29 sassy insults for the e-thugs who are DDOSing Shroud of the Avatar

Sadly, this one isn’t an April Fools’ Day joke, or if it’s a prank on the part of the perpetrators, it’s not a funny one.

Shroud of the Avatar’s Starr Long told players earlier today that the game has been struggling with a DDOS attack since early this morning.

“Unfortunately we are under a Denial of Service attack from at least one source (perhaps multiple) that started at 3:00 AM CDT. We are blocking them as quickly as we can. If you are getting ALTAIR9000 disconnect messages that is the cause. We apologize for the inconvenience and we are working hard to solve this issue as quickly as we can.”

This isn’t the first time the game’s been DDOSed on the eve of a major launch; almost a year ago, e-thugs decided to screw with the Release 17 launch. Release 28 began rolling out yesterday.

This kind of idiotic behaviour is basically external form of ganking and corpse camping.

It’s a quality game and the community that plays it (I do) will understand. We as gamers should always back those who create the games we love and when they have trouble, the best we can do is be patient and show our support.

Rustybladez Armsbend  Eh, I’m not a fan of the game at this point… but there are those who do enjoy it.  So it does have at least some point, even if as a game it is by definition unnecessary.
Honestly, anyone could well say the same about any games you like (or any game.)  Why would you go there?  That’s as crude and scumbaggery as these DDoS attacks.

My response at this point is that I am so against the idiots that DDoS that I immediately lower my opinion of anyone doing it to the second lowest tier of the scum of humanity.  The only thing I have to say to or about them is ‘Go away and leave the rest of us alone morons.’

Pashgan reuscherf I use Sucuri & Cloudflare, really depends on the strength of the attack.

reuscherf How could monitoring mitigate DDoS? Meawhile there is a great semi-free service for mitigation – CloudFlare. Probably MOP might want to use it as well.

In case anyone is wondering what I’m talking about here is a simplified chart I’ve posted before.

Gah, this crap gets so old. The major backbone providers need to really start working closer together with IP’s and various other tech companies at all levels to really mitigate this crap. I’m tried of script kiddies with anger issues lashing out with DDoS tools anytime they get their underwear in a bunch.

BigMikeyOcho Pointless to try and ransom someone from being DDOS’ed most of the
time (in a sustained fashion), as DDOS attacks only last as long as it
takes to block all the incoming infected connections, bigger the botnet,
and the poorer the security software and manpower on the other end of
the attack, the longer it takes to completely nullify the DDOS attempt.
The
only way a ransom would really work is if it was used at key moments to
cause major frustration, such as a launch date, where the company would
rather pay the criminals to save face rather than spend a day or two
disabling the DDOS attack.

As someone that runs a retail website that had this happen, just for someone’s fun, it really sucks. I have to pay a good bit more each month to additional levels of security and monitoring.

Elirion I think if you’re child is down in the basement playing on a computer with access to the internet, you might have some parenting issues already,

So who benefits from a DDOS? I’m assuming it goes like this: Someone who has some money pays the owner of a botnet time in DDOS’ing a particular website/service (See: that kid that DDOS’d Neverwinter/STO not long ago). So, the owners of the botnet are benefiting, anyway, and they could probably care less who the target is. The one who paid for it to happen… I guess they get some kind of smug satisfaction out of it? Maybe? But since their time/money will eventually run out, they’re not really making a difference at all and will be easily forgotten. Just causing some mild inconvenience for some people.
Maybe the owners of the botnet could demand ransom to stop a DDOS. I believe I’ve heard of that strategy, too. Still dick behavior, but at least that would have more of a purpose to it than just a kid with a credit card.

Parents need to check on what their kids are doing down in the basement more often. They need more supervision and fewer Red Bulls and ho ho’s.

DDOs happens to just about all online games anymore. Sad to hear.

I stopped playing this game about 4 updates ago…. still waiting for the combat to feel meaningful, but otherwise some great ideas and concepts being put into it!
