Star Trek Online sees a New Dawn

The mirror universe is colliding with our own in Star Trek Online’s Season 11, and it’s going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better.

Season 11: New Dawn is a massive content update that takes place following the Iconian War, starting with featured episode Sunrise where captains will investigate a dying star. There’s also a crossover with the Terran Empire at Deep Space Nine, the new admiralty system, a revamp of the Cardassian arc, and a Badlands battlezone for level 60 players.

Cryptic’s been heavily promoting Season 11 lately with giveaways, and the studio is handing out three free starships today to celebrate the update. You can read the full patch notes before warping into the game and check out the trailer below.

tanek_09 RicharddeLeonIII and, each is in a different faction, so you need a Rear Admiral in each faction.

Still, nice prize. It’ll come around again.

RicharddeLeonIII Unfortunately, the free “ships for all Captains” can ONLY be claimed if you reach Rear Admiral rank.  Seems silly since the upgrade token could be claimed and held even if you could not use it yet.  :(

BKone Funny, as I recall, Cataclysm was not very well liked overall, and the retention was bad in Blizzard’s management’s eyes; ergo the changes in Mists of Panderia, which by contrast was considered a more successful expansion then Cataclysm.

darkthunder84 BKone And it was a total success. 10 million boxes sold + subbed.

The new FE was decent trek.  Very little in the way of combat, too much Technobabble, but given the subject matter it’s something that can be let slide.

BKone No one complained? You must be wearing your big boy rose-tinted glasses, or have a REALLY bad memory. There were MASSIVE complaints about the Cataclysm revamp. A lot of the new questlines were pretty good, but they retired (i.e REMOVED) a ton of questlines that were good as well. All in the name of “stream lining” the game.

I patched and logged in again today after about a two-year year absence to claim my upgrade token, and wow, it was like playing a whole new game. One I would need a telephone directory-sized manual to understand again. :D

Armsman You very well know why that are doing that to the Cardie missions. Those are the last remaining missions that the game launched with. Absolutely subpar by todays standards. And they weren’t high quality when the game launched in 2010 either. It was a rushed job and it shows.
Also Blizzard has revamped their old world in their MMO in one go in 2010. Noone complained. Cryptic revamps, everyone goes mad…

Meh. New reputations, new ships, new battlezones. Same shit, different skins. I can’t stand the way Cryptic rung this game. My life’s dream is that a new Trek game will come out with a competent dev behind it and no Chinese publishers involved.

IDK that I’d call this Season Update ‘massive’ – it’s pretty average for a standard STO Season update (not that this is a bad thing); but t’s nowhere near the size of the two free Expansions they’ve done (Legacy of Romulus and Delta Rising) In fact while they are adding two new PvE queue events, they are retiring (read removing) two existing ones; “Mine Trap” and “The Breach” – and culling the ‘Cardassian Struggle story arc of 7 missions (and admittedly, these were some of the most tedious – read long with massive amounts of MOBs to dispatch; and not really challenging or interesting either); but they’re culling 11 missions down to 4 new reworked missions that now have voice over.
That’s the one thing I’ll never understand about Cryptic in general in that instead of reworking or moving content (IE they could take these story missions and make the majority of them into ‘system patrol’ missions in the DS9 area; but they just wholly remove them (and it’s not the first story arc that’s received this type of treatment) – so yeah, I don’t understand that for an MMO that’s still light on playable content Cryptic often decides to just wholly remove existing content.

Maybe the Mirror universe can provide them with a programming team who knows how to squash bugs.
