Champions Online fights off giant monsters while offering lifetime sub discount

When massive monsters attack town, who you gonna call? No, not them, their specialty is in a completely different field. You're best off dialing up a handful of superheroes and offering them bonus rewards and currency for some abnormal mercenary work.

From now through January 11th, Champions Online is running its giant monster attack event, giving players a chance to earn 30% more tokens, rare costume pieces, and additional recognition. To help with the effort, cosmic bosses will respawn twice as fast as normal.

If you're a devoted Champions player and want to roll the dice on the game being around for a while to come, you might be interested in the current sale on the MMO's lifetime subscription. Through the 12th, the lifetime sub is 33% off its normal price tag of $300, taking it down to around $200.

They would sell a shit load of those lifetime subs if they put them on an easy payment plan.

They scared me away for good with their current "Free To Play" implementation.

I bought a lifetime sub to CO a couple of years ago and never regretted it. Sure, the gameplay is mediocre at best, but what makes the game shine for me is the character creator. It absolutely cannot be beat. I'd even say it was better than City of Hero's character creator. CO is also the game that got me into RP, so I'll always have a soft spot for it. I hope it continues to chug on.

@avs2324 Character creators sadly are the ONLY thing Craptic do well.

When I was a teenager this kid told me about something he does called a jump and run, where him and his freinds would beat up a random guy and take his money. I said "They have a word for that, it's called mugging."

For some reason this "Lifetime Membership" reminded me of the confusion.

Honestly who would even buy a lifetime sub at this point?

Neo_Wolf
Neo_Wolf

@Sorenthaz Depends on the game..I certainly don't regret my LOTRO one, I only semi regret my Star Trek Online one and my Champions Online one paid for itself..but then ceased to have any intrinsic value in definieable entertainment.

1) A lifetime sub for Champions Online cost $200 at launch. So I'm not sure how this is considered a discount.

2) Purchasing a lifetime sub for an MMO that's been in maintenance mode for over 5 of the 7 years that it's been in existence just doesn't sound like a good deal to me.

Champions Online, listen. Please stop drunk-texting me passionate press-releases, and calling at 4 a.m. telling me you want to get back together.

I bought your lifetime sub when we first met, sight unseen, because you said you were born in the City of Heroes.

That's on me, I know. and I'm not blaming you, but we never made each other very happy. There was always tension between what I hoped for from the relationship, and what you thought I should want.

We're over now, Champions Online, and I wish you well, but we're done.

to be honest i think to buy it for over a year because i think lifetime worth it.

but..after all the comment over 2016 i didn't buy it yet.

-also thought to buy startrek but im more into the ground pve than spaceship so i pass.

@JamesCrow

James -- I bought the lifetime sub when Champions Online launched, and I've hardly used it since.

If you already play the game a lot, maybe it''s worth buying (if the game stays around), but I'd say be sure you already love the game before spensing big money.

And, as my father taught me years ago, "Never risk, gamble, or lend money you can't afford to lose"  $200 US is a lot of money to lose if the game closes down in two years, or something.

My opinions only, of course -- you do what you think is right for you.

"giant monster attack"? Sounds suspiciously like the next Marvel Comics event which starts this month "Monsters Unleashed"... hmm.

Considering the ABSOLUTE lack of any signs of developmental life in that game for pretty much years (excepting the last few months where there seems to have been a tiny sliver of activity) anyone who would drop $200 on a lifetime for it would have to either a) have a ton of money and zero sense or b) ridiculous amount of faith in a higher power to provide on their investment with lots of entertainment.

Life time subs could be 10 bucks and it still wouldn't interest me to return.  Being as dated as it is, I think the price they're asking is even more silly.

Sales on lifetime subs are a sure sign that the game is shutting down.

@squidgod2000 only they have been doing this since the game launched and the game is still here. Barely but it is still here which is more than some other games are able to claim /shrugs

Sorenthaz

@BalsBigBrother @squidgod2000 And I guess to some basic level of credit, Cryptic has been tossing around some interesting-ish ideas.  Like the villain onslaught thing last year? Or was that over a year ago? /shrug Was pretty cool in concept.  Execution was chaotic and kind of stupid when multiple raid boss players stacked up, but it was still pretty neat IMO.

Honestly think that could be a neat way to do PvE in an MMO, by having a player control the boss(es).  'course then it would technically become PvP, but it would be interesting how such a thing would be received.   1vX games are slowly becoming more of a thing (Evolve, Dead By Daylight, and Friday the 13th all have one player VS multiple players trying to work together), though two notable ones come to mind that got canned before even seeing daylight (Iirc Bioware was working on some sort of RPG that would have a group of players vs a player who was essentially a DM, and Fable Legends was going to do like 3-4 heroes vs one villain).

I already bought a damn lifetime sub, lost it when they changed over to PWE.

Why would I pay $200 for a lifetime sub to a game that puts out less content than Diablo 3, or FF11 a game supposedly on maintenance mode?

CasualSlacks
CasualSlacks

@bryanjturner Because you like the game and Cryptic won't let you play it the way you want to without subscribing.

bryanjturner
bryanjturner

What are you really paying for, there are no dlcs, or expansions; you're paying for a few minor convieniences.

CasualSlacks
CasualSlacks

Have you played the game before? Subscribing or paying $50 to roll a new character are the only ways to to go Freeform and not limit your power/ability selection to archetypes. As far as I'm concerned, playing Freeform is the only way to enjoy playing.

BritoBruno

@CasualSlacks "As far as I'm concerned, playing Freeform is the only way to enjoy playing."

I wouldn't go so far, but the ATs really need a revamp, and they all should be free.

Point is, FF or not, the game is lacking in several places.

Mansemat
Mansemat

@bryanjturner Actually there are. You get access to all the adventure packs (Serpents Lantern, Demonflame, Resistance), which you normally have to pay for separately in addition to more character slots, powers, archetypes, etc.

Mankeybone

I applaud their optimism and initiative, but can't help thinking that the announcement of a discount to lifetime subscription could have been better timed, given recent news in other parts of the industry.

Pepperzine

Have to question how long a lifetime sub actually would be. Definitely not as long as the word lifetime would imply, perhaps closer to 1 to 3 years.

CasualSlacks
CasualSlacks

I don't see this as lifetime access, I see it as a way to upgrade all your existing characters and any you create to Freeform builds without paying $50 for the ability to delete and reroll them in Freeform slots.

RicharddeLeonIII

@Pepperzine Ive been a lifetime since day one on champions, at least for this one game the lifetime sub was worth it along with star trek online for me :)

@RicharddeLeonIII @Pepperzine Yeah, I was stupid enough not buying an LTS when they had a mac client... and now I'm without an LTS  and a mac client lol...
