Marvel Heroes 2016 launches today with new story chapter, visual updates

Marvel Heroes is about to reinvent itself as Marvel Heroes 2016. And it’s even 2016! What a coincidence!

Launching today, the upgrade will download for free to everyone’s client; it includes the new story chapter, console controller support, Deadpool’s revamp, a new team-up, steam achievements, the first wave of character visual updates, leaderboards, and the latest playable toon, Black Cat, who brings the game’s total up to 55. The Mac client also leaves beta today.

Gazillion Studio Director Jeff Lind writes, “What we’re launching today is just the beginning of what will be the biggest year yet for the game. Our awesome community expects regular updates, and they’ll continue to get those – but it’s the big content drops like today’s first wave of the Marvel Heroes 2016 initiative where the game will really shine. You’ll see these throughout the year, and the best announcements are yet to come.”

Stay tuned next week for a more in-depth look at the game’s 2016 initiative, and bide your time with the enormous new batch of screenshots, infographic, and videos below. (Seriously, this is how you do assets.)

OK I have read through the patch notes now and the best thing is:  “The credit cap has been increased from 3,000,000 to 9,999,999!”
About time too best QoL change ever o/ The other stuff in the update is quite nice as well and the controller support seems pretty well designed but will take me a bit of time to get used to I think.  Good stuff so far

JonBuck I notice it also auto populates the recipies too, so if you have the right items in your inventory / stash it will put them into the recipe without you having to go look through your stash for them which is a real nice QoL

dorn2 Omedon They’ve pretty much already run out of major X-Men characters and they added several last year, with one of them just being last month, so that doesn’t add up.  They seem to really be struggling to get new players/keeping players interested and I think the character choices is one of the biggest problems with that.

They just have to accept that the “mainstream” characters are all done and maybe switch to focus on some popular characters from the actual comics.  Both Miles and Kamala Khan probably would have brought far more fans into the game than playable Green Goblin or Ultron ever will.  Great villains, but who wants to play as them?

As for “the year of features”, I don’t buy it.  Most of the things listed in this update are things that were already in the game or have been planned for a very long time, even the story chapter itself is months behind schedule.  Combined with the reports of massive layoffs the past year and dwindling player numbers, I think it’s pretty obvious the smaller pool of new characters for 2016 is a result of the game failing, rather than any kind of purposeful shift to developing core features.

It looks like they majorly simplified crafting. There are no longer elemental grades.

the transition from Marvel heroes to MH 2015 felt a lot more substantial given the new things they added to the game at the same time. It actually felt like it was a game upgrade, like going form 1.0 to 2.0

The transition from 2015 to 2016 doesnt actually bring anything new it seems outside of maybe the secret invasion stuff. Everything else already existed in the game throughout 2015 before the change. At best, this change over feels like the game went from 2.0 to 2.1

I bought the team-up pack so can’t wait to get home and start using Agent Venom. Can’t believe I’m still going to get 2 more team-ups. Best forty bucks I spent on the game. Great trailer and it has me very excited for the game again.

The actually haven’t run out of marquis heroes.  It’s just that Disney doesn’t want them putting out more X-men.   So instead we get villains like Ultron, Green Goblin, etc.

That trailer is got me all hyped up. I think I’ll have to put down Blade n Soul this weekend.

AndrewClear I’m looking forward to the controller support as well.  Don’t mind the keyboard use but I’d rather do a good controller on this.

Can’t wait to try this with a controller, I hate keyboard and mouse for the most part (but tolerate it when it is the only option).

I said “running out,” ongoing, not past tense. There are still more to go, but “12. Year” or whatever was not reasonably sustainable long term.

Omedon Sorry but I disagree. While I’m happy less heroes more content is a thing, 7 is too little imo. There are tons of B-List heroes yet to be released. Most notable Angel, Beast, Wasp and Spider-Woman. I see these 4 pop up everywhere on the forums so they are demanded. I guess what I’m saying is while I like the direction, they are certianly not running out of popular heroes. Not just yet.

Ok, if this is going to be the “year of features,” as the smaller advance pack might suggest, good for them, that’s what they need! They’ve filled out their roster quite nicely, and I don’t think anyone reasonable would mind them slowing the hero releases to a reasonable trickle if we got more modes and more content to play those heroes in. They are clearly running out of marquis heroes to showcase, which was inevitable, so it’s time to fill the game itself out!
