Colin Johanson says farewell to the Guild Wars 2 community

Last week’s big surprise on Friday was the departure of longtime Guild Wars 2 game director Colin Johanson from ArenaNet. Rumors and surprise swirled around the unexpected departure, but if you were worried that he had been forced out or that something untoward had happened, you can rest easy now; Johanson took to Reddit to give a farewell to the game’s community.

Johanson’s letter covers his time working for the company and the trip that he had personally taken from the early days of the original Guild Wars, stressing that his departure is a chance for new developers to take on new roles and distinguish themselves. It’s an emotional and heartfelt farewell, and well worth a read if you’re a part of the game’s community.

AnastashsKontostergios So, not liking the general direction ( or lack of ) of the game is being immature? Sorry, i won’t agree with that. My money is worth as much as yours were, and i have the right to criticize the game if it falls short in areas i see fit. Specially if that falling short was why they didn’t kept up their original ideas in the first place.

Not_On_The_Hype_Train Well, being the devil’s advocate, the entire Anet is now more focused on Redditmunication than forums. It’s not just a Colin thing. They even made a AMA on Reddit with Mike and they didn’t bother to do one on the forums. The forums are actually bitter as fuck from that.
I’m not as salty as you, but i also see Colin’s departure as a good thing.

For the people following ArenaNet since the early days Iam sure they remember that Colin was always nice like that even before he got a PR position. For the rest of you stop acting so immature. Goodbye Colin, we will miss you!

Best part is, good old Colin couldn’t even be bothered to carry his precious self to the actual GW2 forums to post his long winded, eloquent, goodbye. He pagent waved to his fan club on Reddit and gave a finger to everyone else.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Armsbend BritoBruno Eliot_Lefebvre Nope, because shit can be taken different when said differently.
And what you said is “why would he shed light on things?  For gamers?  Christ, be for real.  No one is paying him to screw his career only an idiot would do so.” Which isn’t exactly the same thing.
You think i want him to fuck up his career. No. I want his farewell to be a bit more insightful of the inner working of Anet. Colin was always wrapped in PR, and that made him a joke in GW2 community. I was hoping that at least his farewell wasn’t that wrapped either.
But if the only thing you can see from that is me kissing Eliot’s ass, then i feel sorry for you losing the point.

Armsbend BritoBruno Did i ever say that? I mean shed light, not burn his life down.
It can’t be possible that shedding a little light on the inner workings of Anet could fuck him up. I’m not saying that he should commit professional harakiri.

I just hope this dude has more direction for his life than what he had with GW2.
