Sodaandcandy I generally presume people are good until proven otherwise.  What as Smed done that makes him evil?

I don’t understand why anyone is interested in Hero Song. All we got are some vague platitudes about how deep the systems are without ANY real tangible details.

Sodaandcandy If you’re looking for unbiased MMO news then this isn’t the place. Most of the people who write articles here all have their pet favorites and jump in front of the bus for them. It’s still a good read and worth the time to scan the site but just know going in what slant you’re going to get.

Says someone who was gushing over him in this very podcast. Something about how you got an exclusive interview and knew before everyone else about his new game. Of course you will defend him.

I disagree about jerks being as common in the early 2000s. The early mmos I played back then were full of friendly gen-exers. It’s the millinials that grew old enough to type that infected the modern day mmo with text cancer. The meaning of the word troll as it exists today was not even in use back then.

Cramit When did MJ show up? Sneaky little minx, she.

In terms of the chat channel issue, there were certainly trolls/undesirable players even when the gaming community was small.  With the inclusion of the masses, it just made the problem even worse.  A lot of players these days love the anonymity of the internet as us older folks that were around at the beginning did.

IMO, I disagree with MJ, in that I think tools for the community to use to police itself is the best route. There will surely be corruption and issues all the time but in my experience, a community that can police itself is ALWAYS better than a game’s staff doing it.

As for Smed’s new game, it seems like it is following the path of the Diablo/Path of exile gameplay, which again to me, isn’t all that interesting.  Sure he is adding some different mechanics that are normally not in these style games but that is the design philosophy of this generation.  Get a basic design and then throw all the different sandbox mechanics you can think of into it so you can say, “It’s something different!” while it is actually the same shit with maybe 1-3 additions to it that the style of game never had.  To find true innovation, you need to look to the indie’s but they have their own issues like little money and constant feature creep cause of trying to do the open development with their communities.

I’m sorry you ended up playing Diablo III.  Having the communities that you speak of is a mechanism I hate.  Basically allowing you to be in multiple guilds so that you never feel like you actually have to RUN A GUILD.  Rather you can just join as many “communities” as you want and never feel like the failure you are cause you actually can’t run a guild.  It is instant gratification, hipster generation BullSh*t and the reason that guilds overall really don’t matter anymore cause so few are actually run like a guild rather than just another tag on your character that you can choose what it says.

Gotta make everyone feel like a special snowflake.  However, my interest in playing the same content over and over again just for different color loot ended awhile back and completely regret my purchase of Diablo III, so I really don’t have a dog in the fight but I feel like Diablo III is the combination of every bad mechanic Blizzard ever stole/created, so not too surprising.

I will say I am enjoying Blade N Soul for only the combat but I would agree that the name “Boob & Soul” is completely deserved.  Every game that comes from the east pretty much has sexualized kids and woman all the time.  No big surprise.  The combat is still awesome but the rest of the game is meh.  Hate quest grinders but bearable with the combat.
As for Smed, I can understand some hate.  There are games that he was in charge of that many people have a very strong connection too and if you change it, there will be anger.  I can’t express how upset I am that we STILL don’t have a true sequel to Everquest.  EQ is one game from SOE/DBG that I am highly invested in and I hate not having the mechanics of the original EQ in a newer game with “some” updates to certain mechanics.  There are no real virtual worlds in games anymore, everything is just a couple zones with instant ports all over and boring quests to grind to progress.  Miss the original games of the genre as they were all very different and offered large worlds.  Specifically EQ, AC, UO, DAoC.

Celestial Omedon Yeah, I used to be bigger on “turn it off,” and now when I am soloing, that’s just not what I want to do… I want that tiny connection to the people around me. Or not around me, in most games.

Siphaed Yep, that’s exactly what would happen. It’s exactly what happens now in every other game where guilds can wield even the slightest amount of power over other players. Unfortunate.

Caerulei Some people hold him responsible for the (many) SWG fiascos, some for failing with the EQ franchise, some for the H1Z1 early access mess, some for shutting down or canceling the 10 or so games SOE nuked, some for failing for SOE, some for selling SOE, some for whom he sold SOE to, some for last year’s layoffs, some for the Lizard Squad harassment (…), and on and on. Someone started a thread on the MMORPG reddit the other day with nothing but ranting about him, and most of the stuff they were accusing him of didn’t even happen or didn’t happen the way they said. The grudges are pretty foolish.

Never understood the hate of Smed.  Did he run over someone’s child?  I’ve always thought he was a neat fellow.

I wouldn’t mind player ran/moderated  chat channels that could either have the player-moderator mute another player or have an overall vote-to-mute from all the users in the channel.  Obviously main, widely used channels such as /1 (General) /2 (Trade) /3 Dungeon Finder /4 (Quest Finder /5 (RP) would become a standard among the playerbase. It would also be a great system with dealing with chat trolls because if they’re vote-muted from the channel, it could do a system automated punishment of 1st time 1hr ban from the channel; 2nd time 24hr ban from the channel; 3rd time is a strike out perma-ban from the channel.
The only major problem with the system is that can easily be abused by larger guilds influencing their members to vote-ban certain other players from channels.    This itself would lead to a chaotic mess of larger guilds oppressing other players in most chat channels.  A system of tyranny against the playerbase of the game.  Corruption would follow those with the power to vote or sway the larger popular vote.

I think that Smedley is just over dealing with the money side, which is understandable. I don’t think that it’s a bad thing that Kickstarter didn’t work out for him. Given all the baggage he has from SOE and Daybreak, being on Kickstarter might have invited drama. The last thing he probably wants to do right now is defend timelines, design decisions, frequency of backer updates, etc.

I don’t think that the graphics will hinder Hero’s Song at all. There are a lot of well-received games with pixel art, low fidelity, or retro aesthetics – UnderTale, Binding of Isaac, Shovel Knight, Cave Story, Towerfall Ascension, Prison Architect, just to name a few. I think Bree is right that Hero’s Song has the potential to fit right into that same niche as Terraria, which is probably my favorite game ever. So, I will definitely be following it.

As far as Wildstar goes, I’m looking forward to the actual NCSoft financials. I hope Wildstar is doing better than that investment firm predicted. I find it hard to log in because I don’t want to get attached to a game that might be going away – I know that makes me part of the problem. My wariness has more to do with NCSoft than it does Wildstar at this point.

Omedon I do, since I’m not in a guild.  Granted, I ignore it the majority of the time.
