Working As Intended: Two decades of Elder Scrolls housing

The Elder Scrolls Online‘s wildly anticipated Homestead patch has rolled out today, introducing housing for the first time for the MMORPG. But it’ll be far from a first for the franchise, which has been well-known for its housing systems for over two decades. In today’s video installment of Working As Intended, we’re taking a trip back through my (often gloriously overmodded) installs of Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and then ESO itself to reminisce about just how far the series’ housing content has come. Bring your own silt strider!

The MMORPG genre might be “working as intended,” but it can be so much more. Join Massively Overpowered Editor-in-Chief Bree Royce in her Working As Intended column for editorials about and meanderings through MMO design, ancient history, and wishful thinking. Armchair not included.

Great video, thank you. I love the look of Leaf Rest, I might have to dust off Skyrim and check it out :)

Used to have a ship-home in Morrowind. You could actually sail it around the sea. Oh my, what an ingenious mod. Sure, sometimes it would glitch and just sail from under you, dropping you into the sea… but still! A ship!

I have always loved housing in TES, and I’m not really a play house kind of guy…right now I’m having a devil of a time deciding on which house I want for ESO….I’m leaning toward the Daggerfall manor it looks like somewhere a Vampiric assassin would live

My Skingrad house in Oblivion was a work of art.

That one day, unfortunately, put all my expertly placed collectibles on the floor after they exploded out of their cases.

Really great video, Bree.

Question for any Skyrim players out there: do any current housing mods feature anything like the Alchemist Hidden Valley from a few years ago? (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/30545/?) This was my favorite mod but it hasn’t been updated in a long time. It was a crafter’s dream, and its Teleportation Door and Bag of Holding Chest were pretty awesome (although cheaty).
