Elite’s Horizons beta starts November 9

Development for Elite: Dangerous is moving right along, as evidenced by a recent livestream featuring Frontier founder David Braben that’s been summarized on Reddit.

The Horizons beta will deploy in two stages, with ships coming in the 1.5 release on November 9th followed by the 2.0 patch on November 24th. Schedule your sick days accordingly. Braben also mentioned NPC wingmates and crew, planetary schematic maps, an orrery map, and more, though no time table was given.

The 2.0 patch will also introduce the early stages of crafting, according to the livestream notes. There’s a lot more, too, and you can either click the summary link or watch the full stream, both of which are after the cut.

I try to practice sneaking into the station every time I land. I was also trying to follow his guide to assist off flying. Gee golly do I stink at that.

Yeah we need more of those. I guess he gets more out of the game because he has a plan and skills to follow it up. His comments shows he’s immersing himself in the hide & seek game with his adversary.

It was obvious that he was skilled in handling his ship in addition to reading the map and use it for his benefits. Not only was he mastering to avoid being detected but also was very good in combat when he couldn’t avoid it anymore. Also, the tactics in the space station at the end impressed me.

So this must be a text book example of how you can do it.

The guys pretty awesome. Videos like this make elite seem really thrilling. I have yet to have this level of excitement when I play though

I don’t go there either anymore. The main difference between that forum and these forums here on MOP is that here you can actually deal with trolls, while over there the mods protect the trolls. That’s why we’ve managed to get rid of so many trolls here on MOP. In the Frontier forums people leave instead and the majority left now are trolls, and naysayers who just make fun of SC with sarcasm and ridicule.

I’m actually only going to post one Elite video but I’m doing that not out of bias but because the poster I’m showing does awesome videos. I would point you to any of his videos and say enjoy the ride. But this one showcases the thing that I think Elite does way better than SC and that’s the intricacy of flight. This is all about the guy trying to escape a situation and how he uses the nuanced ship settings to try to escape. Enjoy.

Finally we have just standard fighter combat. I couldn’t find a good PvP video but my morning is wasting away and I want breakfast. Besides I wanted to show you some elite stuff too.

This one is the gamescom multicrew demo. It gives what they say is a decent representation in how it’s going to be fighting in and against the larger ships. Still work in progress though.

This first one is from the latest presentation showing the beginnings of the persistent universe. Not a whole lot of action, but an explanation of the gameplay and you get to see them do a mission sort of. Skip ahead to the 27 minute mark to bypass the tally bits, but fee free to go back later or skim through to the interview with Gary Oldman and the behind the scene of the making of Squadron 42 (the campaign).

Oh yeah I wanted to point out that sC ships are super detailed with a whole bunch of moving parts and what not. Hatches and doors. The damage modeling was a really big deal. They used a Gatling type weapon to write their name into one of the ships. I don’t know how important that is. Kinda think at some point you’ve gone too far. In actuality the ship wouldn’t be able to take that much damage before blowing up anyway. But crashes cause pieces to come off of the ship. Flight performance gets affected. You can black out from pulling too many G’s. Is it any wonder the damn thing isn’t out yet. Like I said very detailed. And that’s on top of the fully scripted branching single player campaign that they got big name Hollywood actor to performance capture.
In short the games have different scopes. If I had to choose one or the other, it would be SC. But I don’t. And SC WILL NOT BE IN FULL RELEASE UNTIL NEXT YEAR. What I would suggest you do if you want a feel is watch some videos. I am going to provide you with what I think are some important pieces. That showcase some stuff. The elite video I’m going to show you is by a guy who has probably given me some of the most thrilling stuff ever in Elite. Feel free to go to his page and check out more. The SC video I will show is a live demonstration of the multicrewnpkay and the alpha of the persistent universe. Please keep in mind the SC STUFF IS STILL IN DEVELOPMENT.
This may take me a bit. I get sucked into these videos when I hunt them down.

They both are going about things differently. One of the biggest difference is how they decided to build the games. Elite is being built and sold in pieces. They got their flight model together, built their 1:1 model of the Milky Way galaxy and then pushed that thing out the door as fast as possible. Graphics are good with the jumps and the star and planet detail. Ships look decent especially when they blow up. I will say blowing up a ship is very satisfying in this game. Even if the weapons themselves are varying levels of meh.
Problem is when it came out, and some would argue still, there wasn’t jack bone to do. All the stations had pretty much the same kind of missions with little to no instruction on how to do them. Goody goody! You have a billion stars to pick from but all you do is look for black boxes, kill x number of pirates, or cart this or that to here or there.
But things slowly got better. They added mining. They gave you the ability to team up with wingmates. Added community goals that let you work towards things like building a space station for this or that government. And then the powers thing was added so that you could get bonuses for pledging to a faction. Finally they have an arena combat. It’s coming along nicely. This ground game could open it up even more. So day you may be able to move around in your ships.
Sc is a bit different. All that is out for it right now is one of the landing areas and the arena commander simulator, which will be playable in the full game. You can do some racing, some death match and capture the flag stuff. Should be more in the next month or so when they up it to the actual persistent universe.
One of the things Riberts said was how he hated companies pushing out incomplete games and then DLCing you to death with things that should have been there from the get go. That’s not a swipe at Braben. But he wants to make his game complete fir it to come out. It could be argued that they should have followed the same track and concentrated on just the flight and left the details behind but that’s just not who Riberts is.
Multi crew ships and ship roles and crew roles even will be very important to the game. You will be able to leave your ship while in space to enter another’s for good and nefarious purposes. There will b specialized stations on bigger ships for specific purposes. In one of the demonstration videos you can see a guy managing power out but and shields. There at gunner pods. The mining is going to very complex where you have to pay attention to to composition and pressure. There will be ships made for the purpose of dismantling or hauling or repairing outer ships.
Missions will be generated dynamically to meet the needs of the economy. You will be able to get out of your ship planetside and meet up with contacts to get other mission. No you won’t be able to land your own ship on the planet and you won’t be able to explore every corner of every planet you go to. There will be points of interest in a smaller galaxy than elite. I personally don’t find that a problem. Like I said, elite has all those stars but they’re all pretty much the same. Unless you are an astronomy buff and really just have to find the star where the aliens from V came from or you want to catch up to The Voyager space probe, then it’s not gonna matter in the long run.

The chances of you getting an objective answer is about as likely as Star Citizen releasing next year (in a final state).

Probably the least helpful and most ignorant answer you could have given. Seeing as all these videoed show a game. It’s an incomplete game. But it is a game in the process of being built that currently is playable. People making money off twitch streams daily.
If you’re not gonna help the guy, just keep your bias to yourself.

Star Citizen will have a single player campaign that can be completely skipped. While there is an overall story in the galaxy, you are by no means in any rails. You will be free to make your own story as you co along. Events are set to happen in the game that move along an overall narrative that you may or may it take part in.

Actually if Battlefront does as good with their DLC as they did with Battlefield 4, I’d count that as a blessing. I paid, what, 40 bucks for the pass for BF4 and they have gone well beyond what they promised. Initially it was supposed to be four DLC packs and they’ve gotten up to seven I think. Now becaus I bought Elite when I did, I kinda got that same deal. And it’s pretty much the same deal for all those games you mentioned. If Elite offered that deal, they’d never hear another word out of me. But the lifetime pass costs way more than that now so nope.

Infraction Elite is release, SC is not

Elite is very simplistic graphically and control wise, and the universe isn´t populated at all.

SC has a physics based flight model that takes everything into account, weight, thruster placement etc. , basically Kerbal plus extras.
In Elite you´re a cockpit, in SC you are character whcih will have a story and a single player campaign.
Also SC´s universe will have a complete economy with NPC ships going about their business.

Infraction In elite dangerous, you have a massive galaxy where you make your own story up as you go along. In star Citizen, they’ll probably give you a story to play through.

At the moment, Elite: Dangerous is a full game, with landing expansions coming. Star Citizen is still at the alpha stage. The Flight model is different. Elite uses a roll/pitch with slight Yaw while SC uses roll, pitch and yaw to the same degree. Although I wasn’t happy with the Elite Model at the beginning, I prefer it over SC’s now.

GoJammit Not when you compare it to the other DLC which are coming through the industry at the moment. Have you seen the price for the DLC in Star Wars : Battlefront or Destiny. etc.

But Like I said. I think it would have been better if the owner’s discount was about 50% instead of 25%.

The gameplay from that video looks nothing like the concept art or the trailer, at all. Are these buildings and the planet surface still in graybox phase or is the video compression bad? The textures in the video look like pre 2005 era.
Look at Half Life 2 for better looking terrain

The Star Citizen thread is a complete cesspool. It’s full of banned forum users from RSI and other trolls, who have a safe haven in the FD forums. If you want to discuss with trolls like Jcrg99 then go there. The mods themselves say that most of their time is used to moderate that single thread …

I wouldn’t go as far as calling it a rip off but I agree with you that expansions could be cheaper than they are now. Optimally, an expansion shouldn’t cost more than 1/3 of the full game and contain substantial amount of new features so that players feel they get value for money and not just a patch. Also, I think they should’ve waited to charge for expansions until the game was more feature complete, compared to the original Elite series.
Instead they could’ve sold real world commercials in-game for graphic cards, PC’s or whatever, on shiny neon boards in space. an in-game shop of game related stuff would also help paying for running costs.

But, as you, I have free lifetime expansions, so I may be biased. Since this isn’t a problem for me personally I tend not to think about it often. :)

GoJammit
Guest
GoJammit

They are screwing with the natural way that expansions are sold. An old game is made cheaper and then you pay some smaller amount for an expansion. Everyone pays the same price for an expansion. But for some reason they are pretending like they are selling a brand new ful game to everyone like its a sequel where the people before are getting some loyalty discount.
You feel like you’re getting burned because that’s the only logical way to look at it based on decades of gaming sales standards. People talking about but you got a year worth of game should really stop. First of all the shiny wore of on this game pretty fast. And I have found little value in what has been added thus far. It has improved. I will not bent that. But if I didn’t already have the lifetime pass, I doubt highly you would be convincing me to pretty much pay full price for a new game on this addition.
It’s my only real problem with them. And I’ll sing it from the mountaintop every time it comes up. Their scheme is a rip off

PhoenixDfire Kheran Cotic_OP It’s not really all that bad there. I get involved in the odd “omg I got griefed” thread but overall it’s pretty tame. I can think of many worse forums.

MrFester  Why have a go at Vikingr? He’s a fan of both games (as you’ll probably find most people who backed one backed the other as well). Please don’t bring any anti SC feeling into the Elite threads because you’ll find most people will defend most games.

Xijit I don’t feel burnt when I backed it to one of the highest levels, even though we lost the Offline mode. We lost a few people over the Offline issue but nowhere near as many as the press made out. Best way that to think of these seasons is a yearly sub that’s free to play after that year is done. There will be hundreds of hours of new things to do over the next year so it’s going to break down at a let less than a £1 or $1 an hour.

Personally speaking though (even though it doesn’t effect me because of the level I backed at),  I do think that existing owners who backed at Beta or bought the game in the last year should have got a bigger discount than 25%. On the other hand, considering the amount of work Frontier are putting in, they’ve got to get paid!

The one thing that you suddenly realise when you drive around in the SVR is how big your ship actually is. You suddenly realise that no wonder your Python is hard to fly close to a planet’s surface because it’s a lot bigger than a 747!

For an idea of the ship sizes have a look at this! :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4bEQlVvUvI

ex-pack comes with the base game, but people who paid $60 last year still have to shell out another $60~ for the expansion.
That is pretty shitty considering that most of the game play till now has been shuffling cargo between outposts.
