Guild Wars 2 winter 2016 update, gliding confirmed for Central Tyria

As part of Game Director Colin Johanson‘s Q1 state of play update, ArenaNet has confirmed that gliding is coming to the Guild Wars 2 zones that we know as Central Tyria after being warmly received as part of the Heart of Thorns zone-specific mastery system last October. Switched-on, eagle-eyed fans had already guessed that Central Tyria gliding was on the cards after a little teaser clip was shown during a recent livestream, but those whispers have now been solidly confirmed as a part of the 2016 Winter update additions coming on January 26.

Central Tyria gliding was far from the only news to come out of the state of play update: 2016 is set to be the year of balance and depth, promises Johanson, with regular seasonal game updates with “a focus on new content and polish for our existing, successful parts of the game.” In two weeks, we’ll see the first of these seasonal updates that will bring gliding to Central Tyria, improvements to the Shatterer boss fight including a new achievement category, a new PvP Mist Champion, quality-of-life improvements for fractals, better event recognition for healer and support builds, new marker and promotion tools for the squad UI, and much more.

The first quarter of 2016’s development timeline doesn’t end with the Winter 2016 update; the Lunar New Year event starts with the update and ends on February 9th. The next raid wing, called Salvation Pass, will allow raiders to continue the hunt for the missing Pact squad. The new PvP League season kicks off on February 23rd. And $200,000 is up for grabs next month in the Pro League Season One Championship. Johanson left us with a teaser plan for the rest of the year, mentioning Living World Season 3, fractals improvements that even includes new fractals (yippee!), and the big WvW overhaul we’re waiting on. Whew, what a year it’s set to be! Read the full details on the official website.

DugFromTheEarth Tina Lauro MassivelyMacD I absolutely, 100%, agree with you on the possibly over looked and strange “reentry barrier” for GW2; you would no doubt be lost in this game after a 6 month hiatus.  I took a 2-3 month hiatus to come back and feel that I just couldn’t get my bearings in the game.  It is a hindering feeling of being overwhelmed by numerous insurmountable goals and objectives.  This is mainly due to GW2 being based on substance-less never ending farming and grinding.  Instead of the cash shop tying into the story, I feel like the story is but a thread connecting one new cash shop release to the next.  This is my humble opinion, of course.

Like missing what?
The last missable living story was 22 months ago.
If you don’t want a changing world, may as well forget MMOs. Or not, since now that’s all they are, instanced set pieces for the solo player that don’t want to speak to anyone I guess…

squidgod2000 No you are not the only one squidgod I HATE them as well.
This is the death knell for me and GW2. I need a new computer to play in the new zones because of the vertically. (I am running a 6+ year old MAC) If I am going to get a decidaced gaming rig then I’ll break down and get a Windows machine instead of the MAC. When I do that I have a laundry list of other games I want to try; TSW, SWTOR, FFXIV, RIFT, & ESO off the top of my head.

MatthewRiddle Much of this was already completed. Many of the events were fine already and the worst (Chak Gerent) has already seen a nerf.

Superbrak Dystopiq Some of us still get groups together and run them and teach new players every once in a while. Keep an eye on the LFGs and/or start one yourself.

Siphaed Next up I want Forgal and Sieran! God I loved the Order mentors, all had great stories I wish were expanded upon more than they were.

Go to a custom daily server. Get all the tokens you need. I haven’t touched CoE explo paths but have the full set

DugFromTheEarth I with ya there. I took advantage of the economic upheaval to sell mats like crazy and buy the LS chapters I missed with gold.
If that weren’t an option, GW2 would have remained uninstalled.

nahenway Superbrak Quincha Dungeons are gone man… and even if they weren’t, they’re just longer Fractals. I agree Fractals are repetitive and we need more of them, but dungeons are/would be the same way after a while, repetitive.
I wont argue that Ascended armor isn’t a grind, but that tier of gear will not become obsolete. Ascended gear has been around for years with no sign of higher tiers on the horizon… and stats can be swapped pretty easily. The legendary armor from raids stat swaps for free on its own even.
Personally, I’d classify events as open world grind. The Halloween and Wintersday shoulder skins for example… or grinding bits for the SAB weapon skins. Not that the events still weren’t fun!
But hey… here’s hoping GW2 has something for ya, or if not, some other game does :)

yeah, fully reading my comment would have let you see that I covered your statement already in my post.

Its great though that missing storyline content is ok for you, and that WvW feels full fledged enough to keep 100% of your play time fun and entertaining.

MassivelyMacD I would be super interested in a “WvW post mortem” years from now exposing all the sordid details of the trials and tribulations behind this WvW revamp. All the ideas that didn’t work and why, the changing philosophies as developers left the company… some serious stuff had to have gone down for it to take THIS long.

I mean… you don’t like to repeat content. Sure.
But you want endlessly repeated content for… gear?

Remove the open world and instances, and you get solo questing, I guess. I can already see what you think about content that “you play once or twice” though.

But the story has nothing to do with WvW.
And the game had bugger all outside of the expansion last year.

How is that “one of those games that if you take a 6 month break, you fall WAY behind on pretty much everything story and content driven”?
It’s about the only one where you won’t get lose anything by not playing for years.

Tina Lauro DugFromTheEarth MassivelyMacD My feelings are a bit different.

IMO, GW2 has one of the biggest reentry barriers in the mmorpg industry. And it has nothing to do with subscription cost. GW2 is one of those games that if you take a 6 month break, you fall WAY behind on pretty much everything story and content driven. This is a HUGE barrier for myself (and many of my friends). Im a full year behind in the living story, and that is keeping me from even bothering to try the new expansion.

Sure, I could log in every couple of months to check to see how WvW is doing, but like I said… Anet has been touting “big changes” for WvW ever since release… After so many months (or years in this case), one simply stops caring and believing.

Superbrak nahenway Quincha Ddungeons for example or raids where i don’t have to farm a year for stupid gear which is worthless after the next balance patch. Or Events like SAB. It’s not like pve only consists of fracs, raids and open world grind.

DekuSnow nahenway melissaheather as Tina said yeah there are many walls near mountains and that stuff.

Tina Lauro

DekuSnow nahenway melissaheather  There are quite a few invisiwalls over mountains and the like that’ll need to be modified to allow for nice places to glide from. That being said, those walls aren’t so abundant that the experience will be spoiled, and as you say, they’ve had the Maguuma gliding success so we know it’s achievable.

DekuSnow

nahenway melissaheather The areas are divided into zones, but there’s hardly “hidden walls everywhere”.  The game is very open, aside from the boundaries that break up each zone and considering this is gliding and not flying, I don’t see it being a problem.  It works perfectly well in the expansion areas.

DugFromTheEarth Tina Lauro MassivelyMacD  I dunno… since there’s no sub cost,  I think there’s a low enough reentry barrier to those who would potentially jump back in when changes happen. Maybe that’ll go in its favour?

Tina Lauro MassivelyMacD fixing/improving WvW has been the same song and dance for Anet since the games release.

I think those who were ever hopeful, are long gone by now. Anyone who had high hopes for WvW to be a fleshed out end game option like Daoc, realizes that this is just a pipe dream now. Anet seems to be king of squandered opportunities.

MassivelyMacD  I don’t know if they could put a full year into working on it and not come up with some sort of sensible solution. I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt on that one.

I fear the WvW updates are too late and only vaguely formulated. This part of the game remains in serious trouble, sadly.

nahenway melissaheather  Lots of those invisiwalls will need to be broken or moved to facilitate the gliding in the first place though. I’ll wait and see!

Quincha nahenway Superbrak I’m not sure if i should be happy about that. Raids are just for a small group, fractals repeat like 300 times and ls is nice but no real content (you play them one or two times).

But i’ll be patient and see what happens

Tina Lauro Kalamari Xephyr This. If Anet can continue releasing content every couple of months in the meantime, they can afford to take their time with the next expansion. And it needs to really cook. If it comes out before winter 2017 I’ll be dubious of its content.

squidgod2000 when I read your quote, I don’t see anything negative about it. I see it happily as more exploration. Finding high points are now just as important as finding lateral destinations. Its an added depth to the game’s environment. Exploring to me is only a chore if I am going one direction all the time with auto-run.

This means a focus on new content and polish for our existing, successful parts of the game.

Sounds nice, but in their mind, this probably means expanding e-sports.

“Hey, look! The spot I need to go is only a couple hundred yards away…
…let me run all the way across the zone and spend half an hour trying to find the right path.”
I’ve got about 15% completion on the first HoT zone and haven’t even touched the others. Just got my hero points to unlock elite and never went back.

Yeah, it got pretty ridiculous. You’d tap a movement key and go flying off the side of a mountain.
IIRC, they made some change to the way movement worked around the time of Storm Legion and couldn’t fix/unchange the issue, so they took out fall damage.

Nyphur squidgod2000 Heh, reminds me of when i learned why rift had all the animations for fall damage but no damage. Apparently as they introduced faster and faster mounts, they hit a point where the smallest bump in the terrain would send characters “flying”…

squidgod2000 The only one that hates gliding? Yeah, I think you might be. Its awesome.
But I’m with you the super verticality of the new zones is probably one of my least favorite aspects of the new areas. But as I’ve gotten used to it it’s not so bad. I’ll grant it was a rather large hump to get over though.

squidgod2000 Funny story about deaths from falling damage compared to other sources. When EQ2 launched it had a website that kept track of almost everything in the game, including what monsters and abilities caused each player death. There was a list of the top killers in the game and though I recall falling/environmental damage being pretty high on the list, but the #1 killer in the whole game was actually “a chest” because chests could be trapped. I once triggered a stun trap on a chest underwater and drowned :D

Dystopiq Superbrak The gold was popular. The five or so quickest paths were packed. All dungeons did was foster a speed running gold farming all zerk or gtfo gogogogo community. Aetherpath is the very definition of wasted dev time and resources, it was never popular nor packed… and its objectively the best dungeon Anet ever added.
I do deeply wish Anet would have fixed dungeon content rather than burying them. I’ll never get to see the dungeon-side of the personal story again, and the dungeon skins might as well not exist anymore. Maybe someday…

Tina Lauro Xephyr I would prefer an expansion in 2017, so it would be at least as polished as HoT (which is an expansion I do love, even as a very casual player, because it actually incite me to go out of my way to finish exploration, etc.).
