Elite: Dangerous’ Horizons goes live today

Elite: Dangerous’ Horizons – specifically, the 1.5 ships update – is set for launch today. Horizons is considered the next season for the game’s original version, which launched a year ago. That makes today’s launch, Planetary Landings, the first expansion of this second season. Got all that? Good.

Frontier’s devs are busily streaming in honor of the launch, and David Braben submitted himself to the whims of a Reddit AMA early this morning, confirming galaxy map bookmarks for 2.2, a community site revamp to better connect players seeking groups, Powerplay improvements, and more.

You can purchase the base game plus Horizons bundled for $59.99 US on the official site. Check out the launch trailer below.

JonBuck FunkyCold i like it this way,  I highly recommend changing your key binds to be w Up, S down, A left, D right, Q roll left, E roll right. Change mouse to only be pitch and yaw. That has worked for me tremendously. this way its more like a controller, left hand is going up down left right and rolling in space. your mouse is the aimer going up and down side to side.

DasBenty honestly after manually docking about 20 times it becomes second nature.. if your are using a keyboard and mouse as a newbie to play. I highly recommend changing your key binds to be w Up, S down, A left, D right, Q roll left, E roll right. Change mouse to only be pitch and yaw. That has worked for me tremendously.

GabeNewellFetish Hang on. If you backed it on kickstarter, what level did you back at? If you backed it at premium Beta level you get it for free, Beta and below, you can still play Elite: Dangerous but not Horizons. The game won’t stop for you if you don’t get the buy the latest version.

Horizons is not going to be just planetary landings, there’s Avatars, Crafting, Multi-crew ships, remote control fighters, on-planartary Mining an Powerplay overhaul and a background plot ongoing. So far IMHO, Frontier have managed to deliver on most of their promises, (They wobbled a bit on Powerplay I think but the rest has come good), so I think it good value and adds much more to the game.

Normally, if they issue a “we have updated the game” message. Wipe whatever, you’ve installed and download the latest installer from the Frontier Store. It sounds as if you have managed to create a pilot yet so you won’t be loosing anything. Any problems, reply to this thread and I’ll see what I can do to help.

I haven’t played Elite yet, but I did back it on Kickstarter. I am utterly confused.

So… if I buy Horizons, I can get it plus the base game I already have for $60?

Or… if I already have the game, I can buy Horizons for $45? Are you kidding me?!

I’m about to install the game again and, frankly, I almost hope it still is broken (every time I’ve tried to play it before, it would just give me a black screen and a messed-up looking launch window and their tech support would ignore my service request for weeks and only eventually respond with a “we have since updated the game, so please try again” and then closing the request before I could respond.)

theeknighthood This is a general occurrence, and I also find it annoying. You can be within seconds of reaching a station and get pulled back quite a long way from it again. It’s not the lost time, as we are talking just seconds, it’s the feeling that it’s a networking failure rather than something that should happen.

I must say I have enjoyed landing on a few planets so far, makes the game feel a lot bigger.
One issue I have which destroyed immersion a bit, was I was very close to a planet at one point, and I got interdicted, so I figured sweet Ill drop throttle and submit and have some awesome near planet combat.
Nope, it teleported me and the target to 0.1LS away, blew away the enemy and then had to start flying back again… wtf

TheChiefTurtle What in the trailer do you think you can’t do?

Clearly I don’t expect you to reply to this question as you’re just here to troll.

Yeah, me too. That’d mean (at least) 4K resolution with all settings On / High.  The graphics cards arriving next summer will be able to do that.  4K monitors are a little behind but should be obtainable for all in a couple of years.

Vikingr Did you see that the video team said about that video. All rendered by using in-game footage at their highest setting. I would love to have a machine that could run that!

TheChiefTurtle I’ll have to contradict you there. According to the frontier development launch stream; the latest video all in-game footage as captured by the production team. Elite Dangerous Engine already supports 4K resolution and using their internal debug cameras they able to capture the footage and then edit it to best effect.

Think they learnt’ their lesson from the last one.

Well. It is a new release. You look at the version numbers, it’s 2.0. That also includes Horizons as it is and further enhancements this year such as  Multicrew ships and Avatars, which are coming later in the year. There’s just as much new content added in v2.0 than E:D 1.0.

I kind of thing of it kind of like a yearly sub of £40 or $60 instead of $10 a month for some games. It might have been better if they released each of those upgrades individually for about $15 dollars each but even then I don’t think we have to worry about you joining in but I feel sorry that your going to miss out.

Another not actual gameplay trailer showing not actual things you can´t actually do in this game.

And the lifetime pass owners push people into buying this overpriced DLC,lol.
They even put it into a separate game, borderline scam imho

That sounds very interesting! Just think if you could find a lost colony, where people have survived but not being able to communicate, and then you give them updated communication and other stuff so they can call home! :D

GoJammit intruderEllite Ironwu Yep it’s Manzes. The troll twin, separated from his troll twin brother LordOfBread at birth.

It is destiny that these two shall meet again and fight across the ED and SC article sections.

You’re welcome. However there is one major aspect of this season that I completely overlooked and given your interest in exploration really should have been included.
GalNet is the news source for pilots in the game, giving various snippets about things large and small happening in the galaxy, a recent update tells us of “The Missing” which by all accounts will be a major part of things to come, the article can be read here – https://community.elitedangerous.com/galnet/uid/565c25129657bac051303c3f and some more info here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=209834&p=3228483&viewfull=1#post3228483

Ironwu I would not be so concerned with that. When Star Citizen launches with the features Elite patched in over two charged expansions, the gap will be less significant. Also, I don’t really feel like it needs to be a foot race. SC comes out and the two games will have different main audiences. yes there will be some blending, but they will be involved enough that  most people will gravitate to one and stick there.

Perhaps Star Citizen isn’t your kind of game then. Because really it wouldn’t be Star Citizen without the high goals, and that’s what attracts me. If it was just like Elite: Dangerous I wouldn’t had any reason to wait for Star Citizen since I already have ED. Thankfully they’re very different.

A comparison of a released game and a game in alpha development isn’t really serious. To be fair you should at least compare Star Citizen alpha with an early alpha of Elite: Dangerous. But even then you’d compare apples and oranges because they’re totally different games.

FunkyCold I’ve set it up like this:
A & D: Left and right roll
Q & E: Left and right horizontal thrust.
R & F: Vertical thrust.
W & S remain throttle.
Mouse for pitch and yaw control. You need the vertical and horizontal thrusters for fine control on landing. There are landing computers in this game, but learning to do it manually is much faster. I don’t have space for a HOTAS, so keyboard and mouse it is.

JonBuck FunkyCold Hurbster OK cool, good to know. I doubt I would ever buy a joystick / hotas

FunkyCold Hurbster It takes a bit to get comfortable with the controls. I’ve got a mouse and keyboard setup that works well for me. I’ve also added VoiceAttack so I can do things like engage drives, deploy landing gear, etc, without taking my hands off the controls.

lapo chriskovo Ironwu Tried 3 different stations for missions and they were all mining or courier missions to places i could not plot too.   IM sorry but first few missions should all be about getting you some quick cash.   The developers arent doing the right thing and helping you along in the beginning.   Make the later game stuff  harder thats fine but they should get you started good too.

Serrenity rogerstim37 Bit hard to enjoy an mmo that is not released yet though don’t you think ? From what I understand the alpha content is still quite limited and buggy and although some people enjoy seeing the progress of a development of an mmo I am afraid I prefer the finished product .

chriskovo Ironwu If you want credits fast when you start and you are not too skilled yet try playing tag the pirate when they are fighting the cops. If you land a single shot you will get the full bounty once the authority ships kill them. Resource sites (mining spots in planetary rings) are good for this and regular bounty hunting (which I did when I was new and had no trouble dealing with most small NPC ships)
And there are plenty of missions available at the BBS, no idea why you are saying that there are none. Sure most missions will be for higher ranked players but there is always a harmless courier run or two.

Hurbster http://www.dabs.com/products/thrustmaster-t-flight-hotas-x-pc-2960703-85J0.htm – about £40 Quid and if you get voice attack as well, that covers all the bases.

Ironwu I don’t think so . By the time SC comes out Elite Dangerous probably will have 3-5 expansions under its belt .

Very feasible, I’m an old fart and hold my own quite well. Some of the combat can be twitchy, moreso now with the opportunity to take on multiple AI opponents who are flying in a group (wing) and especially the higher ranked AI. So it’s mainly picking your targets to suit, the UI will inform you if your target is part of a wing, their difficulty level etc.
Docking might seem like it can be difficult but it’s surprising easy and intuitive once you get the procedure down, for larger ships you could always use a Docking Computer module that automates the process (this is not fool-proof though).
The Horizons expansion is building on exploration, the further you are from Sol, the higher the payout and planetary based exploration is now a thing as well, though I haven’t tried it myself. There are occassional community goals that reward exploration and there is a powerplay character who offers a substantial bonus to exploration data.

Trading is surprisingly seductive, it’s very peaceful going from station to station, watching the money roll in with very little effort if you find yourself a good route and have a ship with decent cargo capacity, Again there are lots of Community Goals that involve trading, these offer nice rewards for various levels of participation. if a bit more direction is your thing then missions can give you objectives, ie long distance trading or smuggling missions etc
It’s definitely a slow burner, don’t expect action at 100 miles per hour from the outset, and it’s well worth taking the time to get familiar with the basics before diving in too deeply although it does look more complex than it actually is.

JonBuck Wasn’t the Earth’s moon locked by permits during beta. Does anybody know if we can land on the moon with live? Otherwise, it would be pretty ironic to use the JFK speech.
I’m downloading now, and if we can, that’ll be the first place I head.

Two questions for some kind Experts:

1) How feasible is this to play OK (say 30 percentile of skill level) for an old & incompetent network/person?  How Twitchie? Can I get a dock with rubber bumpers? How close can you get this to space game from space sim?

2) I am looking for more exploration and trading. I have read comments that ED may be a better fit than the upcoming other space sim. Thoughts?

My X52 decided not to play well with my computer the other day, which gave me a mini heart-attack as i just pre-ordered Horizons that day. Luckily i was able to fix the problem (drivers) and am now eagerly awaiting for some free time to fire it up!

My only problem is that I bought this game on sale and don’t want to pay more for the expansion than I did for the game. Back to the wishlist you go until the next sale.

Ironwu Two games of the same genre, but different in aspects of game play, features and requirements.  I think both will be incredible(I play both now) when they are more feature complete and a bit more polished and I personally love that the games don’t play the same. :)
