Black Desert’s Musa and Maehwa class have arrived

If your enjoyment of a game hinges upon how many different classes you can choose between, Black Desert is getting just a bit more enjoyable today with the addition of the Musa and the Maehwa. The two classes are gendered mirrors of one another, with the Musa focusing a bit more on AoE attacks whilst the Maehwa emphasizes single combat, but both pair melee combat with archery.

Obviously, the new classes are the major focus of this particular update, but players can also look forward to new costumes in the cash shop, improved travel loop functionality, and several monster changes included alongside the new classes. But really, aren’t new classes enough for you? The servers should be up right now, so if you don’t have to worry about something like school or work, you can try ’em out right now; we’ll be hosting our own stream of the game today at 2:00 p.m. EDT.

bayspoon Apollymi I logged in again last night.  I had made two toons, tamer and sorceress?  The sorceress was gone which is too bad since I’d milked a lot of cows with her and had buckets of milk I planned to sell.  Anyway, was working on some quests and sort of reading general chat when someone started bragging about killing all the 45+ folks who were AFK fishing.  And I thought, this is why I don’t want to play this type of game.  First off, the jerk who does this and second who brags about it.  Oh well.

Loopstah The best way to learn the systems is to just jump right in.  I was very confused by the worker system and crafting in general so I decided I wanted to make steel fishing rods (that I later discovered I can’t even use yet) and went to it.  There are a lot of systems, but none of them are individually all that complicated.

Loopstah One key thing to keep in mind when doing the quests intended to teach systems: when the quest is given to you, and the info that shows in the quest helper on-screen, details are very minimal.  BUT, if you open the quest log the full quest description will have nicely detailed steps explaining how to complete the quest.  It’s invaluable for some of those tutorial-ish quests, especially when it comes to cooking or manufacturing.

Loopstah Honestly just sit down and put in the time, watch tutorials on youtube, etc.  that’s what I had to do on a couple of details.  This site has had some great articles and how-to’s as well.

Wratts those sad-thousand-yard-stare-I-seen-things goblins that mingle with human population are clearly a persecuted underclass.  Makes you wonder exactly what they did to be rejected from the society of goblin-kind…

Loopstah Just ask in the general chat, man. I’ve seen just about every question you could possibly ask in there. Otherwise, use Google. I can understand the frustration but I think you owe it to yourself to get over that hump and enjoy what the game has to offer.

Loopstah You definitely owe it to yourself to give it another go.
It doesn’t do a great job an explaining anything, even combat with the videos. But what I did is do every single gosh darn “quest” you can see and avoid moving on until you feel like an area is all but exhausted.
All of the game’s system are taught through this method… and heck, there wasn’t even a farming Tutorial until around level 20-ish!
Just do it all, and understanding will come.

Wratts I logged in over lunch and there were a LOT of them around.  I think I will roll up a witch or something while everyone else is playing samurai.

The goblins around Velia are having a really bad day.
I think I’ve actually heard a few of them saying “what the hell man?  That was a really unnecessarily complex combination you used to wipe us out.”

I’m tempted to give the game another try. I was really put off by the systems not being properly explained, and i’m hoping if i do another character from scratch, i may catch some of the tips/hints/tutorials that i may have missed in the first pass… Any other ideas or tips for learning about non-combat stuff and trading?
I just feel like i am missing out so much of the game when i’m focusing on questing and exploration, and i would hate to have it bite me in the ass later on.

Beacon Lethality karmamule Darthbawl I think this is where BD drops off on some of the sandbox promise…
Though, all of my crafting and processing has gone directly into supporting my fishing and trade carriers! I’ve completely ignored my combat gear, haven’t really replaced/changed anything since week 1 and I’m not pursuing the +15 grind at all, doesn’t seem necessary for my play style.
That said, they are a sneeze away from some awfully meaningful non-combat gameplay! I like the things I’ve heard from them in interviews about group harvesting, maritime trade, and so on!

An actual quiver for the bow! I think this is the first time I’ve seen one in a game, as opposed to the bow just free floating on someone’s back. Still some things I could be nitpicky about, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Lethality karmamule Darthbawl As for an altruistic element, clearly there are lots of non-combat elements already in the game, but ultimately, the non-combat elements of the game tend to be there to reinforce combat (craft better gear, farm food to boost combat stats/regen, etc.) It would be cool if they added layers to some of those systems that culminated in some other way, like organize crafting guilds that could collectively construct a new city in the game world for everyone to share. Think the semi-open style of house crafting in Skyrim: you can build a fixed set of things, but you can make them in the combinations that appeal to you as a player.

Or give crafters control over elements of the game world at the level of conveniences. Hate going around that gorge? We can build a bridge over it for you, but you pay us a small tax in silver to use it.
Or give carebears powerful defense skills that can only be used collectively. Then they can travel in packs to defend other players from gankers and rank up points for every player they save. I would so love that. OMG I’m getting excited just thinking about it. I want Care Bear Stare in BDO.

Lethality karmamule Darthbawl Yeah, I’m really interested in that, too. There are so many systems in the game that I feel like no one fully understands. I actually like that. It makes the world feel real.
Someday, I hope to figure out what investing energy in nodes actually does, in detail. I’d also like to know what’s really going on in the amity game when the success odds of a particular character change from one round to the next.

Ten10K you can put nearly all of your skills on the hotbar and press a number key to use them. You don’t have to do combos. You can also reassign keys – for example, I reassign F to the side mouse button so I can easily kick with it.

Can’t wait to get home…  This game has already been worth the money.  Solid start, good game, good content drops, more classes.  Thumbs up Daum.  Keep it up!

My daughter gave me her 7-day trial key.  I’m not sure I’m that thrilled and am happy I didn’t pay for the game.  Have 5 more days and need to try out a few more classes.  Maybe one of them will inspire me.

Black Desert is not simple in the slightest, and seems to put off a lot of “look shiny!” gamers (like the ones that play FFXIV).  So I ‘m not sure where you got that impression from.
Also, combat may be a little bombastic but it’s actually a very deep skill-based system that was a long time coming for an MMO. It’s super satisfying as you build skill and begin ti pull off combos, etc. (This is coming from a die-hard tab-target rules based fan!)

karmamule breetoplay ScottLeyes I will make sure he sees this — I know he has reader mail piling up, and it’s exams for him too. I can’t wait to have him back. In the meantime, MJ will be streaming some Maehwa goodness this afternoon. :D

Didn’t like the combat Street fighter II esk.. Sorry I want a hotbar with all my abilities on it .. Not have to hold a combo of buttons to do an abilities.
The UI is plain and simple like every other Asian MMo
And endgame has no dungeons to go through just fishing and PVP..
No thanks.
Shows the mentality of today’s youth gamer.. That they can be swept up and pulled in by somthing so simple as ark, dayz, and now BDO.. Guess the future will being everyone will be tending the rabbits George.
I’ll stick to FFXIV
Let me know when they make it possible to put any and every abilities on your hotbar and exacute them with clicking or 1-x
Thx
Bah

Beacon karmamule Darthbawl Lethality Agreed on both counts!

I guess the Elder Scrolls devs think the main storyline is already so heroic-savior focused that they concentrate minor quest lines on the darker side, but I still would like to have some non-combat focused storylines, maybe a traders guild, or servants of Mara or something?

In terms of BDO deeper narratives and less combat-focused side story arcs would be really wonderful to tie all their great non-combat systems together.  And, it would provide a more enjoyable and cohesive way to learn them.

karmamule Darthbawl Lethality The whole knowledge system is really pretty intriguing.
I am still trying to figure out of the character or knowledge changes based on if you know members, or if members know each other, etc.
Would be neat if that was fully dynamic, so earning favor with one NPC would influence how it goes with another that knows him/her…

Beacon karmamule Darthbawl Lethality I really like that idea… I think the stories and setting in BDO are really fresh despite their outward appearance to the contrary, but having some narrative in there like that would be great!

karmamule Darthbawl Lethality I wish they gave out more of those gift coupon thingies. Some of the most fun I have in the game is giving those to people who give me a helping hand in world chat.
On a related note, I know people really like assassin/dark brotherhood type of content, but I wish there were parallel storyline-based systems for us carebears with altruistic/empathic themes.

Darthbawl Lethality Or just talking to people to see what deeper friendships bring. I love that too….  My Black Spirit is very upset with my still-low-level character right now because I ignore all its nasty suggestions and spend my time doing non-combat things.

So much of the combat in this game is so frenetic (to me). I hope they release a few more “slow” classes sometime. My favourite class is almost always the caster-summoner class, which this game doesn’t really have (tamer is more melee-with-pet). I like to stand well back from the fight and orchestrate hordes of pets with different abilities.

Spectacular game. If you haven’t played it yet, now is a great time. Not a true sandbox, but way more of a virtual world with actual progression paths that don’t include combat. Forget trying to play it like other games, just go in and enjoy the world and characters. My .02.
