Esoteric Coyote Crohn’s is brutal, our parents’ pastor has it and he’s struggled for years. Truly hope he’s doing better this week and that the finances don’t swamp you.

I spent new years trying to stay awake to watch the ball drop with my husband who was in the hospital.  I managed to stay awake but he fell asleep in the last 60 seconds. Can’t blame him, he was on so many narcotics it would make a junkie cry.  We are home now, but he’s still not out of the woods. It’s a struggle to even get a cup of soup in him.  His insides are a disaster apparently, yay stage four Crohn’s.  And the medication he needs, after we finally get control of this situation, is only 3000 dollars a month…fingers crossed the insurance company doesn’t ditch us.  Rough way to start a new year, but pretty sure it can only go up from here.

Thanks for answering the WoW question. Even though I didn’t ask it myself, I could have. I haven’t found a game yet to replace WoW. I really want one game to be my main focus (like what Justin is trying with FF) instead of dabbling around in a bunch of games that don’t really do it for me. Current WoW doesn’t do it for me either. Last time I tried to pick it up again and it was a disaster, so I said Never Again. I guess I’ll just keep trying things.

Syppi Enikuo I’d be sad too if I didn’t have friends to play games with and couldn’t get paid. But, I get paid regularly, so I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.

breetoplay Vexia Fair enough. Things weren’t all sunshine and rainbows in the world of Ultima Online. I mean, your head collection had to come from somewhere, right? :P But the fact that you have collected so many stories from your time spent playing games like UO and SWG is what interests me about them, I suppose. Whereas those games set up an environment ripe for making your own stories, I don’t think a lot of recent MMOs have really given that dimension much thought. Also, I do think I’m looking forward to some of those possible replacement games in the near future as well.
(P.S. You guys should formally have a segment on the podcast called “Bree’s UO/SWG Story Time”)

Zulika_Mi_Nam Winterskorn Some of the really really old computer games have great manuals. I think Tie Fighter is one of those whose method of DRM was symbols printed next to the page number on the manual.

Siphaed Ah yeah, that was from the week before Xmas, so it didn’t make it into this show (which was mostly about last week). We’ll probably bring it back up next time we have recent CU news! :D

Watched it.
Did not enjoy it.
The hosts were very interruptive to their guest as well as the continued need of them to go off-topic and away from what was asked to ask (i.e. Crafting Questions).   I was really waiting for Mark to interject with a “I won’t answer those questions, please Crafting only questions.” or simply “If I can get a word in edgewise…”.   The patience he must have had.  I can completely understand that their very fanatic fans who are giddy to be talking to Mark and want to squeeze out as much info as possible.  But sheesh, it was just way too chaotic and unprofessional as a stream goes.

Talk about the new year and all these MMO’s, yet no mention of CU at all?  Even after bree’s interview and semi-hype for the crafting reveal from December 23rd?  Really? What a bummer.

Omedon Same, good luck Jef!  His stuff was always a good read.

Every time, I eat at one of the icons of lunch around UM I will think of Jef.  Ya I know he only lived there and did not go to school there, but I liked to jab at him like he did.

schlag sweetleaf  He was my favorite writer on MassivelyOp, I’ll miss his point of view on mmorpgs, since he and I frequently saw eye to eye on a lot of it.

breetoplay ManastuUtakata Omedon I wondered, he did do some of the remarks in the various articles you did during December on “Best of” “Worst of” but he hadn’t done any articles of his own all month. :(

Winterskorn I read the user manuals to now defunct MMOs from time to time.  They bring back good memories.

Thank you Bree! I thought there was a horrid falling out…I am so glad this is not the case. My extreme apologies for even thinking this. /dogeza

Vexia I also don’t get to regale people with stories about getting ganked, about the guild drama and betrayals, about having my guild castle stolen, about all the bad stuff, about the first two months of constant disconnections and lag, about the land scarcities, about what Trammel did to the game — all that might temper your enthusiasm! :D
SWG did a brilliant job of recapturing (and improving on) UO’s magic, and there have been some other greats along the way, CoH and GW1 in my estimation. I think we have some good possible replacements on the horizon. ;)

ManastuUtakata Omedon No grand conspiracy; he’s moved on from the site by choice, and we’re still working out how best to fill his large shoes. :)

I enjoyed hearing your opinions on the last mailbag question, particularly. Lots of games have tried to be WoW, but only WoW can be WoW; therefore, I hope other games start to differentiate themselves more in the coming years. But that basically still means that if you want WoW, that’s the only game where you’re going to get that exact experience. I think it might be a good idea to approach WoW-like games with an open mind and remember the things you like and dislike about them for future reference.
Also sometimes when you start a new game after having exclusively played another one for so long, your eyes are trained to look at certain things and your fingers are trained to certain keys or mouse movements that no longer apply. When I played the GW2 beta, I got really confused and frustrated for this reason… trying to kill that damn house boss.
I was struck by the idea that now might be a good time to go back and look at games that have launched a few years ago to see what they’ve matured into, as well. My only problem with this consideration is that the ridiculous amount of MMO launches over the past few years would be overwhelming to comb through. I haven’t necessarily been keeping track of who’s added what features in great detail, and I’m sure more than a few games have fallen off my radar.
This will probably relate back to my first paragraph, but, Bree, you always make the old school UO experience sound like it would be so much fun whenever you talk/write about it (what with your head collection, lol!). I take it that MMOs have yet to recapture that magic, otherwise you’d probably be playing it, but that is the kind of game I would be really interested in.

Omedon
Sean Shuster slipped out into the night without announcing his departure under Massively-that-was. I pretty sure that was that was under his own volition. Perhaps it’s the same with Jef. He doesn’t like making his final farewells public. That’s what I am hoping is at least the case.

If he’s gone *not* of his own volition, that isn’t a good thing, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he looked in he mirror one day and decided that the present state of the “MMO genre” isn’t for him.
But yeah, I’m now officially with you in the curiosity train.

I’d also noticed his absence recently, but didn’t say anything because I’d assumed he was doing backend stuff. Not to mention, I’ve been on a bit of a positivity crusade, and with all due respect, one can’t really do that and cry for more of Jef’s writing presence.

Since I’m on a roll of asking risky questions today: What happened to Jef? :(
(I can understand if no one wants to answer that. My apologies in advance if this is deemed inappropriate though. :( )
