It’s the Massively OP Podcast, an action-packed hour of news, tales, opinions, and gamer emails! And remember, if you’d like to send in your own letter to the show, use the “Tips” button in the top-right corner of the site to do so.

Love BDO. As soon as I got into the Node System I was hooked. And there is just sooo much content in the game and all of it feels achievable. That cash shop is not perfect but it could be way worse and it is in no way as bad as Archeage.

And name me an MMO with a better Combat System than BDO.

Nordavind breetoplay Yeah unfortunately I'm not on much these days, just for a minute every morning to get my daily gifts. Try to hit me up at 8:30 am EST and I'll see what I can do!

Xijit breetoplay the whole point was that doing it that way make most people feel completely overwhelmed so kinda bad advice IMO.
Also the systems aren't that complicated, you really don't need to do any guides for them, especially not learning it the overly drawn out way with the quests. It's the same problem EVE has. When your "tutorials" are twice the length of a regular game you're not that good of a teacher.

Hey! I just recently started playing Marvel Heroes! I care! I'm loving it so far. After months of game jumping, I've finally found something that might stick, at least game wise. Community wise I'm not sure yet, but I'm trying to catch someone from the MOP super group online so I can get an invite. If it has active players, that is.

I have really really started enjoying this game. RPing as a business owner, when you can see my workers walking up and down the map, it's just... it's awesome. I don't feel pressured to get into any raiding treadmill of dailies for loot. I have an alt that does my brewing once a day, hands out beer to my 30 person/ goblin/ giant staff and they make me trade packs. I RP for a few nights, then spend a day moving those trade packs to markets across the map. I've got goals, getting the noble wagon -eventually-, but there is no rush.

And yeah, the combat is fun. But I'm a sucker for crafting systems. At Processing Professional 5, I'm routinely on the leader board. Was top 10 for awhile, until I fell behind doing the RP thing. Scorpio Shirica is the name of my character, feel free to say hello if you see me at Heidel Inn.

Xijit The only deal I'll try to make of this is that it is the first "action mmo" combat system that has grabbed me so far. I would bet that most western MMO players have never touched C9 and cannot properly make the comparison.
I've played C9 briefly but could not remember it. Looking at videos I see the similarities. I would argue that there is a notable difference with BDO because it does this in what has been so far for me one seamless open world. Games like Vindictus or C9 didn't have the "full" MMO appeal that I tend to crave.
Also, BDO is the flavor of the month. This hyperbolic speak of games that may or may not do anything different always happens.
Apologies for coming off as dismissive in the first comment. Internet. Emotions.

and then I will completely disagree: take the Black spirit quests until it gives you your first boss fight (don't worry, it is almost a joke to solo) & at that point stop talking to the black spirit for a bit and go find the mayor of Velin as he starts you on a quest chain that will walk you though every system in the game ... eventually, when you feel comfortable with the production systems, pick up the black spirit quests and move on.

If you were on Uno, I have a guild that is decidedly not Boobs & Bongs, and you also would not be the first couple in guild ... I don't think you would be the third couple in guild.

TheGremmel Just a warning here, a whole bunch of those "extra" quests won't be available when you go back. Quests operate in a level range as far as I know, if you out-level quests however, new ones will be open when you go back. I am not sure how it relates to "story" quests, but I have experienced gaining a new level, and getting a story quest that I had to go back to a 'previous' area to complete.

Lobby based action MMO ... Take all of the open world elements out of BDO & put what is left into a Phantasy Star Online format.
Webzen still has it up and running if you want to take a look for yourself.

(the point)<-------------------------------->(you)
BDO's combat is nothing new or original, and the developers of BDO showed that you could pull it off pretty easily back in 2009 when C9 launched in Korea (almost a full year ahead of Vindictus).
Not that it is bad, and the point is not that it isn't the first game to have them ... Just that it is pretty sad that dingbats within the MMO industry are trying to make a big deal out of BDO having combat mechanics that should have been adopted over a decade ago.

breetoplay My recommendations: When you get sick of the bad voice acting, turn the voice volume slider down to 0. Do the reading when you feel compelled to. I don't "read" quest text or much flavor text in MMOs, but after I stopped hearing the awful sounds and translations coming out of the characters' mouths.
How would you feel if I said this game has been giving me a strong Elder Scrolls vibe ever since I started branching out and exploring the social systems with NPCs and unlocking of knowledge that will further give you the ability to talk and persuade NPCs into giving you more and more quests and perks and KNOWLEDGE? The cheesy persuasion games of Morrowind and Oblivion show up in their own form in BDO and it is probably better at what those try to do.

It is a messy game. This is consistent with all the good sandboxes I have ever played though. Around level 16-18 the combat on my sorceress started to REALLY click for me. I think this is my first action MMO that shows how the non-tab targeting style can work. I am just glowing with this game and that usually tends to set people up with weird expectations. Don't take my word for it, but if you can find the time to persevere to maybe the third hub I think you will see some interesting things going on in this game. I still feel like I am just scratching the surface too.
I always groan when people say you need to get x amount of hours into a game before it gets good, but I don't think it takes as long as most games since usually it is "get to the endgame or dont bother". Ok, I'm not going to press this more. I am not trying to influence or pressure you. I am not head over heels with this game at this moment and want to share my experience with someone I think could at least appreciate what this game has to offer.
(sorry)

Ill try to keep this short...

Guile suit - Well, If you want to be on par buy it. I'm all for developers making money continued support keeps the game going. Over half the game is crafting and resource management, so the pvp aspect can be dodged to a degree. I'm overly bothered by this drama of p2w.

Bree, As much as i'm enjoying BDO. If you don't have the time, as it looks. I think go back and give ESO a go with the hubby. It's more of a jump in do some story quests, lil crafting and jump out kinda game. BDO has so many things you can do and if you don't get the time you just get frustrated that you can't get it all done.

You guys are beating on BDO as it seems to much at start, to much happening. After you have learnt the ideas it's easy, I don't think you both have gotten enough thru it.
I think the game covers how to do things really well considering and you guys are having a go at it because it's giving you all the info onscreen at once. I'm confused..

A phrase like "oh I don't know what I'm do, there's to much information been thrown at me" comes to mind..

I find BDO to be a pretty great direction  in the way of the sandbox, but as for progressing in crafting and farming it really does a great job at giving themepark directions when learning how to use all these systems through questing. All you need to do when start playing is, talk to everyone, they will give you quests for everything to learn how to play. Even to the point of, cook this..point 1, point 2, put 3 meat, 4 eggs....have you ever seen it that easy? i'm level 33 and I'm still getting "tutorial" quests.

You guys confuse me sometimes. Tbh, I don't think you know what you want in a game anymore. Maybe you 2 are just being critics.

I agree as I started that way myself.  I picked up the main story line stater quest with Edan and then just followed the black spirit for a good amount of time.

If you try to do every quest you see, you will drive yourself batty.  The are profession specific quests that will send you down a long and winding rabbit hole solely to advance in that profession.
The cities may look like quest hubs, but they appear to offer up more quests later on as you advance in level, professions, and also NPC/town affinity.

It is funny how people are calling out the combat in BDO as revolutionary when it is a direct extention of the combat system in C9 (the last game that BDO's developers worked on), and that game started development in 2006-ish ...
Hell, the combat (mechanics) is actually kinda simplified from C9 ....

I pony so much, I'm on the pony leaderboards.  But that doesn't really say much because it's one of the grinder professions with a lot of time gates.  Just means I need a life =P

direpath Esoteric Coyote I agree with you on the community and sharing.  I don't mind free for all, but I love to share with people and I think it's a poor idea to prevent people from doing this.  It might prevent RMT, but I feel it hurts the community more.
You can only list a stud on the market every 6 hours, so it be great to have guild stables to share smexy studs for breeding purposes would be a great idea.

And yeah I think the majority of massively community is on Orwen.  I found that out after I picked a server, that's why servers are silly.  What can you do /shrugs

direpath Esoteric Coyote melissaheather That's probably better than my map from korea, which has spawns in hostile locations which I don't think really exist on NA, so thank you.  I know of and visit about 8 locations to steal all the pretty T2s, I have a circle I do and then snatch fruits and flowers for cooking.  Nom!

Esoteric Coyote  Only things that mildly get me are costume prices and lack of player trading. I don't want player trading full out as it would impact the economy, but it would be nice to have some means for guilds or friend to share their resources. I would love to see a guild trading or guild AH system so we can pool our resrouces. I would love to provide tools or wagon parts to my guildies and have them help me with food, horse parts, boats, etc.

Neither is a deal breaker but it is one aspect of building a community we are missing. For the sake of stopping RMT I just don't feel it is worth it.

Community wise, I turned off player names, left guildie names on and my guild is all I see and experience. Everyone else is just an NPC to me. My guild is family friendly (unfortunately for you and yours, on Orwen) and it is a pleasant place to play.

Love this game.

melissaheather Esoteric Coyote I'm more than happy to share tips, spawn locations, etc.   But you might want to wait until they allow you to loop paths, so you can auto run your horse while you sleep.  It's a massive grind to get high level females.  Right now I use the auto run, but I have to set the path every so often to run across the map.  I've been running between Velia and Trent.  Also horse tiers are capped at T6 right now, which is still an accomplishment, but if you breed high level T4s you have a chance at a T7 baby, which you can't get right now.

Will I play it for nearly 5 straight years like LOTRO?  Probably not.  But right now BDO is my game, life is good, and I actually finally have "my" game again where I don't dither about should I play tonight, I look forward to it. Been a long time coming since I've enjoyed a game this much - probably launch of SWTOR is only thing that I've enjoyed this much.

... also about the P2W discussion. Yeah BDO is a F2P game with an entrance fee. Thinking anything different is just naive. This was the first game since Archeage that could've easily been a subscription MMO without a cash shop. Could've been a much better designed game if that where the case.

I want to say you can totally come join me in BDO on Edan, but the majority of my play time is the below picture because I've become obsessed with horse breeding and I need to level my females for good chances at better females?  Sounds silly, but hey, it's what clicked with me.  As for BDO, sure there are quests, and you should do them.  But you aren't doing them for levels, you are doing them for skill points, contribution points, and inventory slots.  Most of your xp comes from doing things like killing mobs.  You can even level just by doing professions like fishing.  You get more labor points by discovering knowledge about the world by meeting people or talking with them.  BDO has a lot of interesting systems built into it that aren't apparent until you really dig in.  And there's some silly features that come out very grindy.  Like depending on your knowledge rank for a mob depends on it's loot and how much damage you do to it.  Rank C is the worst, you want Rank A, A+, or S.
http://imgur.com/xSn85r9

If anything kills my like for BDO it's either the PVP and the enhancement system for armor, the inability to trade with other people,  and finally the community.  The guild my husband I joined is all boobs and bongs, and the channel and RP chat is normally nothing, but trolls.  I'm feeling really out of place.  But that's true in most MMOs.

About the beginning of Black Desert. My only advice if you want to "just play" for the first few hours in the game, don't talk to any other NPC than what the black spirit points you to. Leave all the extra quests to go back to once you're bored of just killing things. Oh and turn off the "combo helper" and "video tutorials", they're both useless.

It would've been so much better if all the "contribution quests" which I think most of them are, where hidden behind the amity system. If they all had to be unlocked by that minigame it would be way less confusing.
