The Daily Grind: How do you absorb lore in MMOs?

I have a troubled relationship with lore in MMOs. On one hand, I am a narrative junkie and deeply appreciate detailed and interesting game worlds that have thought-out histories and sagas. On the other hand, I often find myself bumbling about in-game, only getting snatches here and there of the overall picture and becoming frustrated at the piecemeal approach of absorbing lore.

Maybe books have spoiled me? Maybe that’s just a hazard of playing MMOs? But I’m curious today how you absorb lore in MMOs. Do you read all of the quest text and tooltips? Do you spend your extra time combing through wikis after hours? Does someone have to sit you down and walk you through all of the historical complexities? Or are you generally as lost as I am?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
