melissaheather MatthewYetter karmamule Secoond Life is good when you get a good skin and shape combination going and the amount of stuff people have figured out how to replace with better things (hands, feet, lips, eyes, ears) with mesh variants or even full on mesh bodies and heads.) is quite interesting. I wonder if people realize just how far you can deviate into specific looks and how wildly they can differ.

As an example here is a friend of mine’s avatar. You can do a lot of crazy things in second life with your visual appearance. And sadly many people think it looks bad simply because they see newbies and assume that is what the entire thing is. There are fantastic builds, avatars and tons of other stuff in second life that can look visually stunning and then there is also utter crap, it is entirely up to the user what they grab or create and while second life could allow for some higher resolution textures (a limit at 1024×1024 is ehh) it can simply be done very very well.

karmamule MatthewYetter Eve’s character creator is probably the best overall and sadly it’s not used for much of anything.

After playing with it a bit…
+  Can make a character really small or fat if you want to.
+  Can make a character with skin hues that could pass for Indian or African.
+  Great selection of hair colors, and even multiple colors.
+  Great selection of long hairstyles on female toons.

–  All eye styles look Asian (perhaps that’s just my incompetence though)
–  Shortest hair you can give a female toon is a bob. No shaved heads. No mohawks, etc.

–  Nobody has curly or kinky hair (like nearly all Africans do).

–  Names don’t allow apostrophes or hypens (so crappy support for native names).
–  Female melee fighters all wear high heels (same as all other Asian devs, but seriously wtf?)
–  Horrible clipping issues with long hair. If you are going to force it on almost all female toons, at least clip it properly.

Holy crap, 6 gigs is a bit much just for a character creator.

Requires to you create a game account with them to use too. I highly suspect its actually a preliminary version of the game client. If they can get you to use this “character creator”, you’ll already have an account and most of the download when release day rolls around (or at least open beta).

So… it doesn’t take much to get your avatar looking good.  Here are two that didn’t take too long although I did spend some time on eyes.

First cap:  “Put the mouse down pal!  My breasts are just fine.”

Second cap:  No words necessary.

MatthewYetter karmamule see notes on Second Life above.   If resolution isn’t an issue, Star Trek Online actually has a good avatar creator.

MatthewYetter karmamule Yeah, Aion really did offer lots of choice.  I think I’d go with ESO as my favorite. Not as flexible as Aion in terms of body variations, but I like the facial choices more.  (Especially in terms of age flexibility)

I don’t mean for post below to be negative.  I’m just coming to grips with reality vs. expectations.   The avatars are amazing looking.  I will be able to make something I am totally happy with – I have no doubt of this.   SO glad Daum released this builder.  I’m pre-purchased, they deserve my money if only for being wise enough to release the avatar builder early.  Like Sam Adams beer, it’s always a good move.  :)

Since I always whine about avatars, and this one was supposed to be the best yet, here is my review.     It’s pretty good, but it’s nowhere near the best.   It is too blunt to create characters that really look like someone, or that look exactly the way you want.

I have to be honest and say I’m just a little bit bummed for the stupidest of reasons.   I was making the elf archer of my dreams, all was right with the world, until I discovered I cannot have brown eyes.   They can be reddish, grayish, but not brown.   They can be pink, purple, green, etc. out the wazoo, but they can’t be the eye color of 3 billion people on this planet.  Heavens no!

So, maybe that’s an elf thing.  I went to vape and contemplate this.  I went to the Jade Palace, and saw the Dragon Warrior.   Tonight, I shall attempt a brown-eyed Sorceress.

I think my chief impression is that the graphic quality is amazing, the textures and character models are just first-class compared to the crappy things MMOs usually give you.  Bravo.  It’s amazing.   But we’re sadly used to being thrown crumbs, that a steak of any cut seems like dreams of royalty.

I also can feel the pain of people who want to make a younger wizard character.   You can’t really make Harry Potter per se.  You’ll make a slightly younger looking old dude perhaps, but you’re picking a base avatar design when you choose a Class, and he looks like bloody Gandalf, and that’s going to be where you work from.

I’m as yet unskilled with the facial subtleties although I am a bit sad that there seems to be no nostril flare slider really.   I didn’t seem to have a bridge of the nose hump slider, which also is kind of important when you’re trying to make an avatar that looks the way you wish, or that looks like somebody.   Noses are really important, the eyes and nose really are the character of the face.   You can get by with generic eyes, but if the nose is wrong it won’t look like the person you wanted it to.

Is it the best?  Only in quality of graphics.  Tthere are other game avatar builders with many more sliders than this (Second Life).  I know I always bring that game up, so this morning I thought I’d put together a screencap of all the different ones, but it is too laborious.   Instead I have just listed them here.   Here are all the unique and individual sliders you get in Second Life, and you can of course edit your avatar any time you wish.

I don’t mean for this to be spam in this thread, I just want people to know how detailed an avatar creator can get, and how many sliders you have in SL for comparison’s sake.   You can even create your own skins in Photoshop, and upload them and use them on your avatar.  The templates are provided on the web site.
I would never have brought it up if they’d have let me have brown eyes…. weeping tears of dragon’s fire…  lol  ;)

GameTaco Greaterdivinity If elaborate open world play is your thing, Black Desert might still be for you. In my opinion, the PK just adds even more realism and excitement to it. It won’t be that common anyway. This is not ArcheAge, where people steal your stuff and then the worst that can happen to them is some afk time in prison. In BDO, the karma system and bounty hunter system that they’re discussing will make sure that frequent PKers are marked and get a big death penalty, whereas people who never PK don’t lose anything when they get killed.

Leilonii Yeah, but the weird thing is, the shine slider didn’t let me reduce the shine. It merely altered it. This screenshot may have been at minimum shine.

giant being berserker, and sorceress is more of an assassin with magic I found out (wasted my time making one, played a few levels, wondered why I was mostly attacking at melee, asked chat, and found out it is a mix class; apparently a KR sorcerer(ess) is not the same thing in Western minds).

As I have already stated, Daum knows through many Suggestion forum posts and other threads that people want to make their sex and looks their way without restrictions.

Bummer about the shine. Blade and Soul has the option to tone that up or down but in either case, it becomes less apparent when in the game world with all the environmental lighting (at least in B&S).
Can’t say I noticed when I played the JP Black Desert beta and I missed western beta1 due to life.

Sadly the anti cheat program the game comes with decided on my second day it didn’t like  something on my computer (yes that’s about as vague as the statement I got) so it wouldn’t allow me to launch the game.  I received zero support on this.  Apparently it will decide something as simple as razer synapse or other programs that come with a mouse are flagged as cheat programs and will not allow you to launch. I followed the directions given to find out what the issue is…and got no response at all.  This was at the time I was deciding as to whether to buy it prior to launch well it made my decision to not buy it and wait till they resolve this issue. As I pointed out on my post I’m not wasting hours trying to find out what YOUR program doesn’t like to play YOUR game.  Ugh I get testy just thinking about it :D

The game has never been about PVE-only so why do people complain about this? It is what it is.
The new bounty system they are thinking about may or may not be what PVPers want. I don’t know anything about the “original” flagging system people talk about and say “everybody” wants. I am not “everybody” since I have no idea what it is like.

I already addressed the wizard issue in another MassivelyOP BDO article. Mine looked like in his mid-late 50s, with brown hair, and scruffy week old brown beard. It isn’t the company’s fault people left their age old. Yes you still have lines around the eyes, etc, but the CBT1 forum suggestions all have noted that people want to create their looks their way, and so you too should wait for Daum to incorporate this.

All classes have a counterpart for gender so why do people keep complaining about it?

solaralune

karmamule That sounds like a challenge. How young do you mean by young?

MatthewYetter

I just came on to post pretty much exactly the same thing.  There are tons of options but most of them are locked away based on what your choice of class is.  All classes are locked to a single gender.  All classes provide a handful of preset faces that force you into a specific overall look.  Warrios are all young men.  Wizards are all old men.  You can do lots of things within that stereotype but you cannot deviate from it by any method.
I was already waffling about whether to be interested in this game but their character generator has actually killed it for me.
The best character creator out there for my money is still Aion.  Not that I play that game anymore either but with it you really could accomplish most anything you could imagine.

Greaterdivinity  I want to bandwagon aboard Team Black Desert so badly, but even a little bit of research into how both Korea and relatively recent NA/EU tests handle open world PvP/PK is steering me away so hard :(
It’s been a year or so since I last played a good old fashioned MMORPG with trading, fishing, gathering, crafting, heck, even housing. I notice the main site makes absolutely no mention of the PvP that opens up at level 50, nor that despite all the exploration, there is no endgame PvE and thus there is no intention of adding PvE-only servers. Oof. Even the forums already have the usual bit of “git gud” anti-carebear rhetoric I’ve managed to avoid for so long now.
So yeah, might as well just grab the character creator, which was the only real selling point this game had anyway :O

I hope game companies read these threads and see how much excitement there is for really deep avatar creation tools.    Korean game companies are really setting the standard for 2nd half of this decade.  Word.

Note: it’s possible to save the toon and publish the save file to share your model. And don’t forget to make blue-red hairs and differently colored eyes.

p.s. I hope the game will get normal installer at the moment of Western

EQ2 did this.  They included the creator DVD when you pre-ordered (in those days you did it at Gamestop or somewhere like that, not online so much).   I remember how much buzz it generated, and how it gave people something to do whilst waiting for launch.   Smart, smart, smart.
All this game needs for me, is to not be a gankfest and I expect to play it for a while.
