Final Fantasy XI ends its run on consoles

Raise a sword and salute Final Fantasy XI for its truly impressive run as a console MMO since 2002. The title is ending service on both the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 today as part of its spin-down into maintenance mode, although it will continue to operate on the PC. Console players had been encouraged to switch accounts and transfer their characters to the PC version to continue their journeys.

For those remaining in the game, Square-Enix has a treat in store with its April update next week. The patch will include the mount system, a repeat of the login campaign, and a new type of battle scenario with varying difficulty levels. Final Fantasy XI may be heading to mobile devices in the future, although the studio has not talked about that project for some time.
