See what it’s like landing on a planet in Elite: Dangerous with Google Cardboard

People have the time to start playing around with their holiday gifts now, but what’s the best use of those gifts? More apropos, is it worth getting your new little Google Cardboard stuff all set up and ready to land on planets in Elite: Dangerous? What does that even look like? Wonder no more; there’s a video just beneath the cut from PhoenixDfire with video documentation of what that looks like.

The video description on YouTube contains full information about the equipment and software used for anyone curious. Even if you’re not curious about the setup, you can sit back and relax as a ship slowly reaches the surface of a planet in stereo vision.

melissaheather I can’t wait for the VR of 2018-2020. You can test this 2015-2017 version :)

I actually got a Colorcross headset a while back. It’s a great way to see how VR works if you don’t have access to the “real thing.” I also used Trinius VR, but it seemed kinda janky. The video is showing it working better than I had it working. I might try it out again soon.

Sorta thinking about saving my pennies and getting the Occulus or Vive. Elite is a really great show piece for VR in general since they developed it from the start with VR in mind. Very immersive.

pid melissaheather yes, “clouds over sidra” (in the VRSE app) may be the most impressive film-based VR thing I’ve seen yet.

BalsBigBrother pid I always think it a little odd when i hear an English accent in space?

PhoenixDfire pid Thanks for making this, I’ll be playing with my new cardboard-inspired headset this weekend and this looks like a perfect thing to try!
Plus, I think Scottish accents are sexy, so that’s a bonus….  <.<

shadowblender Is this a case of Poe’s Law, or do you really not understand the whole “Google cardboard” thing?

pid It’s a bit hard not to take offence when you state ‘alcoholic smoker in a smog ridden town tries to force on me.’ There is no way that can be considered sarcasm,

Anyway person insults aside, It all depends when you stopped playing E:D. If you stopped after a couple of months, then you missed out on the community Goals and wings update (powerplay was a bit duff IMO), which added so much more to the game. They’ve overhauled the missions system, and the USS and the background Galaxy simulation. The main problem that I think everyone has is they just do trading and stay away from bounty hunting around nav points or in asteriod fields, smuggling goods (which is very profitable) when it works, piracy pays in you know where to hunt and they even improved mining.

However, if your’re a beta Backer and Not a premium Backer, it you missed out on the livetime pass which means you’ll miss out on horizons but the 1.5 version of Elite:Dangerous , which you’ll still have access to’, is a vast improvement over what was launched in December last year.

Thank you for tour polite response. I don’t know you so don’t take it personally. I was not refering to the accent or else. Just the low voice. Your explanation is enough to urge my apologies. I had no intention ti offend, I just wanted to be sarcastic for the funny voice.
I adore Scotland and nave all respect for scottish people. Especially the estreme North, skara brae and such were very pleasant to visit.
The colorcross is an interesting piece of equipment.
About the game… I’m a KS backer. My opinion is based on comparison to Elite, Frontier and playing E:D since beta. From a modern pov it didn’t hold up to expectations. I got bored very quickly, and that’s just my opinion.
So, please, don’t be offended by my sarcasm and keep up the good streaming on YouTube!

shadowblender If you had the cardboard, you would be able to stream the vidoe into the headset and it would make a lot more sense. The idea is for people who’ve got Cardboard to set it up and watch it through.

pid Thank you for you kind comments about my voice and insinuating that I have a Smoking and Alcohol problem. I guess that’s what all Scottish people must sound like to you (there are quite a few English people who would agree). I have to talk quietly so not to wake the family up as this is recorded late night. Next time I’ll record at full volume but I don’t know if you’ll be able to understand my proper Scottish Shrek like voice ;-)

As I mentioned in the video, I use the Colorcross headset, a light plastic headset which is about £15 or $20. You can get head straps for about a £1 ($1.50) for the cardboard which make it a lot more comfortable. You don’t have to go full out GIMP and wrap you head in elastic tape just keep the headset on, that would get you all hot. and sweaty.

You don’t like the game, fine. That’s your opinion but as far as forcing things the game on you, I’m wouldn’t dream of it. I’m just showing that there is an alternative for less than £25 ($30) which should  give you a taste of VR without having to pay out for a full Oculus Rift or Vive.

Damonvile BalsBigBrother pid And even us Americans don’t all speak the same way.In the deep south where I’m from, people have a very distinctive accent not found anywhere else in America. If I drive two hours away to Louisiana, I’ll hear a very different cajun accent.

Wispering? I think not! Wispering is different. This is an in-house voice. People which talk loud all the time, like they’re in a storm or at a rock concert, are extremely annoying.

Damonvile BalsBigBrother pid Actually it’s not about the accent. I’m not american, so… What I meant is that he’s whispering, he’s not really talking with his normal voice. That’s a pretty wide spread habit and it never sounds good. It’s like you don’t want to talk louder because someone might hear you.

BalsBigBrother pid I don’t get that part of his comment. The guy has a totally normal voice with an Irish accent.   I assume “talk like everyone else” means have an American accent.

pid Wait … we are all supposed to talk the same way? Damn those regional and national acents must purely be something my imagination made up or something.

I love cardboard for what it is.. an introduction into modern VR for very cheap price, where you bring your own device.   Dozens if not hundreds of apps available, and some of them astonishing.   GearVR is a leap ahead of that.  Can’t wait for Vive and Rift and PS VR.
But not all cardboard apps are great.  There is a “cardboard camera” app that doesn’t take real full-bubble VR pictures at all, just panoramas and formats them for cardboard viewing.  meh.
You want to check out the JAUNT apps if you want really sweet VR experiences that are film-based, not CGI.

The game is generally dull (and I was a huge Elite fan in the ’80). The Carboard is very uncomfortable to wear, especially with the elastic wrap. It gets sweaty and out of focus very very easily and cuts into the skin, so NO WAY I’d play with one for more than 30 minutes. I don’t get why the guy in the video talks so strange like he’s in a smog ridden town or a hardcore smoker. Can’t he talk like everyone else?
So… no, not my thing playing a 90% black pixel game with dull gameplay on an uncomfortable Cardboard that an alcoholic smoker in a smog ridden town tries to force on me.
I pass, thank you.

shadowblender It’s two because with the cardboard it’s one stereoscopic image. without that tool you see both images side-by-side.

I dislike the twin look. Wish it was only one screen, not 2 with the same thing.
