The Stream Team: Preparing Storm for Marvel Heroes' Cosmic Midtown

For the most part, MassivelyOP's MJ just loves going into Marvel Heroes and blasting things with her super powers and reveling in the loot explosions. However, to fully experience the game, you have to kit out your hero and participate in the higher-level content. MJ has yet to do that on her favorites, so today she's bringing a guru on board to discuss what is needed for different heroes to make it through the Cosmic Midtown trial. Tune in live at 9:00 p.m. for some tips on getting Storm ready for the trial.

What: Marvel Heroes
Who: MJ Guthrie
When: 9:00 p.m. EDT on Monday, July 25th, 2016

The show is over now, but we've embedded it here just for you. Don't forget to check out past streams and playlists posted to our videos collection!

Hey MJ. Sorry I missed the stream (it is a timezone thing), but a couple of things:

1. You should totally attach the snowflake visual to storm's costume, so you still get the swirl (it is bound to storm anyway). Your guide fellow didn't go over the costume stuff, but when going for the cosmic trial, I recommend making sure you have good "core" and Crit damage on all 4 slots.

2. Minor thing, but your Storm isn't using a relic at all? Most relics only provide a small benefit (health + some damage). Recommended for Storm would be Gibborim - looks like a hand(to increase your spirit pool), Atlantis - looks like a fork(everyone recommends this for all characters because it provides critical damage) or if you are doing harder content Lemuria - looks like...er... a circle with two bar thingies(provides life on hit).

3. Artifacts and blessings, as these are tradeable, you might want to ask around for some better artifacts, if I happened to be online at the same time as you, I would give you a spare advanced Phoenix feather, and a spare Hand of Doom. The teaching credentials is one of storms best in slot, so well worth spending the 100 odin marks to get a blessing on that. Everyone recommends putting a blessing of Hela on(all your artifacts), and if you are trying to maximise your damage, it is well worth it. Your Advanced Metasensory is still one of the better artifacts as that +1 to all abilities and damage rating is well needed. It has been superseded in the 'meta' by the Skrull flag, but I didn't see one of them in your inventory in the stream, and I have yet to see one, so I assume they don't drop frequently.

Lastly don't let this stop you having fun with the character! A few minutes equiping items and doing enchants isn't really fun, but it is only a few minutes (depending on whether you can locate stuff in your stash quickly :P)

Next MH stream is going to be different: major patch is coming in Wednesday(-Friday) - with level and difficulty scaling.

I've always hated these kinds of dps gates to more difficult content.  From the stupid PoJustice trials in EQ to stupid WoW stuff, it always favours specific classes and builds, and is really no reflection at all on how ready you are for the content except to show that you are willing to grind your way to the specific build/gear to get through the trial.

The content itself should be the gate.  If it's too hard, you should get destroyed... if you're sneaky and/or can play particularly well in a non-dps role, then why shouldn't you be allowed to go get killed vs the hard stuff?

Big meh to trials!

@flatline4400 I haven't watched this yet so I cant comment on how MJ did or what advice she was given but some back ground to give you an idea as to why the trial is in place and why its needed.

Patrol zones such as midtown are open zones that anyone can enter the zone where you fight mobs and bosses who give decent loot, with the zones themselves scaling up every few levels during the levelling process until you get to max level 60 when you used to be able to go straight into the cosmic versions but now you can't until you pass the trail.  Cosmic versions are a little different, they are a lot harder and designed for geared level 60 players and they give a lot of really good loot for boss kills.

A lot of people ignored the geared part and only saw the level bit so the cosmic version did act as you suggested in that they did destroy folks who were unprepared especially during boss fights but this left the geared folks who were prepared to struggle on. The thing is the under geared folks would often as not sit on their death screen waiting for the boss to be killed before respawning and collecting the loots they had not earned.

The dev team put this trial in place after the players asked for something to prevent this situation happening.

While the trial can be a bit  of a pain for some of the heroes it does mean that the cosmic content is for the most part working as intended these days, most can contribute to the fights and be suitably rewarded for it (MJ will have a nightmares about loot management if she gets through the trials hehe)

@flatline4400 Even support heroes (whatever few exist) like Sunspot-tank Rogue, Colossus, Thing and Heal Dr. Strange can output enough DPS to destroy the trial, with some basic gearing.  And getting gear now is even more trivial, since Hightown drops a crapton of uniques, plus after the Defense rework heroes are a lot sturdier and not all of them need good costume cores to soak damage. You should only have trouble with the trial if the design of your favorite hero is severely dated (i.e. Starlord, Storm, X23 among others), and it is true that getting through is a struggle even with good gear.

It might not be the perfect solution, but it's kinda working. Cosmic Patrols since they added this are fast and fun, with bosses dieing sometimes even faster than the Normal versions, and if there's few people in the zone, you can count on that other person to actually hold his own instead of insta-dieing to Crossbones. And the normal versions are populated decently as well, either by fresh 60s or by people looking to do their dailies/weekly.

And good news: in the next (I think) patch you should be able to zone into the trial through the waypoints in hubs (Challenge Tab), so no more running through Midtown to the portal.

@Tithian

dude i got both Storm and x-23 through the trial, Storm was only my 2nd hero to do so, I had maybe 1.5k omega and joke gear at the time
please only comment on what you know for a fact

@malahide Aren't the other heroes significantly easier though, especially the newer ones? That was what I was trying to point out, not that those two are impossible to get through.
