Sword and Bored: The seams of the world

Have you ever noticed little shiny, out-of-place lines on the ground in video games? These lines are actually seams between textures, and they’re one of my biggest pet peeves in an MMO. And though you usually can’t fall through these parts of the world, sometimes the collision maps coincide perfectly with these textures, so your character will hit the texture edge just wrong and fall right on through.

These past couple of weeks, Sword and Bored has used that game world construction foible as a springboard to comment on customer service in MMOs and self-help features that somehow don’t always seem to help. This week, Mo finally escapes his free-fall, but that doesn’t mean all is well. Take a look at this week’s comic…

CthulhuDawg And no November 16th either. I hope this is just a temporary break due to unforeseen circumstances.

It’s nice when games have a /stuck command but I hate it when it requires your avatar to be absolutely stationary.
While I don’t recall the game (years ago, might have been CoH), I’d gotten ‘stuck’ on something but I kept bouncing – like my avatar was lagging and rubber banding. The stuck command wouldn’t work because my avatar was falling/getting caught on an edge of something, bouncing up a fraction and falling again – continuously. The logout command wouldn’t work either as my character was considered to be in motion. Had to force close and log in again (still stuck) a few times before it corrected itself.
That was fun…

CthulhuDawg Anarchy Online did (still does) as well. It was (in some places, still is) highly abusable to skip terrain/mobs/content though…

If I remember right back in the day EQ had a /stuck command that would displace your character a few in game feet if you had been idle for a period of time. I remember using it to get off of some damn tree.

Sometimes those seam glitches can be fun. Other times, or at least based on frequency…well…

paragonlostinspace on the flip side, I like when people call me for help, and i know exactly what they need after the first sentence, but they still spend 5 mins telling me whats wrong.

Damonvile  Ran into this in the WoW Battleground Alterac Valley once, near one of the towers on the Horde side of the map. The furthest north one as I recall. Kept falling and falling with this blue/white sky deal, was a major pain in the backside. I ended up having to wait for the battle to end and toss me out before I was able to get out of it. Ugh.

My favorite customer service interactions (said with great sarcasm) is when I lay out the problem in a line by line easy to understand with all the little bits and pieces that they need to know and when they reply to the ticket it’s quite obvious that they really didn’t read the ticket. Grr. After pushing a quarter century online doing this dance, I know what they need and I know when I see an issue that won’t be taken care of by logging in and out.
