Exile Online invites you into a dark cyberpunk world

Jonesing for a nice bite of cyberpunk in your MMO diet? Then you might want to keep one augmented eye on Exile Online, an upcoming sandbox that is jacked in to all sorts of cyberpunk feels.

Exile Online has a wide variety of ambitious features, including extensive player housing, a mix-and-match skill system, an intricate economy, implants, politics, and, of course, a futuristic dystopia of high technology and low morals. “Life on Erebus is cheap,” the devs explained. “The wary citizen must always keep an eye out, lest they become just another statistic, crushed under the feet of monumentally powerful and corrupt mega corporations and bureaucratic agencies.”

While the pre-alpha isn’t yet accessible by the public, the team recently made an apartment demo available to all. The game has been in development from at least 2014. A Kickstarter campaign is in the works for some time this year.

We have created a development roadmap page on Trello. This allows everyone to see what we have already created, what we are working on and what we have still to do in our current phase. Have a gander. Any questions feel free to ask :)

We have swapped out the intro video with a much higher quality version. Turns out the video codec we used to encode it first time around sucked and wouldnt show the true 60fps frame rate that it should have.

We think the quality is massively improved over what it was originally.

We just passed the £1000 mark. Thank you so much Exiles. It is wonderful to know that people will want to play this game and be a part of it from such an early part of its development.

Our Kickstarter is now live and active. Lets see what we can do. Any shares and likes on social media will greatly help. If you have any friends or fellow gamers that are into scifi or cyberpunk give them a headsup.

All backers are greatly appreciated. Thanks to all you Exiles out there.

arsaidh Prometheus_Exile With what we have planned for character customisation, it will be highly unlikely any 2 players will ever look the same on your screen at any one time.

arsaidh There will indeed be a day and night cycle…and changing weather patterns. You will be able to change the appearance of your character to the extreme degree. You can have a full cyborg body if that pleases you.

Will there be a day/night cycle or is the world always gloomy with the fiery sky? It might be interesting to see the day time! I love a good day night cycle!

And will we be able to customize our own body parts? I want a cyborg arm! Seriously though, I know you are doing the Kickstarter soon to get the new characters developed and in, but what type of player customization’s are you planning?

GeekySharp Why is that? It is not just the game engine that makes a good game, but the developers! I have seen this with many games and engines- all have good games and all have bad games. For a small company just coming out of R&D, they have a fairly high success rate honestly.
I played Faxion, and I was so sad when Disney bought them out and shut down that game. It was always populated and tons of fun. I wish the old devs could being it back!
Im in another private beta and one more alpha, and both of those games are really fun! Played one alpha that was..err.. not fun and did not look good at all!

Repop was fun, though it was buggy, I do not think it was HeroEngines fault, as all other games and servers stayed up!

ellapinella theeknighthood I dont think anyone expected it to be an MMO. But hopefully just a damn good cyberpunk game :)

ellapinella Prometheus_Exile You will be able to hack things for sure. Security cameras, robots, turrets, computer systems etc. You will also be able to directly interface your mind with the Cybernet and walk around in that digital realm. As to coding/crafting there will be a visually similar gameplay feature but without the need to type things in. Rather you just place items into other items to change their effect on the world.

Prometheus_Exile Will we be able to code(craft) our own programs using shells and applying those programs into things we use or into the world?
Can we actually hack things?

Are there magical elements?

theeknighthood Well, I wouldn’t expect it to be an MMO. Maybe a limited multiplayer if anything. Unless of course, the community finds a way to make it more than a limited multiplayer if it turns out to be a worthy enough (crosses fingers) game.

My hearts says yes again. My brain… not so much. It needs some style and edge. Just not feeling this one. All the best though, maybe I’ll warm to it later?

We have had a nice little resurgence of cyberpunk games lately but I feel like they are typically top down view so I am happy to see one that’s full 3d. Will definitely be keeping an eye on this one.

Prometheus_Exile That’s a long way off the concept art. I hope they plan to bring up to the level and style of the concept art, otherwise it might end up just being a forgettable generic MMO.

I seem to have missed this. I shall investigate further. There’s something to be said for a retro-cyberpunk setting, all chromed and futuristic-as-seen-by-the-80s feel. But it has to play like it’s in the modern day.

Prometheus_Exile Gave the apartment demo a go. I’m not going to speculate on ‘what may be’, but would like to bring up something that I instantly noticed with ‘what we have’. Will the camera always be at the level it’s at? It seemed a little low. Chairs seemed to be taller than ‘me’. It all looked about the correct ratio to everything around (height of the rooms to size of furniture, etc), but from a child’s perspective.
That said, I’m interested to see more as it comes out.

The mantra of Cyberpunk is, as I’ll bet you’re all well aware, ‘high-tech, low-rent’. I’d like to see the UI reflect this. If it could look a little grimier it would be a major plus in my book. Like something pulled out of a San Angeles fleamarket.

Nicco2D Indeed there are many failures and not nearly all of them are MMO’s. Creating any video game is about mitigating risk, planning, adapting to unforeseen challenges and spending money wisely. Now that we have your attention, it is up to us to prove ourselves.

Video maybe?
Although I already see 20 hotkeys/cooldowns to track = bad design. I hope there is a macro to stick all combat skills to a single button like it’s done in Rift.

Sounds very promising on paper, but with it being developed on the Hero Engine, I won’t touch it with a ten foot barge pole.

You had me at ‘mix-and-match skill system’. Ok, that’s a lie, you had me at cyberpunk :D That perfect mix of modern and sci-fi in my book. For the first time in a long, long time I am really excited for a game in the making.
I see some mention Syndicate below, and that was great. But my best memory of cyberpunk gaming is the TCG Chron X (worlds fist online TCG!). That had great lore and the first few card sets amazing artwork.

When I read “kickstarter” related to a new MMO I suddenly remember all the fails of these years and lose interest about the game.
