Final Fantasy XI prepares to shut down its console service

Stand at attention, players, and pay your respects. Final Fantasy XI is marching down its final weeks of operation on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 before being shut down on March 31st. The good news is that this won’t mean the end of the game or those players’ experiences in FFXI, as long as they’re willing to migrate to the PC.

“Words cannot possible express how much we have appreciated your support over these many years,” Square Enix posted. “But this does not mean the end of Vana’diel, and we hope you will continue to join us on the Windows version of the game. Each month we will continue to bring you game updates, and I hope you will accompany us each step of the way.”

The studio also announced that it will be welcoming back old players to enjoy some free game time at the end of March.

exeeter lorenleah The thing is that we *will* get to that point 10 years from now and because of getting to see how they’ve handled FFXI, I do trust that XIV will stay open.  By that point the playerbase will have shrunk whether they’re still releasing patches or not.

lorenleah while i wish the best for both games,  its important to note that SEs continued support for ff11 does not necessarily translate to ff14.  11s structure allows it to exist for as long as it has,  14 on the other hand is essentially on a razors edge with updates.

If we ever get to a point 10 to 15 years from now, where 14 is in the same boat as 11 is, it would require another major game overhaul to stay live.  Honestly i do not see that happening personally.  On the other hand yoshi p has stated numerous times before that the games update frequency is budgeted around having 500k subs, i dont know if that is true still but if it is that i suppose it would work.

Basically,  post wow, theme park esque mmos are structured in a way where progression is far to vertical to have a long lasting life span without major financial support.   Whereas pre WoW mmos like EQ and ff11 are built from the very core with to be more horizontal and sandbox like, it is much easier to keep those games live and engaging on a much smaller budget for a much smaller player base.

Never played a MMO on a console.  Just sounds strange to me.

Sorenthaz I played this on dialup for a long time, and other than the first few minutes being shaky after each login, it ran with no issues for me. Oddly enough, even after being on PC and 360, I still preferred the PS2 version. It just seemed to run better.

Color me amazed that anyone was still running an MMO that supported the PS2. I know it was hugely popular back in the day, and remains still, but man that’s some serious hardware limitation to be dealing with in 2016. My condolences to the players affected.

I kinda understand about PS2 limitations of things like updates.
But 360? I don’t get that, massive harddrive (obliviously depends on user), current OS version made for full game downloads and like 3 times the power of the PS2.
Did their licence agreement with Microsoft run out or something? That’s the only logical reason I can think of them for them closing the 360 server at the same time as the PS2.

ThatLanteshGuy Sadly the game is “done” in terms of new content so we’ll never reap the rewards of no longer having console limitations :(

After all the years of hearing “PS2 limitations” I can’t be mad at this. At least the game will continue on PC. I still get tempted to go back to it some days.
