Chris Roberts talks Star Citizen two-step verification, griefing, and Star Marine’s status

Star Citizen’s Chris Roberts is taking a break from signing swag for PAX South to answer another batch of 10 questions from the community. These range in topic from the possibility of two-step verification and taking part in dogfights through space stations.

Roberts addressed the future of Star Marine, saying that it’s not been canceled but that features such as boarding and FPS features are already in the game. Once the full FPS feature set is complete, the studio will turn on the Star Marine mode to offer arena combat for those who want to play it.

He also talked about the griefing that’s been running rampant since the Alpha 2.0 launch. Roberts said that he doesn’t want to go overboard in building “a nanny state” but will be introducing systems like bounties and player enforcement that should curtail griefing.

You can watch the full broadcast from Supreme Admiral Roberts after the jump!

Sleepery Bounties should definitely be in the game.  Why?  Because in any universe if you have someone going around stealing ships, killing people, etc. there would be an incentive to catch/kill that person.  It also very much fits within the sandbox universe of Star Citizen.  Star Wars Galaxies had a great system that Robert’s could build on.

I’ve had some amazing PvP in SC on remote outposts/  I could care less about Star Marine.  Boarding ships and getting jumped while trying to turn on a station power grid is way more fun.

Hanthos MrEllis Yeah kill-spawn-kill games are about on par with kill-round-kill games to me. I don’t mind respawn but I like games that reward more for objectives and team play than kills. I wish kills would garner you the least points in team based games. But pointless lobby type shooting in a sandbox seems silly.

GoJammit MrEllis I wouldn’t mind some sort of objective based scenario with rewards. Or even pve type areas with co-op and rewards or control of areas for a limited time.

Estranged MrCrunch26 It’s not just a bounty system, it’s a reputation system. If you are killing players in lawful space, you’ve got to deal with the UEE military and police.

melissaheather Ive actually been spend any of my game time in AC instead of the PU. I’ve seen what there is o see, I guess. I heard something about a surprise added in the patc, but I have no idea what it is. I wish I was running into roving bads of Vanduul or pirates, but all i get  is the mostly copy past stations with the same security with the same script and the same enemies. With the occasion increased number of baddies sometimes that could just as well be a glitch as a plan.
I’m happy to see progress, but I will spend my gaming time elsewhere until something more than a bug fix comes along. I actually kinda regret wasting bandwitdth on the last patch. It’s not like I plan on playing anytime soon.

SoMuchMass I’ve never really thought about that. I turned mine off one month because I was short on dough and just never bothered to turn it back on, but I had been subscribed for a really long time.  Funny thing is that the only benefits I was getting meant nothing to me until just recently when I have something to spend all those credits I earned on.
But I’d be interested to find out how much they make from subs. And how much of it really goes to the shows and swag they talk about.

Serrenity MrCrunch26 There will be consequences, just nothing in right now because they are a little more concerned with the server staying online and having more that20 people per instance, and having more than one system to play in.

deekay_zero MrCrunch26 i don’t think that will be a big deal, especially once the stores in game come online and then going to that station will have little or no value whatsoever.

And yes, there is zero resone to go there unless you want to shoot someone or be shot at. Though I will say, one of the missions you have, but you in a station where people do some shooting. And there are no guns to pick up there.

MrEllis  Star Marine is/was the FPS version of Arena Commander. It was a carrot to keep the PvP community interested and from rioting while they worked on the mechanics of how you would interact with the first person universe. I hope they still release the module for those that want the kill-instaspawn-kill gameplay. Having Sata Ball as part of the Verse would be nice as well.

Kataq GoJammit MrEllis Nothing. Not a damn thing. You show up, you hope your pistol is good enough to get inside and get a bigger gun, and then you either wait around for someone to shoot or you leave.
Sounds like a blast huh?

JayPower That’s fine, but it should take 10 minutes to toggle on and off, and you shouldn’t be able to chat within the toggle time period; this is to avoid you seeing a prize out in space, toggling on, following for 10 minutes while calling all your buddies, and then ganking them, just to toggle off right after.

deekay_zero Agreed 2 maps and a scoreboard for a 8 v 8 CTF match is not a higher priority than a party system, more content to explore, and larger world population and the sandbox IMO.

Darkdrakke

Darkdrakke

Cotic_OP They didn’t say it won’t see the light of day only that all the mechanics are being implemented a bit at a time into the PU. When that’s done and working they can just then add the TWO maps and a scoreboard an there you go what you have been waiting for? i mean Hello there much better FPS than Star Marine out now CS GO and Rainbow 6 Siege just to name 2.

Darkdrakke

Kataq GoJammit pretty much FPS in SC means leave the “Safe Area ard Port Olisar everywhere else if full blow open World PVP you Press 1 key and pull your gun out that FPS done. That Station is just where you can get a better weapon.

Darkdrakke

MrEllis that all the FPS was ever going to be, which is why i don’t care if they never add Star marine, just give me all the mechanics in the Open Sandbox world..if i really want to play a game like Star marine ill go play COD or CS GO

GoJammit MrEllis What is/will there be to fight over at these stations?

Kataq

GoJammit Kataq I see. I have no clue about this stuff, just that RipperX talked about it using terms like “FPS mode”.
I don’t really have a problem with stuff like this. As the game expands the instances of “I can’t get to station X” become less and less. I guess it’s only frustrating when they are limited to so few stations (it being Alpha and all) and it becomes more tricky to try out and test this stuff.. Overall, I’m really happy to hear that the game is mostly Open PvP.

GoJammit

MrEllis It is supposed to have both. The FPS scenarios like battlefield in the Arena commander and then actually regular gameplay in the persistent universe.

GoJammit

Kataq Yeah I don’t  know why Chris would try and back out like he never said there was going to be a rinse repeat scenario. They said those would be there as well as similar things to the presentation of 2.0 where we capture disabled ships. If it’s not ready yet, that’s fine, but don’t pretend it was never supposed to happen.

I’ve never had a problem getting to that station. And to be fair, everywhere is open for combat except Port Olisar. There are two stations you can go inside and fight. Niether are what I would call an arena. It’s just a place to get out of your ship. I got into a fight around one of the distress beacons.

Kataq  No, it’s not really griefing. But it’s something that CR could and should do something about rather than blowing it off.

I watched a youtube video of RipperX playing Alpha 2.0. He was streaming and trying to show his audience the FPS stuff. He said he had to get to a particular space station, where the FPS mode “arena” was. After 10 minutes of jumping in with his ship and getting shot and chased away, he tried a suicide run and jumped out of his ship (it was destroyed) and tried to float to the door. He died just at the entrance.

Now I’m not calling all these people trying to kill him griefers, but it was quite frustrating watching RipperX not even be able to make it to the FPS “arena” stuff and have to give up. Maybe there was a much easier way for him to do all this, as he was self-admittedly a SC noob :D

Yeah, they’re a joke in EVE too. And apparently no one cares enough to play police or white knight it so it’s a griefer/ganker paradise. Why can’t they add a toggle switch for players to turn off all PvP if they want in these games?

MrCrunch26  I must profess to being somewhat disappointed in Chris’s response. Trying to put it in the hands of the players does nothing but feed the problem and is the direct opposite of what the community being ‘griefed’ is looking for.

As I’ve yet to see any game where self-policing works well enough to avoid driving the non-PvP players out, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I knew from the start that the game, as envisioned and presented by CR, would degenerate into a gankfest only enjoyable for either PvPers or the rare PvE players that don’t mind becoming targets. Which is why I’ve kept my pledge to the $30 early bird one, and I don’t think I will even bother creating a character in the official server; I will just grab the official private server software and run it that way, modding and tweaking as I see fit.

Serrenity MrCrunch26 open world PVP is bad.  Just look at archage.  It only had a wave of interest until everyone got tired of the kill fest. Open world PVP has limited appeal. If that is ok with you then be happy with the smaller player base.  I have never know an open world PVP game to achieve large scale success.

Serrenity

MrCrunch26 I think I would amend their ‘mistake’ to not being that they included open world PVP, but rather they implemented without an appropriate balance / consequence to asshattery.  The reason people grief is that they can be an ass with really no in-game detriment.  In WoW, you could gank the hell out of someone directly in front of a guard, kill the guard and waltz right up to a merchant and trade with them, even though they were 5 feet away from where you just slaughtered 2 people.  Wushu had the jail system, which helped but I still got ganked occasionally.  Black Desert Online’s system sounds interesting, but we’ll have to see in execution.
but that’s really it – open pvp turns into a gankfest not  because it’s open pvp, but rather because there’s no consequence for that behavior.  Open-world PvP in and of itself, isn’t bad.

Honestly, playing the alpha right now and i’m impressed with the level thats been achieved w/ the FPS, Star Marines always had this feeling of a PVP/CTF enviro, so i’m not really dissapointed. When it comes to community policing, I like the idea of placing bounties on bad actors and griefers w/ qualifiers(kicks puppies, steals candy from babies, punches grannies, ect..). It allows the community to take down jackholes a few pegs while still keeping the PU running.

MrCrunch26 i think the word griefing is very over the top for what you typically will see in the current alpha universe here.

typically people go to one singular warp point to pvp, and generally you see very little to no pvp outside of that area. this area is specifically intended for fps pvp in particular but also where we tend to arrange to meet up to pvp each other. you don’t really go there unless you want to pvp in teh first place.

that being said, the fps part of that the assault rifle pick up is inside the station so fps pvpers tend to grab it when no one is around then sort of “hide? just off the station’s phsyic’s grid in zero g camping for randoms to show up to grab the rifle and gank them, which is a bit IMBA. so basically the ideal solution in my mind would be more spawns of the assault rifle in more areas that are more accessible. which is alot less work than the fairly low priority at this time imo but planned pvp vs apvp balancing systems.

otherwise the alpha universe in general is a very very basic state right now, with alot of wonkiness and bugs of a certain anture which are a higher priority imo than pvp systems.

It looks like Ultima Online all over again.  The lessons where not learned.  Recently Starlong of origin gave an interview where he said that the main mistake that they made with Ultima Online was the open world PVP.   I was there myself back in the day.  I watched as these dreadlords would rampage through a group of players and kill everyone.  The dreadlords were very wealthy and no one could touch them because they had the best equipment.  What we found out was that ordinary casual players did not like being in law enforcement and having to take time to hunt down these dreadlords. Ordinary casual players liked to gather, adventure and craft.   So the mistake that Starlong was saying was made was that they didn’t recognize this in time and they lost half or upward of 75% of their player base because of the rampant ganking and stealing.  The issue was eventually addressed but the players never came back.  That is why I left Ultima Online as well; i didn’t like having to restart my progress over and over again.  Bounties do not work for player characters.  Just look at the sad tale of Ultima Online.

melissaheather it has more to it now than landmark has right now… except for persistency which isn’t saying much really. qq

ofc not a voxel builder game like landmark either. so there’s that. but basic voxelengine powered games are a dime a dozen on steam early access without having the MMO DRM cash shop stuff or limits on build space. generally similar varied states of bugginess and completedness to landmark as well.

that being said, there really is very little to this game right now. a couple quest chains that have no rewards beyond checking them out. a fps/dogfight oriented pvp area (people usually go there to find pvp, you see alot less of it in the more pve oriented areas), and the basic eve style warping mechanics in a map about the size of your typical small eve system, in terms of gameplay space wise i guess and travel times both warp and non warp. with 16 player instance pop cap and very very basic matchmaking that doesn’t really include fleshed out grouping/intentional friends list matchmaking in any kind of decent way.

mostly i spend most of my play sessions running into teh gemotry clipping issues assuming the servers aren’t constantly crashing. my best session ever i merely had the bug with my one dogfighter ship the mustang delta that the blackout/redout mechanic was bugged and i was getting it far to easily and far too severely which made pve and pvp combat in it very dificult (and luckily i was with a friend becuase most of all our combat i was blacked out)
