H1Z1 warns players of full server wipe happening tomorrow

Can an apocalypse happen after the apocalypse? That’s the ironic state of affairs for H1Z1, which will be experiencing a full server wipe tomorrow with a new patch that promises to make the game more stable. The wipe will get rid of all inventory, characters, names, storage, and player-built structures while leaving account items intact.

Daybreak said that it’s taking measures to combat teaming in the solo versions of Battle Royale, such as possibly restricting vehicle use to one player apiece. The studio also warned players against violating the rules in these game modes: “We’ll be reviewing cases in which we think teaming is disrupting the game, and potentially taking action against those accounts.”

Good to know that in 2015 there is still one MMO studio out there brave enough to fight against the evils of socialization and teamwork.

Teaming? Why is it bad if people group together? Massively, some meat to the reporting would be nice for those who don’t play a game and don’t know about the dynamics …

Telos_  Agreed in general, however if there are massive new systems to implement and chunks of solid content then wipes are sometimes needed, but yeah, this is H1Z1.

Full wipes are always bad for a persistent game.  I’m glad i never got into this game, otherwise all my progress would’ve been wiped.

schlag sweetleaf My guess is CN & DBG will get to this at some point, but PS2 & EQN seem to have been called as primary targets.

The zombie subgenre of horror has waxed and waned in popularity just like every other subgenre. It hasn’t been one long continuous stream since Romero. Slasher films were all the rage in the 80’s more than any other type of horror. Then we went through a vampire phase. And then the “found footage” phase. Sure, zombie stuff was still popping up here and there but it was overshadowed by other fads. Now zombies are the current fad and vampires and slashers and werewolves and ghosts are taking a back seat. These classic horror themes wax and wane in popularity.

Karl_Hungus Mansemat Higgens agemyth Are you seriously trying to argue that the popularity of the cultural significance of George Romero on the Zombie genre that resulted in hundreds of movies and games which ultimately gave us the Walking Dead wasn’t popular enough? That a 40+ year old movie that caused all this isn’t popular enough to have caused all this media to proliferate as a result. Please…

Higgens Mansemat Karl_Hungus agemyth I know what a fad is. I can give you clear examples of them like members only jackets, cabbage patch kids, wearing your clothes backwards, or more recently, the ice bucket challenge. These are fads. Trying to imply that something that is popular and has been popular consistently for decades, is not a fad. That would be like trying to say that mobile phones are a fad because the iphone is popular when mobile phones have been popular for decades. That’s not a fad.

Zombies have been a part of human culture for thousands of years. And so has lycanthropy and countless other horror devices still used today. But few of the examples you’ve provided have even come close to the cultural phenomenon that the Walking Dead has become and the companies making a mad dash to capitalize on this new level of zombie popularity is what makes it a fad that will inevitably diminish back to its previous levels of popularity.

Mansemat Karl_Hungus Higgens agemyth You seem to not know what a fad is. A thing can exist for a long while and not be a fad.
Fad-
a temporary fashion, notion, manner of conduct, etc., especially one followed enthusiastically by a group.
While zombies are not temporary, this high level of appeal most certainly is.

Existing in media does not equal a fad. You are flat wrong. You named ~10 movies from a ~30 year span. I could name 30 from the last 3 years alone.

aboomwithaview Yeah zombies really need to become the primary threat over other players.   Primary example: State of Decay.  In that game during the night zombies became a terror and you had to be very cautious/stealthy while out at night.  Zombie hordes were a real threat, and surviving was the primary focus rather than PvP.
Ideally H1Z1 should be a game where yeah PvP is a thing but it’s not the end all/be all and more often than not you’ll have to band with random strangers to survive against zombies while out/about and then work together to establish settlements and whatnot.  ’cause getting bit/scratched by a zombie or going through a high density area without proper equipment should be enough to contract the virus and slowly turn your character into a zombie.  And while vaccines should be craftable by highly skilled crafters, the resources/materials required would be scarce and thus an economy would be built around that + equipment crafting.
H1Z1 seems to be very very very very slowly moving towards that stuff, but they’ve been so caught up in Battle Royale and their CSGO-esque crates that they’ve really lost track of what made H1Z1 alluring to begin with, imo.

Karl_Hungus Mansemat Higgens agemyth All of those movies have reanimated dead, which is fundamentally what a zombie is.

So what about all the other Zombie games that have been coming out over the past 30 years? Do they suddenly not count? Resident Evil, Evil Dead, Ghost and Goblins, Dead Rising, Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, Stubbs the Zombe, Hunter: The Reckoning, Onechanbara, Area 51, and tons more. You make it sound like this is some new thing when it’s been here the entire time. Like I said, it’s only a fad to those that are just now catching on to something that’s been popular in not just the movies, but comics, books, magazines, and video games for decades. It’s been here the entire time. As magazines like Fangoria and Monster that covered horror and particularly zombie movies,  EC comics, and mass productions of theater bound zombie movies died out, that interest just moved to other forms of media which has now bleed over to television and into the MMO scene. But they’ve been here the entire time. Just because you’re just now catching on doesn’t mean it hasn’t been popular with millions of other people the entire time. How else could it continue to exist if it wasn’t consistently popular for it to have persisted for decades?.

Some of those movies you named are not zombie movies, but that’s neither here nor there. Zombies have been a part of popular culture for quite a long time but the recent surge in popularity brought about by the commercial success of the Walking Dead show has turned it into a fad. A bunch of companies are now trying to get a piece of the Walking Dead money pie before the zombie bubble bursts and the market becomes too saturated causing the zombie plot device to be shuffled back into the deck to be reused at a later date. Daybreak would not be making this game if zombies weren’t the “in” thing right now.

Higgens Mansemat Karl_Hungus agemyth The only people that are calling it a fad are the ones that have recently taken an interest in it because it’s the first time they’ve had a hit on regular TV with zombies.. Like I said, Its heavily been in the maintstream media since the 80s when movies like Evil Dead 1 & 2, Pet Cemetary, Creepshow, Night of the Creeps, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Return of the Living Dead, Re-Animator, House by the Cemetary, etc. were extremely prevalent at the movie theaters. It’s not just now getting popular. They’ve been a part of popular culture for decades.

BigBearSmokeyMgee Mansemat Karl_Hungus agemyth I love zombies. I’ve been a fan since the 80s. But even I didn’t buy into this (F2P) game because I knew before hand how the zombies weren’t a key part of the games development and was just another FPS with zombies added as an afterthought. This game either needs better directional development towards its original purpose or it needs to die. That I can agree on.

The problem is that despite being saturated with zombie games none of them actually deliver what they initially set out to do. Dayz mod, Dayz standalone, H1Z1, Miscreated etc all fail to deliver on the zombie front each due to their own development problems. Until that true zombie mp experience is scratched I cant see it slowing down.
Sure we have exceptions, Project Zomboid is pretty neat but will never appeal to the vast majority of the “Braaiiiinns” crowd so people are left seeking their zombie dreams in a smattering of titles.

This made me chuckle the other day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzQK_pzbxOY & highlights why people are constantly buying into each “new” zombie game hoping for that specific fix, I know im still looking for it & a developer that actually fulfils its proposed road map.

Mansemat Karl_Hungus agemyth Its obviously a fad. It popped into the zeitgeist like 8 years ago. While they have been around in media for awhile it was no where near the extreme it is at now.

Karl_Hungus While I was sad to see glen go, I think the show needed to be killing off major characters more frequently. And not just people no one liked. Gives the show a real sense of danger. But IMO the show as a whole has run its course as with the entire zombie fad. You got nerf guns and shit now, its just fucking silly.
I cannot think of a less scary video game baddie than a shambling husk of flesh. Its not even compelling.

Wieland Yeah, this is a BR-specific problem. BR is not the “MMO” part of H1Z1. That part basically just stagnates and gets wiped every few months.

agemyth

SallyBowls1 The mode they are talking about that being a problem is not even really an open world pvp game. It is a single-life deathmatch round where the last man standing gets a bag of goodies.

Armsbend At launch, H1Z1 was the most consistently stable and basically playable of the big DayZ-likes. I was very impressed with it at that time. Today, it is nearly the same exact experience as it was then. And then it wipes frequently, which I would be ok with. Rust server wipe often with patches and stuff because it improves performance and the new features change the way people might build/play.
H1Z1 wipes have brought nothing notable for the Survival game.

Look forward to the wipe.  Glad they are finally doing something about teamers.  Nothing more annoying than surviving a solo BR or Zombie BR, just to get run up on by 3 guys working together.  Hopefully this will help but WE’RE STILL WAITING ON THE HUGE SURVIVAL PATCH THAT WAS SLATED FOR THIS MONTH……..   WHERE IS IT?!?!?!?
