Lord of the Rings Online’s next update will allow you to level to 95 instantly

It’s indisputable that there is a lot of content in Lord of the Rings Online. There’s a huge pile of zones and quests for everyone to undertake, regardless of level. So why not skip all of it with a quick level 95 boost to get you into the highest-level content immediately? The next major update to the game is adding just that.

While skipping everything in the lower levels isn’t for everyone, the idea makes sense when you’re leveling yet another alt. Or maybe you just hate leveling; we’re not here to judge. You can see a quick video of using the Blessing of the Valar just below; don’t worry, your character will have appropriate gear and mounts waiting at the other side of the boost tunnel.

I picked the cheaper version for characters over 50, used it, finally I would have a chance to see Gondor. We’ll see if I actually manage to make it very far.

I’m tempted by this. I know that LoTRO is a quality title, I know that it’s about the journey and not the destination and I appreciate that some might feel that this devalues the game. But I see it as an opportunity to travel the highways and byways of Middle Earth largely unmolested. I don’t have any interest in end game whatsoever. I just want to explore those parts of Turbine’s Middle Earth that I never saw – Moria, Lorien, Rohan, Fangorn, Gondor – without having to worry about aggroing every mob in the zone or levelling up my old SoA characters for weeks on end.

wanderv15 Feodor Mohrea Stop it. Feodor is correct, you need to not do “this here”. This is a place where we discuss mmo-rpgs, the good and the bad. He’s not lying, stop being a blind fanboy.

Mohrea Feodor               I feel just the opposite. Start to Mirkwood was fun, interesting and moved me. After that it started to become tedious in look and feel and the mounted combat system made the legendary item system mechanics look good in comparison.

For me the best part of LoTRO was the whole game to the end of Moria. I did enjoy Lothlorien as well. After that though I found it tedious and the same with a very tiresome mounted system. I’ve never been a fan of the Legendary Item mechanics system but I’d rather deal with it than the mounted mechanics system.

So for me the this might be a boon. I tend to peter out at the end of Moria, so that’s talking level 50-60-ish. After that I’d buy the boost to experience the class mechanics since that’s another thing I love to play around with. I’ve done the content up to 100th with my Champion, so honestly and quit bluntly I’d rather not deal with that boring mounted content again.

The big deal? The developer just said their content from 1-95 is useless filler.

I haven’t really touched the game much since the first few months after launch. I’ve thought about coming back, but i’m concerned about the low level population. I don’t want to start over and be the only person in zones because everyone else is sitting in high-end zones. Killed FFXI the last few times I tried going back to it.

MatthewYetter Robert80 Armsbend Corvus Monedula  Ah, they updated the dungeon runs to include that?  Because last time I played, that was where I ended up looking at trying to get a group for the old dungeons and just left it alone.

I have a level 90 boost sitting unused on my WoW account.  I *like* leveling alts!  *Sigh*, I wish they’d let me auction the damn thing off.

GabeNewellFetish This will be the first time I am likely to actually purchase one of these. I have gotten boosts in WoW and SWTOR thanks to ordering an expansion, but LotRO is a game I have played since launch inconsistently, and while I have leveled several characters into the 60s, (Back when that was the cap) I have often regretted that I’ll have no time or desire to grind up to the cap to see all the new stuff they have added.

With this I might actually have a reason to go back and finally see Gondor.

Higgens Seems to be so now. Unlike before Warner Bros bought it from Turbine. Hmm or did WB buyout Turbine? Either way welcome to big greedy corporations.

GabeNewellFetish Good question. One answer might be most mmo companies have brainwashed ppl into believing the really good content is at the so called “end game”. Which doesn’t make sense to call it that because everyone would quit playing and companies would make no more money.:P

I will never understand why people will always, without fail, throw a tantrum over optional content that doesn’t affect them in any way.

It’s not like most people don’t already power level through MMOs without bothering to learn how to play it. So what’s the big deal?

That was changed a long time ago.  Only a few Epic Story quests require a group anymore and those that do give you a buff when you’re in the quest area that turns you into a god.  Unless all of that changes after level 70 (the farthest I’ve yet gotten), you can complete the entire Epic Story without ever grouping.  In fact, that’s what I’ve done with my current character, with no issue.

Loopstah Yeah, this doesn’t really impact on anyone else. It’s very expensive so any worries about max level being full of people who don’t know how to play are exaggerated quite a bit. I think very few will buy it and if it makes those that do happy, so what. Some people have huge problems with games and will just spread their misery to those that enjoy it, I guess.

teppic

Gibs Unfortunately. It’s more than a bit inconsistent because everything past the last expansion (i.e. all new content onwards) is covered by VIP, but the older stuff isn’t. I wish they’d fix that and just include all content in VIP like other games do.

Gibs

do you still have to buy all those expansions to enjoy the full game?

DamnDirtyApe I have a lvl 45 loremaster that I tried to jump back into and had the same problem. I forgot just how many different spells they have and I was immediately overwhelmed when I saw my four action bars packed with spells that I had no idea what they did or why I organized them the way that I did. And then I saw all my crafting crap and just gave up lol.

Leveling in this game is the best part, I really can’t see new people using this….. Maybe someone with tons of alts that’s sick of the leveling but otherwise your just screwing yourself because the stories and lore are the best part of this game I mean it’s LOTRO for Christ sake……..

6000 Turbine Points. That’s a lot of Wolves to kill. The levelling in LOTRO is slow as Molasses even as a VIP but honestly paying for an instant level 95 is not for me theres something to say about the work it takes to put into levelling a character.

I certainly won’t use this on my main who is lvl 83 and going through the main story.
I won’t use it on my bard alt cause I am looking forward to getting him to moria and experiencing all that fun again.
So…I think I will use it on my 3rd alt. Ya I think I will. =]

Fine as an option, but really quite dumb in practice.  If anyone asked me, I’d strongly discourage it for their first toon.

IMO there are few other titles where the journey is really so much the main point of the game as LOTRO.

Not to mention that leveling is neither hard, nor slow, and is a good way to learn a really baffling number of processes, abilities, currencies, systems, etc that have been bolted on in what, 17 expansions?

I can see how it would be nice for those who’ve already played the content and just need another toon at max lvl for their group composition.  Even then, the classes play quite differently, I’d MUCH rather have a minstrel that’s earned his/her stripes on the leveling ladder than someone who doesn’t even know the class.

Loopstah

I’m ok with this. It’s an option – nobody NEEDS to do this.
If you’re the type of gamer who likes to play only at max level – this is for you.
If you’re the type of gamer who has a gajilion alts and simply does not with to go through yet another iteration of 100 levels (!!)  – this is for you.
If you’re just starting off and have not gone through the content, or simply enjoy levelling as opposed to max level – i seriously advise against it.
It’s all about the choice, i just don’t see why people get all up in arms over choice.

CastagereShaikura Maybe. There’s just something about going through the noob experience with a class that bonds you to it though.

Karl_Hungus

Since this game has no real end-game content, and hasn’t for years, you’re essentially paying money to skip past the only content this game has just so you can have another max level character you don’t play. Genius.

CastagereShaikura
Guest
CastagereShaikura

Snky I agree, I wouldn’t want to skip the content in this game. I can see someone doing it if they have a few max level characters already though.

Robert80 MatthewYetter Armsbend Corvus Monedula that sounds like a case for doing this; grab level 95, and you can solo that stuff and progress in the story despite low population.

Robert80
Guest
Robert80

MatthewYetter Armsbend Corvus Monedula  The only problem is that running solo it is hard to do much of the story content, as it was designed for groups, unless you really do out-level it.  I see that as the one thing which really detracts from the epic story in many cases (They do have solo versions for much of it, but not all, and people will get stuck… and thus frustrated, along the way.  It is solid stuff, no doubt, but there’s only so much asking for a group for X slightly older content one can stand!)

Robert80
Guest
Robert80

Corvus Monedula CloakingDonkey MatthewYetter Armsbend  Without world events of spending money…  Well, if you grind the starting zones for TP you get a little over a hundred each time, and if you do so solo it takes ~2 hours.  So, 60X2 hours, 120 hours of grinding.
*This was frequently done by some free players back in the day in groups, which does make it go a little faster.*

Robert80
Guest
Robert80

Corvus Monedula Craywulf teppic Yeah, you’d be far better off getting zone unlocks than buying this, if that is your goal (because those unlocks unlock the story!)

It makes sense, as far as money’s concerned.
Sell $60 solutions to a problem that you created yourself. Much better than remaking obsolete and terrible content.

Man, they only need race and gender locked classes every six months, and it’s a grand Korean bingo.
