Blade & Soul releases Rising Waters, reaches 2M players in the west

Are you finished with all of the content that Blade & Soul has to offer, now that you’ve had a few weeks to play since the launch? No? Well, that’s just too bad because NCsoft is throwing even more stuff at you to do with today’s Rising Waters patch. Deal with it.

The content update adds plenty to the core game, starting with the Bloodshade Harbor dungeon. This challenging instance comes in both normal six-player and hard four-player modes. When dusk falls, this dungeon turns into a 24-player raid called Nightshade Harbor.

Rising Waters also contains Mushin’s Tower, a seven-floor dungeon that can be completed solo. Players who are at level 45 can now use earned experience toward new Hongmoon levels that give additional skills and stats.

Source: Update overview, patch notes. Thanks to Luvly for the tip!

Update: NCsoft’s latest press release included player numbers:

“NCSOFT has confirmed that Blade & Soul has now surpassed 2 million players in the US and Europe, only three weeks since its official launch.”

I have mixed feelings about B&S. The general aestethic is nice, the combat is great, the music is great, there’s a solid group finder so you can actually do leveling dungeons… this is all nice. And still, I feel like something is missing. Or perhaps many somethings are missing. It seems like combat is all there is. I suppose that was to be expected, but some part of me always hopes for more. A gameworld where smashing everything that moves outside of quest towns is all there is to do, feels empty.
Because of that, even though it seems to be a well-made game, the game has zero stickiness or addiction level for me. I’ve even found myself playing silly app games on my phone during time where I could have played B&S. Just didn’t feel like logging in.

Tithian Cramit Exactly, finding a group for a dungeon was never so fast as in Blade and Soul. My longest queue ever was when I queued a mid level dungeon at like 8 am, and even then it only took a minute and a half.

Necromonger 100% agreed. There are *far* too many messages popping up about buying gold. It’s pretty ridiculous.

I haven’t put a ton into B&S, but what I’ve seen so far is fantastic.

Its always amusing to me how salty people get over sub / account / player numbers.  What matters is, is there enough people to do what you want with. So far even though I rolled on one of the new servers created after the mad new game player rush, I still see lots of folks running around and have no problem finding people to do stuff with.

Be happy something is doing well for once lol. To be honest so far it seems a very well thought out f2p system thats not punitive or overly greedy. That alone has peeked my interest so far. My one critique would be that there isnt enough reason / encouragement to sub atm beyond the wardrobe which in my opinion should be a one time purchase.

Not suprised.
Half of those numbers are bots and gold seller accounts

Cramit About the little dungeons: Press F8, find a cross-server group in 20 seconds (or less). There are a couple of them missing from the list, but other than that…

Ironweakness Not sure but in TW for some reason I had wardrobe access for a while and then one day I logged in and didn’t, and lost access to my costumes. I think it was some sort of bug that seemed to persist for quite a while, because it’s otherwise free for everyone to access there. But since my costumes were in the wardrobe I couldn’t get them out. I don’t know if it will be the same way here given that was likely a bug and this will be an intentional shut off from the feature.

RagnarTheDrunk Leilonii Thanks I appreciate the links, unfortunately I already have it setup that way. I’ve had to create custom WTFast profiles for other games (Blade and Soul TW and Black Desert KR) so it wasn’t a huge issue for me once I realized I had to actually create a custom profile for Blade and Soul NA instead of using the preset. For some reason the preset that WTFast has doesn’t actually work.

I think the reason I had so many issues after that was just because the game is buggy and unoptimized. It’s an older version of the game which may explain some of that – like I said, I have played it in Taiwan and had no issues at all, but they have a much newer version that is likely more optimized and has the bugs worked out. And no issues with that either. So our older version of the game may be part of it.

But I also think since they had to make a number of changes to the game during localization, that likely introduced a lot of bugs as well.

I know from my extensive searching the other night that I’m not the only one with issues. It’s actually very widespread and a large number of players are having the same or similar issues. So we’ll see what happens.

Smokeyz Pretty sure at very conservative, anyone who ever made a game character… including bot accounts, rage quits when saw queue length etc, lol.

I’d rather want to see concurrent player online, and any other statistics that isn’t the number of subscribers is just meaningless.

I would have preferred a more thorough localization, but despite some of the foreign design elements, I’m really enjoying the game.  Im still not max level so the new content is wasted on me at this moment, but a silver lining to waiting for the game to come west is the  stream of content for EU/NA players just waiting to be released.

Is this 2 million players that playing or all the people who made a acct. and quiet after 1 hour or so didn’t play again. Or does the number count gold spammer making new acct. each time they get banned.

The wardrobe thing is odd, and very frustrating. I would definitely consider a one time purchase unlock if I’m still playing in a couple of months but subbing to use the wardrobe doesn’t make any sense. Do all your clothes pop back into your inventory when you unsub? That just seems silly.

If I’m not mistaken, Black Desert’s combat is at least similar. I haven’t had a chance to try it out myself though.

Don’t forget the V-day tshirt and panties costume. No exaggeration here, that’s literally what they are – a short unbuttoned tshirt and panties.

Fun game but it seems the new patch has introduced a bug that crashes my graphics card.  Nope, not the graphics card, other folks are reporting the same issue.

When I do get to play I look at my watch and it is hours later.

Of the classes – the summoner seems to be the easiest early on followed by the force master, destroyer, blade master, kung fu master, and assassin (simply due to the numerous available combos).

I’m having a great time with this game… I didn’t expect to, I went looking for a sandbox and settled on this until I could try Black Desert. The last thing I wanted was another themepark, but the combat really makes the difference. I could grind mobs all day long with this combat system. I ignored the class ‘difficulty levels’ and went with an assassin so I’m having fun with all the combos, etc. I haven’t PvP’d or grouped yet. I really wish someone would do this type of combat in a living world/ virtual world/ place you could call home type of MMO.

Leilonii Hi – I was actually looking up what WTFast was the other day and ran across someone describing your exact same problem – it was a setting they left out while configuring the WTFast.

A Dad Supreme zyrusticae Qarran You’re completely missing the point of the comparison, where all themepark MMORPGs have some sort of gear grind in them, and attributing it to Asian MMORPGs is completely pointless as it still isn’t something exclusive to the region whatsoever.
The whole “grind” stereotype came from games like Lineage and Ragnarok Online, where literally the only way to level up was to grind mobs to the end of time. Actually, even the original Everquest was much like this, which makes the accusation particularly stupid and ignorant.
I’ll note that Tera and Aion don’t have much in the way of grinding or RNG until the very end as well, and have very brisk leveling paces. In fact, Aion in particular is the game that convinced me that people complaining about “Korean grinders” know fuck-all about anything they’re talking about and are better brushed-off than given any sort of credence.
It’s a themepark MMORPG thing. Just leave it at that. Stop trying to attribute qualities to entire regions that are better attributed to genre practices.

I did some arena PvP last weekend, and it was a lot of fun. I found out that I’m pretty evenly matched with blade dancers, but I consistently get my ass kicked against force masters. I almost felt sorry for one, who was kicking my ass so bad it wasn’t even a challenge for her.

zyrusticae A Dad Supreme Qarran Actually, it is.
The RNG and grind in Asian games is pretty evident from the tutorials, not ‘eventually’. It’s pretty much there from the start in the majority of them.
Not sure which Asian MMOs you’ve played where RNG/grind wasn’t in the forefront from the start and didn’t come to play until the ‘end’, but please be sure to make a nice long list if you can remember their names.

BnS is one of those MMO’s in which you log on for an hour do your daily quests, some arena PvP, and a couple of dungeons and then log out.  It’s not an MMO in which you can ‘live’ in like SWG, UO, DaOC and even vanilla WoW.

zyrusticae
Guest
zyrusticae

A Dad Supreme Qarran Every themepark MMORPG has a grind eventually. If it doesn’t come up during leveling, it WILL come up during endgame where you’re just rolling for your CHANCE to roll for your class-specific items against any other member of that class in your party.

zyrusticae

zyrusticae

Leilonii ScottLeyes Everything has a market value except for untradeables anyway, and untradeables are either costumes or class-specific weapons.
If you’re getting outbid all the time, it’s because they value the item more than you do. You get a share of the money, so it is by definition the most fair system (as opposed to RNG need and greed BULLSHIT which I will never understand people defending EVER seriously what is WRONG with you people?! *ahem*).

zyrusticae

blaaznar ScottLeyes Leilonii Easy solution: put up a quick low-but-not-coppers starting bid to speed things along. Works every time. Either people start finally putting up real money, or you get the item for cheap because everyone’s too shocked to counter-bid.

Qarran “My only critique is that there is still too much RNG for my taste.  I get it.  But man… grinding a WB 20 plus times until finally getting the drop I need is rough.”

Wouldn’t be an Asian game if that huge amount of grind and RNG wasn’t included.

ArtemisiaWS Cramit Agreed, the desert area is a bit too vast, which makes the  quest mobs far more spread out. Once you get past that, the leveling smoothes out again.

Leilonii What I noticed last week after downloading a big patch was that my disk was thrashing for about 20 mins after finishing the download and apply.  Was getting the same as you describe – took an age to get through the splashscreen and then it played really badly.  I killed the game, restarted and left it on the login screen ready to press play.. Disk thrashed again for 10-15 mins, eventually just stopped and all problems gone.  Looked like the game was doing a post-patch re-organisation of files from watching resource monitor.  Could be the same thing – try again with the Task Manager open and if it’s disk, leave it running while you do something else for a while.

It’s surprisingly fun at times for a quick hour or two of thrashing through martial arts.  Not at all convinced about the monetization though.
Premium (sub) doesn’t seem worth it.  I’d be tempted to buy some outfits, but without being subbed you can’t use the wardrobe to store them, so your bags just get filled up & so far, expanding bag slots or bank slots is overly expensive too.  Outfits are only given once too, so no account bound outfits or sharing between alts, which feels wrong too.
If they made the wardrobe free (or even one-time purchase rather than rental via sub) and outfits account bound, I’d be spending money with them.  As it stands, I’m enjoying it for free as a light time waster game.

The game is surprisingly good. My only issue is the American voice overs, they seem to “silly”. Even though the cutscenes are over the top, sometimes they can tone down the pitch of people’s voices I think.

But once I got past that, the game has a lot going for it. I am never really a heavy PvP player. Mostly I PvP if my brother wants to. But this is one of the first games where I see someone and I feel “hey let me test out if I can kill them”

Its easy to tell if someone is a higher level and you should leave them alone. Players within your level mostly will only kill you due to skill. Classes are well balances and you have to be strategic in fighting. You cannot just button mash and think you will win.

The cash shop doesn’t bother me at all and someone being premium doesn’t really effect the game much.
All in all a well executed game with a lot of content to be released.

I had not expected to enjoy the game as much as i am. I have levelled a Force master to 45. And now doing on a daily basis the e-fleet + world pvp in misty woods. The combat is amazing if you ask me, one of the most enjoyable ones i have experienced in any game so far. The PVP and Dungeons are fun as well though the max level dungeons is sadly a copy of the e-fleet outside daily zone.

What i am looking forwards to currently is the 6v6 PVP battles which should be hopefully released in a timely manner. The only thing (as a permium member) that bothers me is that i still have to buy all those unsealing charms and repair kits even if they are only like 10 silvers a pop. Another thing i would like to see them change is the fact that doing world PVP causes damage to your weapon. I get that its a nice way to gate the content / force people to pay for repair kits but seeing how quickly they break down (easily burn through 3*4/5 repair kits in a day) it becomes tedious and annoying.

ScottLeyes Leilonii I mean, it’s an interesting idea.. You don’t get the item you wanted, but at least you get your share of the current market value of the item – it is fair.
The most issue I have with it is it takes too much time – every bid starts at 1 copper and revolves 30 clicks on each of the bidders side turning into a overly long battle of chicken to see who gets bored first and forfeits the item… all the while the rest of the party is waiting twiddling their thumbs.

ScottLeyes I made over a gold yesterday just from people bidding on Moonwater Tears while running Skittering Tunnels trying to get the outfit to drop. People are paying above market value because they get too caught up in the bidding war. You may have to run a dungeon a few times but I’ve found it can be more lucrative than doing dailies.

In less than 1 month and we have new content and pvp ladder start too. Very nice, i like BnS pvp beacuse is competitive with out any pay2win features like other korean games (black desert, archeage, tera, etc). About PVE i dont care but seems that mushin tower with another ladder (record time) can be fun.

Leilonii ScottLeyes I’ve decided, for the time being, to just pass on everything – I let the high rollers get into a bidding war, then I get a share of the final price (winning amount is split between the other party members). This may be the only way I get any money for a while.

Leilonii
Guest
Leilonii

ScottLeyes The idea of a bid system is completely dumb and I hate it in every version of this game I play. I should not have to content with the richest of the rich just to win my loot so I can gear up and make money. It’s completely backwards.

Qarran It’s a shame that the classes/gameplay don’t really “open up” until you hit the mid 20s. The leveling gets grindy in Cinderlands, but the classes get all their abilities and start getting skills, so you actually feel like you’re getting better as you go.
