Overpower melds fantasy arena matches with RPG progression

Is your MMO a little on the slow side? Need a jolt of excitement and danger to go with your love of RPG progression? Then you might harken to the call of Overpower, a new fantasy shooter that’s currently running a Kickstarter campaign to raise $22,000.

Overpower describes itself as being inspired by MOBA combat, but really it’s more like fast-paced PvP arena matches with classes, gear, and leveling. It was made by a two-person studio, Hydrant Games, over the past couple of years and currently includes four classes and nine maps. The game has a colorful, cartoony style with classic RPG roles that are instantly identifiable (there are plans for many more as well).

Overpower is currently looking to get on Steam Greenlight so that it can start offering its beta to the community. If all goes well, Overpower will launch in May 2016. You can watch its trailer and get a taste of its combat after the jump.

Since the devs are afoot in here I’d like to make the case for full frontal nudity. Is it absolutely needed? No… but can’t fun things just be fun for funs sake?

The space being taken up by your favorite moba won’t crowded, it’s more of a shooter like Overwatch or Fury.
I don’t even have a decent arena shooter to play because Tribes sucks and Planetside 2 is too big for quik sessions.

Massively doesn’t have corporate masters anymore, they can cover dog shows if they wanted.

You should play archeage, I think you’ll love it.

No RPG style progression is the entire point to playing mobas for me. HOTS ftw. I get in, get rekt, get out.
20min tops.

Thanks for the reply and there is my first pledge to Kickstarter. $20 is more then fair for a copy of the game and I’m interested to see what you guys come up with.

Valkyriez Don’t worry, Aussie players will be taken care of. How about host your own server and have a zero ping? Anyone can create a dedicated server and set them up. We plan to host a few ourselves and set them up in several regions of the world. It won’t be like some MMOs where they are all in 1 city.

Valkyriez The network protocol works a lot like Quake/Unreal/CS/TF2, where anyone can house a server anywhere. There will be no centralized server farm all in 1 city. They will be spread out, so Aussie/oceanic people will be taken care of.

schmidtcapela The progression in Overpower happens outside of matches. You will unlock new weapons and abilities which won’t make you more powerful but give you access to new playstyles / meta.  Like most shooter games, CS, Quake, Unreal, you’re on a level playing field with everyone else at any given time regardless of time spent playing the game and Overpower is the same way! We’ll be releasing a single player demo to help promote the kickstarter in the upcoming days, I hope you stick around and check it out!

schmidtcapela I think differences of power between characters happen in pretty much every games, even first-person shooters. The only way I know to guarantee totally equal footing would be that the characters all begin the match with exact same gears and stats, and I don’t see this happening in many games, if any.

A PvP Arena game with progression?

Sorry, I’m out. While I love progression in single-player games, I’m mostly neutral about it in MMOs (out of lack of progression-less MMOs for me to play) and hate it in PvP games. I tend to not engage in PvP, at all, if either my character is better than my opponent’s or my opponent’s character is better than mine.

Francis courant goldstariv I thought it was, although a bit unbalanced due to mix and match builds. But it definitely suffered from lack of players.. AND a meaningful “end game”

We called this “Fury” back in the day. Didn’t last very long, but hey maybe times are different and the “scene” is ready for a game like this now?

I wouldn’t worry too much about BattleCry, that seems dead in the water and BattleBorn has a hefty price tag attached with a weird cash shop mechanic aswell.
Whilst your answering questions, I really liked the video and would help you guys out on that alone but as an Aussie player, what kind of server locations are you looking at? Being a shooter based game, Ping is everything. I’m used to 300+ ping in mmos and play a lot of GW2 ranked PvP (seems slightly similar tbh) but Overpower seems that it would be punishing on a higher latency.

Just by watching the trailer I would give these guys money buuuuuuuuuuutttt I’m pretty sure there won’t be an Aussie/oceanic server and that game looks very ping reliant. It reminds me a lot of Guild Wars 2 PvP which I love, also Forge but that died in the ass cause too hard.

Loadout died maybe a month after launching, do try to survive longer.

This comment system is not cooperating with me, I hope I don’t send like 20 duplicate messages.

I used to play a game like that back around 2000 on a german gaming website. I think it was called Runes or something. Basically a magic shooter with traps, healing and protecting your Nexus and other stuff. Wasn’t balanced at all, as people grinding where a lot more powerful than you, but fun as fuck. I’m inclined to actually give this a try even if I’m probably going to get steamrolled lol.

NobleNerd OverpowerGame Francis courant PizzaDoh Yeah I totally agree. They are a ton of them.. Overwatch / Battleborn / GIgantic / Paladins / Battlecry / Paragon .. the list goes on. I will say 2 years ago when we started developing though none of these we’re announced. Chivalry was one of our initial inspirations .But we kept to our design bc we think it has potential still.
But I do agree with you the genre is very crowded now.

OverpowerGame PizzaDoh You are right, Forge tried to force in a lot of stuff that felt clunky and odd (like wall jump elevators)

@Duur
It’s definitely Overwhelming, feels a bit like they are Overextending with the “Over” in games, soon the markets sure to get Oversaturated by it.

Francis courant Duur We did come up with the name before Overwatch, and filed a trademark for before they announced too, it’s definitely a coincidence! :)

PizzaDoh The concept of Overpower does share similarities to Forge but the gameplay is actually a lot different. Overpower is a much easier game to play with fewer abilities and is much more akin to a shooter like Counter – Strike or Quake III.  I don’t think the failures of one game / team are representative of a game genre as a whole and I hope to prove that with Overpower. We will be releasing a single player demo vs AI in the coming days to help promote the Kickstarter and if you stick around you can judge for yourself :)

Francis courant PizzaDoh NobleNerd We are very much a shooter! The game plays a lot like Counter – Strike with MOBA – inspired abilities. For example each classes weapon has a passive ability on it which can be swapped out to very the playstyle. Regardless though the combat is much more a kin to a shooter game. Perhaps the term MOBA has too many negative connotations with it and better word should have been used. But I believe the gameplay will speak for itself. :)

PizzaDoh Francis courant NobleNerd Yea I agree maybe they should have used another term than “MOBA inspired combat”. As you say people may start getting a little tired of MOBA.

But Overpower is a shooter and has little to do with MOBA, as far as I know. =P

PizzaDoh Do we know why Forge didn’t work as well as expected? I think that small games can survive with small audience if the development and maintenance costs aren’t too high.

PizzaDoh

Francis courant NobleNerd I do think them saying “MOBA” will hurt them more than help.

Even MOBA players are tired of every other game being a MOBA.
I already got my MOBA…I’d prefer my other games to not fit that space as closely.

This seems to be a lot like Forge, which didn’t work out so well.

Best of luck to these guys, but they’re entering a soon to be over-saturated market up against some pretty big development studios with a concept that looks to be very similar to a already failed game.
