Colin Johanson says farewell to the Guild Wars 2 community

Last week’s big surprise on Friday was the departure of longtime Guild Wars 2 game director Colin Johanson from ArenaNet. Rumors and surprise swirled around the unexpected departure, but if you were worried that he had been forced out or that something untoward had happened, you can rest easy now; Johanson took to Reddit to give a farewell to the game’s community.

Johanson’s letter covers his time working for the company and the trip that he had personally taken from the early days of the original Guild Wars, stressing that his departure is a chance for new developers to take on new roles and distinguish themselves. It’s an emotional and heartfelt farewell, and well worth a read if you’re a part of the game’s community.

AnastashsKontostergios So, not liking the general direction ( or lack of ) of the game is being immature? Sorry, i won’t agree with that. My money is worth as much as yours were, and i have the right to criticize the game if it falls short in areas i see fit. Specially if that falling short was why they didn’t kept up their original ideas in the first place.

Not_On_The_Hype_Train Well, being the devil’s advocate, the entire Anet is now more focused on Redditmunication than forums. It’s not just a Colin thing. They even made a AMA on Reddit with Mike and they didn’t bother to do one on the forums. The forums are actually bitter as fuck from that.
I’m not as salty as you, but i also see Colin’s departure as a good thing.

For the people following ArenaNet since the early days Iam sure they remember that Colin was always nice like that even before he got a PR position. For the rest of you stop acting so immature. Goodbye Colin, we will miss you!

Best part is, good old Colin couldn’t even be bothered to carry his precious self to the actual GW2 forums to post his long winded, eloquent, goodbye. He pagent waved to his fan club on Reddit and gave a finger to everyone else.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Armsbend BritoBruno Eliot_Lefebvre Nope, because shit can be taken different when said differently.
And what you said is “why would he shed light on things?  For gamers?  Christ, be for real.  No one is paying him to screw his career only an idiot would do so.” Which isn’t exactly the same thing.
You think i want him to fuck up his career. No. I want his farewell to be a bit more insightful of the inner working of Anet. Colin was always wrapped in PR, and that made him a joke in GW2 community. I was hoping that at least his farewell wasn’t that wrapped either.
But if the only thing you can see from that is me kissing Eliot’s ass, then i feel sorry for you losing the point.

Armsbend BritoBruno Did i ever say that? I mean shed light, not burn his life down.
It can’t be possible that shedding a little light on the inner workings of Anet could fuck him up. I’m not saying that he should commit professional harakiri.

I just hope this dude has more direction for his life than what he had with GW2.

BritoBruno Eliot_Lefebvre you arent going to jump down eliot’s throat for repeating the exact same thing I said?

Grats Eliot you have a silver tongue and a blue stamp that draws fair lips to ass.

BritoBruno so for the honor of honesty you’d say, “NCSoft was a goddamned beast to work for” he might not ever work again.  Why do that?  For a good read for gamers?

Eliot_Lefebvre BritoBruno SallyBowls1 True. He wouldn’t also commit character assassination by being a douche on reddit.
Man, i just want GW2 to get something outta this. Now that WS crashing is just a matter of “when”, maybe i’ll play GW2 mainly, i guess.

BritoBruno SallyBowls1 I like to think he just would have said nothing. I mean, he doesn’t work for the company any more, he’s not obligated to pen a gentle farewell.

SallyBowls1 Would he? I know you gotta have thick skin, but i don’t think you can be made of stone. Would his farewell be really as sweet if he worked through hell?
We’ll never know.

Armsbend BritoBruno “but i’m not a game dev, he knows better than me”.
If you bothered to fucking read, you would see i actually realize he knows it better.
Nor did i say him to screw his career. Actually that’s exactly wtf is wrong with this industry. Too much bullshit, too little honesty. Players are left on limbo about the direction the game they pay is going, and in the end, they have to accept or move on to the rest of the games, that will probably do the same.
If honesty is idiocy in this industry, i don’t foresee anything getting better.

Did the mmo industry crash today and nobody outside got told?

Kids today :-).

“you can rest easy now; ” ?????  I am sure everything is fine; no tin foil hat here.  But seriously, if Colin thought his boss was a sociopath, his coworkers smelled and massive layoffs were imminent, wouldn’t he pen the exact same sweet goodbye?

Farewells are about not hurting your reputation, not accuracy and investigative journalism.

I didn’t know of his role in the original GW. Also, I miss GW, reading his post brought back some fond memories.

I may be jaded and idiotic in assuming this, but everything Colin speaks reeks of PR to me. He could actually shed some light in why things went the way they went, but i’m not a game dev, he knows better than me.
That being said, i’m not sad for him, for two major reasons: First, he has a better job, so i’m happy for him, and second, he was a insane man steering the ship that GW2 is. He made a lot of controversial decisions and didn’t bat an eye, to why they would or wouldn’t work. The guy was full of pride and it ended becoming hubris.
It’s nice to be prideful of your work, but if your work never stops, you can’t be blinded by pride.
Welp, new times for GW2 ( i hope ) and a new life for Colin.
Win-win.
