Final Fantasy XI ends its run on consoles

Raise a sword and salute Final Fantasy XI for its truly impressive run as a console MMO since 2002. The title is ending service on both the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 today as part of its spin-down into maintenance mode, although it will continue to operate on the PC. Console players had been encouraged to switch accounts and transfer their characters to the PC version to continue their journeys.

For those remaining in the game, Square-Enix has a treat in store with its April update next week. The patch will include the mount system, a repeat of the login campaign, and a new type of battle scenario with varying difficulty levels. Final Fantasy XI may be heading to mobile devices in the future, although the studio has not talked about that project for some time.

To honor FFXI’s console run, share your favorite memories from Vana’diel in the comments!

Tons
of funny moments that had me crying.  My LS would laugh as I always fell
asleep during Dynamis.  I feel asleep in sky while we were fighting Kirin
and my fellow LS leader mpk’ed me.  When I was a noob player I was
standing in front of Sandy with some friends, I hear this rumble and I see at
the side of my screen this big orange thing.  I took off and zoned only to
see after I loaded in they were rolling because I ran from Titan lol.  The
crap I got from lvlin drg from so many people only to have me save countless
people and events from wipes.  I got a bunch of private messages over the
years from people asking how did I do X or thanking me.  Random players
who wanted to lvl drg was told to ask me for help.  Having one of the best
PLD’s at the time on our server make fun of me for coming drg to Sea only to
get a private message apologizing later because I saved us from a low man wipe
by keeping him alive.  I had mnk, nin, sam, smn, rdm, whm, bst.  Such fond memories with good friends.  I may play on PC eventually.

ThatLanteshGuy  Same here brother.  Lvlin drg actually made me a better player as I had to form my own parties and plan events because most didn’t take you if you were a drg.

Rest in peace, old friend.

Setting up my PS2 HDD and trying to navigate PlayOnline for the first time was the most complicated thing I’ve ever done in my life.

CHEERS TO FFXI! CHEERS TO SYNTHESPIANS of Ragnarok! The best group of people I know and grew up with!  FFXI was more then just a game, but it was the start of a wild ride of growing up and reaching out to people across the world.

Many of life’s best windfalls and experiences was in part to these great people that I spent my FFXI career with and I wish to thank Cecil, Shemi, Xell, Melk and Zen.  We’ve all parted ways and onto different paths in life, but the memories and recollections will stay gold forever.
I know I’ll be back on FFXI to finish the storyline someday, but for now I’m just happy to remember what it was back in the day.

thatchefdude delmontyb mourasaint There was (no sure if still is?) a free migration to PS4 for PS3 players. You lost your PS3 license, but if you have a PS4 who cares?
They’ve also explicitly stated that when they make an expansion that they just can’t make compatible with PS3, even if it’s the next one, they’ll cease making expansions for that platform.

Sufo A Dad Supreme Same also. I found myself today looking for yet another another to give me that thrill that FFXI did during it’s prime. I’m very saddened this, there is just nothing and will probably never be anything like FFXI again.

Damonvile I suppose if they allowed the 360 version to keep going maybe it could have one day been allowed on Xbox One via the backwards compatible program.

delmontyb mourasaint Speaking of which, they should learn from XI and no longer release future content on PS3, but offer free client download to migrate to PS4 for current PS3 players….

PS3 will hold back this game really bad just like PS2 did to XI, I mean it can barely stay at 60fps on PS4, but on PS3 XIV plays like crap and has horrendous pop-in

Damonvile It’s so old you could run it at 4k on a laptop from 2008

Ahh, my first MMO. Had it on the PS2 HDD too heh. Got it in that bundle thing they sold way back when. My greatest accomplishment was getting DRG to 75 during the height of the loldrg phase. And I did it all with one of these bad boys. Actually it was several because they kept breaking. :(

mourasaint It’s weird to explain, but FFXI and FFXIV share assets between each other.  They both exist in their own universe, but there’s lore in FFXIV that hints about FFXI. (Not like “timeline” lore, but call-outs to FFXI events as if in another universe.)
The same is true with FF: Tactics Advanced, with that world leading to FFXII, and Tactics A2 suggesting that FFXI exists as a game in that world.

SallyBowls1 Just circle of life, XV is a single player game. If SE would have want to be so vile, they had shut down XI when XIV or XIV:ARR came out.

Damonvile BalsBigBrother Flimflamberge Um I think that if I remember correctly there was some call from the FFXI community to do a proper port on to the PS3 when the console launched (also to phase out the PS2 version). However, at that point I believe SE were working on a secret project know as “Rapture” which turned out to be the crappy first iteration of FFXIV so I can understand why it never happened.

A Dad Supreme I’ve never found an MMO experience like FFXI many years past it’s prime. Will always love it.

BalsBigBrother Flimflamberge Damonvile Doesn’t that kind of suck as an mmo platform then ? I mean if I upgrade my PC it only makes playing the mmo better. If I buy the next console I can’t play my favorite mmo on it ?
It wouldn’t really matter for a normal game in any other genre really but mmos don’t seem like a good choice…..but I guess who am I kidding. Most ppl don’t last a month in a mmo anymore :P

Flimflamberge Damonvile I believe it would also work in the PS3 as long as you had one of the backwards compatible ones and did a bit of fiddling with some system patches.  I think one of my friends did it that way but it has been a few years so I may be mistaken.

I’d prefer to not use an adblocker since I’d like to support Massively, but if it continues like this it’d probably be a last resort for me.

SallyBowls1 XI is still operational. They just dropped some antiquated platforms.

I don’t know if the idea of starting again in FFXI on a mobile device excites me or crushes my soul.  The temptation to recapture that original feeling is great, but the basic game play of FFXI doesn’t really match the sporadic gaming style of mobile.

Most memorable moments….. The Dunes & Goblins! I miss my Blue Mage also :(

So many great moments grouping with players from all over the world using the auto translate for late night Japanese parties, but mainly the fact players grouped and TALKED while doing so!

It feels as if it was just yesterday I was reading about how addictive FFXI was, on Electronic Gaming Monthly. So way, waaay back when.
Impressive run. Wish I had gotten into it back then.

mourasaint they are not the same. FF XIV : ARR is the current version which runs on PS3 and PS4 along with PC. :)

Could you play ff11 on a newer console or once they move up to the next generation you still have to break out the old one if you wanted to play ?

Still my favorite MMO, despite not playing it seriously since around 2012. My linkshell did have a mini-reunion a few months ago where we finished out the new storyline before we parted ways.

Nothing will replace the fun, the nonsense, and the drama of 2003-2010’ish though.

To those who are old schoolers in the genre, or FF fans, without a doubt, it was the MMO of the decade for 2000-2010…..
In overall scope nothing came close…..

End of an era truly….

It never had the commercial success of WoW, but it was undoubtedly as important to the genre, and also was the first widely sucessful Asian MMO in NA and EU markets….

Elirion  Oops I need more coffee. I originally parsed that as “at the time, son” and thought disinheriting someone just because you didn’t think they healed you enough was harsh, even for here.

Off topic, but every once in a while, when I open a page on Massively on Chrome on Android, it redirects me shieldviruses.com where I’m told my phone is infected with a virus (apparently from viewing porn sites, lol) and that I have to install their app to get rid of it. I know mop doesn’t condone this type of advertising, so I hope this helps you guys get rid of this annoying ad!

Is it more than coincidence – or just circle of life – that XI departs as XV is announced?

My first MMO and always the standard by which I judge other MMOS by. I started on the 360 wi th one account which my entire family shared. This quickly developed into an account for each family member, four in total. We had lots of fun playing together, my wife, two sons, and me. I’ll bet may people would be surprised to learn that their healer was my 7 year old, at the time, son. He was pretty good. :)

I will always be grateful for the Xbox 360 version of FFXI as it got me into mmo’s and showed me the best they can offer also sadly the worst. I did transition onto a pc fairly soon,  funny thing is I could never play FFXI with mouse and keyboard and continued using a controller even on pc, only using a compact  wireless keyboard for chatting.
I wouldn’t be here now commenting on the genre without the console, will let you decide if that is a good thing or not :p

(wish I could post some pics from my FFXI days but I lost them to a hardrive crash) :-(
