

Cambruin Last month I tried to update my account information and couldn’t get it to take. Also tried to update my CC information, also ran into a problem. Gave up, so now I’m staying an unsubbed account.

Telos_ Middle Earth Online was playable in 2003. If they kick that game out the door back then, they would be the current juggernaut MMO in the west.
C’est la vie…

8 years too late.  I said it back then, and i’ll say it now, Lotro should’ve released all these major zones at launch, such as Rohan, Mines of Moria, Minas Tirith, etc..  Instead, they released these zones in a linear fashion due to the story progression, which was always a bad idea to begin with, since most of their players wouldn’t stick around and wait (which became true).
8 years later, and the game looks outdated with terrible models, animations, textures, and a terrible combat system.  Hopefully a proper LOTR mmo will come out in the future.

I only need to buy 6$ worth of Turbine points so I guess I’ll get this in the end.

DarkWombat paragonlostinspace If they’d done it quickly then people would be complaining about that too.

Glad they added swift-horses on every tier of city.

Amazing update so far, the city is gigantic and gorgeous, quests are fun, new battles are interesting and engaging, 11/10 so far! Fix the crashing and it’ll be perfect

DarkWombat paragonlostinspace Strongly disagree. They did it to evade overload on remaining servers which are still on old hardware.

cdquarles paragonlostinspace Darn it I missed it. I have the option now, I logged in last the week before that. :(

LiquidElectron paragonlostinspace The last time I logged in was three weeks ago now that I check. The option to move is now up. Sucks that you still don’t have the option. :(

paragonlostinspace LiquidElectron It’s in Michel Delving, as you make your way from the horse/hunter port area to the Mayor/Mailbox/Vault.  It’s where the big fountain has always been.

cdquarles paragonlostinspace  hmm that’s odd. I’d swear the last time I checked was around that time and then a week later as well. Turbine directed me to a post on their forums that didn’t have any information. I’ve only ever been able to get this when I attempt it. (see picture below from August 27th)

LiquidElectron paragonlostinspace Ugh. :( That sucks. Where at in the Shire is that shrine? I’ve been watching Nimrodel server like a hawk and haven’t seen any notices, but it’s possible I still could have missed it.

I’d like to go to the location and make sure there isn’t a shrine in our servers Shire. :( I’m starting to think it’s going to be months btw before the transfer happens. I’ve only got one capped character, the others I tend meander around with off and on.

paragonlostinspace LiquidElectron It must have, because I came across a shrine of some sort in the Shire that listed the first X people to move off of Silverlode.  Hopefully they didn’t pay for it.  I had no inkling about the server transfers…well a tiny one, until a few days ago I got the urge to play for a while (I only have 4 level 20-30ish characters right now).

Imagine my surprise, logging into a ghost…world.  And then trying to read the forums and figure out what was going on.  All I gleaned was that I have to wait…weeks? before I can move.  Lovely.

paragonlostinspace Nimrodel opened on October 13th for transfers to Ark, Crick, Gladden and Landy.

I appreciate crafting mats stacking to 500, but I’m not sure about the streamlining to farming and cooking. Yes, it’s “easier” now…but it also feels like it’s lost a lot of flavor. I really liked all the different kinds of food (and vegetarian options, hooray for a game that doesn’t go “would you like meat, or fish?”), and there’s something about growing a field of potatoes, or an orchard of apple trees, that just isn’t there with a generic “Field of Anorien Crops” :(

LiquidElectron paragonlostinspace Yeah I can’t recall if Silverlode even offered the transfer yet. :(  I know that Nimrodel hasn’t offered to move at all yet. (double sigh) As an aside I almost went with SIlverlode back in 2007 when the game was going live, but decided at the last moment that Nimrodel would be my choice. heh.

paragonlostinspace Same, but on Silverlode.  I must have missed the initial rush.

I’m so far behind on Lotro, but I think this update may be what I need to get going again. More than anything else in the LoTR world, Minas Tirith is the place I NEED to visit. I just have about 20 lvls to get through first, ugh.

my biggest disappointment in Lotro was when I found out that Minis Tiriith wasn’t in the game at launch. I  remember traveling to Bree and seeing how huge it was and that got me excited because if this is how big Bree is then the real cities must be huge…

DarkWombat paragonlostinspace Strongly agree, I’m really frustrated by the whole thing. I tried tweeting to them to get to a more concrete answer and why and got sent a link that was the information that we already knew. :(

paragonlostinspace The server transfers have been handled about as bad as possible. They have been dragging it out for months. Terrible.

Still waiting to learn when I can transfer from Nimrodel server (which is one of the closing servers) to one that is remaining open. They’ve given us titles for the server closing and still no date when I can move my herd to a new home. Until that happens I have no interest in anything new going on, Nimrodel is a ghost town now since the closures.

AilsaN10 I like their approach to the new armour sets. Give you a baseline of survivability, then you plug in DPS, healing, or more survivability as needed for your build.

Sigbjorn I know that feeling, man. Hell, I haven’t even finished the Update 16 stuff yet. (Osgiliath is a slog when you’re trying to run it solo.)

The crafting changes are great! Especially the “quality of life” changes like increasing the stack size for crafting ingredients.

Between this and Heart of Thorns, I have way too much to play. And Fallout 4 is just a few weeks away.
