Rumor: TERA destined for Xbox One, PS4 console ports

We’ve updated the end of this post with En Masse’s statement to Massively OP.

Is TERA one of the MMORPGs announcing a leap to the console market this year? MMO Culture’s report this morning suggests that it just might be. New job postings on a South Korean recruiting board indicate that studio Bluehole is on the hunt for a “Technical Lead role to lead the porting project of Bluehole’s globally successful PC MMORPG title TERA into PS4 and Xbox One […] Bluehole is expanding rapidly into mobile, console, and even for VR.”

We’ve reached out to En Masse (Bluehole’s western subsidiary) for a statement and will update when we know more.

Source: MMO Culture
Update: En Masse has sent Massively OP a statement neither confirming nor denying work on a console port.

“While En Masse doesn’t speculate on rumors, our parent company Bluehole is always exploring new and exciting avenues with their games. There is no official announcement at present to make about the future of the TERA franchise, but we look forward to continuing our adventures in the world of TERA as much as our fans do.”

Rohirrim I’ll still use my PC. But allow controllers with a good UI on PC, and I’ll connect my PC to my TV and it all works.

Good for them.  Surprised they hadn’t made the transition to consoles sooner.

Neial5546 Microsoft has more than agreed. They actually popped the question to Sony themselves. It’s Sony who’s dragging their feet now.

Estranged Leilonii The PC market is flooded, and more importantly, I think the PC market of gamers are eventually going to die out anyway. Consoles are less intimidating to casual gamers than PCs, what with needing to learn how to tweak settings and such to make a game work decent on a PC. Aside from that, most AAA developers are developing their games primarily for consoles these days anyway, with the PC ports making it in to the show almost as a messy, bug filled Beta version.

TERA would actually be extremely well suited for a console MMO, I think.

That is totally awesome!  I’m on PC, but many of my family and friends have already migrated to console for FFXIV, DCUO, The Division, Overwatch, etc.  I have to admit, what with all the rampant hacking, cheating and botting on PC, I’m leaning that way myself.

Neo_Wolf I bought a 2TB HDD for ~$80 and threw it into my PS4, 500gb is a joke when most AAA games take up 40-70gb each.

Leilonii SoMuchMass FFXIV does it by giving you hotbars where holding R2 or L2 and then pushing a face or D-pad button casts something.  The down side is you play the game with your finger cramping up from permanently holding down a trigger button.  This picture explains it.  When you don’t hold a trigger, X is select, triangle jump, directional pad scrolls through targets, etc.  Option or Start basically brings up a UI that has all the little System buttons in the bottom right, which is cumbersome as all heck to navigate.  Thanks to whatever website popped up on Google search that I stole this screenshots from.  I used Tera’s controller stuff once, and don’t remember how it worked.

It makes no sense to port to 360/ps3, not only old but it doesn’t use x86 architecture. Ps4 and X1 does so makes so much sense to port it over to there especially since UE3 is supported there too

If they were going to do it, the time has passed. What little money their overlords allowed them to spend has been invested in the Steam launch. Now, if Steam manages to save the game, then a console port is possible but I doubt it. NCSoft is looking to recover their investment since the game cost hundreds of millions to develop and it has yet to turn a profit.

Thats great news! More MMOs for consoles! After ESO and FFXIV, I will be able to also enjoy Tera, sitting comfortable to my couch with just a controller at hand! I hope more MMOs port to consoles. FFXIV, with many spells and tab target system did it and it did it amazingly good. So any MMO can do it.

Neial5546 FFXIV is tab target, and a slow one at that. They’re probably the only game that can get away with that. The limitations of consoles mean that they’d be at a massive disadvantage in action combat games which is why most put them on separate servers.

That’s because MS made that a rule which they just changed thier stance on. I think we’ll be seeing a lot more crossplatform games in the near future.

Maybe Wildstar should look into this as well. They can’t have many lives left.

Leilonii hardy83 Husvik I’m just talking about the actual mechanics of the game working on a console, I’m not talking about cross-play or non-cross-play at all.

I just don’t see some of the BDO mechanics working well on consoles.

Estranged hardy83 Leilonii When I say MMOs, I mean open world MMOs. If we start talking about lobby based or instanced based MMOs, we may as well start throwing in games like Call of Duty and Battlefield.
I don’t consider Destiny an MMO by “traditional” definitions. It is technically an MMO, but it’s mainly instanced based and not really open world.

And yes, games like FFXIV and DCUO have shown how good cross-play can be, yet so many companies seem to lazy to do it.

Correct, as a perfect example of limitations, Xbox 360 Destiny owners could not even play with Xbox 1 Destiny players. they all had separate servers.

Sorry, meant to say PS4 as well. I can see ESO allowing PC and consoles to play together if Microsoft ever agrees to allow cross play support with Sony.

Neial5546 Yeah, but the pickings are slim.  Can also play on the PS4 and PC, which is a much better option.  LOL

hardy83 Estranged Leilonii FFXIV can be played on the PC and PS4, with the same characters.  That is a HUGE deal for me.  DCUO has been an amazing success.  Destiny is a MMO-light.  Warframe is solid.

Ummmm FFXIV plays with PS3 and PC players so no not all console MMOs have their own servers.

Leilonii
Guest

hardy83 Husvik Leilonii None of that would matter because console games always get their own servers, so they’d only be playing with players who have the same limitations.

hardy83
Guest
hardy83

Husvik Leilonii How well would that game work on consoles though, since a lot of the mechanics require the game being on at all times. I mean I suppose it’s possible, but it wouldn’t have features that the PC version has (such as being able to minimize it in the taskbar to reduce resources needed for it)

Estranged Leilonii Possibly flooded, but also console being a fairly fresh platform for MMOs. Last gen MMOs were pretty limited because of terrible hardware (see Defiance).

It only takes one or two to do it and succeed to then tempt everyone else to move. In this case it was probably World of Tanks, Neverwinter and ESO.

They see them flourishing in a fairy non-flooded market in terms of MMOs and want in on that action.

Leilonii Black Desert as well i would think is probably right behind, it has massive gamepad support too (i think i remember), plus the combat in that one would be perfect for consoles.

SoMuchMass Leilonii I don’t know, I haven’t played with a controller. I just know its been compatible and people do it. But people also play FFXIV with a controller and that game has way more keys than TERA does.

Neo_Wolf 1TB is pretty standard now for new bundles, there are still some 500GB ones but most new console bundles are 1Tb, hopefully soon that will change to 2TB.

I bought my PS4 at launch and put a 2TB HDD in it right away….

Ive never understood how or why ppl did it but tera has always supported a controler. I just assumed they had some things still bound to the keyboard, like inventory and played that way.

If they just put out an ad in SKorea I would say 2017 is more likely.

I think console manufacturers are going to have to start including far lerger base HDD’s in their consoles if they plan to keep porting MMO’s to consoles :)

Leilonii How do you keybind all the keys?  And also manage things like inventory?  Tera uses action combat (probably my favorite MMO combat system) but unlike other action MMOs it doesn’t limit the abilities to 5-10 like other action combat games.

Leilonii Right, a game easy to play with a controller.

The executives have figured out the PC market is flooded.

Leilonii

Not a bad idea. It’s been playable with a gamepad since the start so this makes sense. I hope this extra money gained from this will be used to make the game as good as it was the first year or so. They’ve lost their way.
