Working As Intended: Two decades of Elder Scrolls housing

The Elder Scrolls Online‘s wildly anticipated Homestead patch has rolled out today, introducing housing for the first time for the MMORPG. But it’ll be far from a first for the franchise, which has been well-known for its housing systems for over two decades. In today’s video installment of Working As Intended, we’re taking a trip back through my (often gloriously overmodded) installs of Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and then ESO itself to reminisce about just how far the series’ housing content has come. Bring your own silt strider!

The MMORPG genre might be “working as intended,” but it can be so much more. Join Massively Overpowered Editor-in-Chief Bree Royce in her Working As Intended column for editorials about and meanderings through MMO design, ancient history, and wishful thinking. Armchair not included.

Last Mod question, when messing with mods in morrowind can you add mods once your game is started and let say the game crashed and you have to reinstall is your save game history ?

Great video, thank you. I love the look of Leaf Rest, I might have to dust off Skyrim and check it out :)

Used to have a ship-home in Morrowind. You could actually sail it around the sea. Oh my, what an ingenious mod. Sure, sometimes it would glitch and just sail from under you, dropping you into the sea… but still! A ship!

I have always loved housing in TES, and I’m not really a play house kind of guy…right now I’m having a devil of a time deciding on which house I want for ESO….I’m leaning toward the Daggerfall manor it looks like somewhere a Vampiric assassin would live

My Skingrad house in Oblivion was a work of art.

That one day, unfortunately, put all my expertly placed collectibles on the floor after they exploded out of their cases.

Really great video, Bree.

Question for any Skyrim players out there: do any current housing mods feature anything like the Alchemist Hidden Valley from a few years ago? (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/30545/?) This was my favorite mod but it hasn’t been updated in a long time. It was a crafter’s dream, and its Teleportation Door and Bag of Holding Chest were pretty awesome (although cheaty).

Yay, another episode of “Bree talks about a bunch of old things”. TES is special to me too, so I look forward to this.

Does this mean there’s going to be an MOP guide/walk-through of the ESO housing above/beyond what’s already been covered? I’m incredibly curious, it’s like a cat and a ball of yarn. So tempting, but it always gets yanked, but…but…the yarn ball…

Did Bree really admit on camera to cheesing it for some of housing in Skyrim? :P

I saw the house I stole in Morrowind in there -I think we all stole the same house on our first playthru though.
Nice look back to memories of the series for those of us that are more *clears throat* experienced and a history lesson for those young punks who started with Skyrim.

That was a great video and lots of memories in there for me. Thank you very much for putting this together and I hope you will continue doing more of these in the future. :-)

I personally would recommend anything that Elianora does in both Skyrim or Fallout 4. Some folks might find them a little busy as she is known for packing her houses full of detail but I haven’t used one that I didn’t like.

More 20-30 min vids from MOP discussing particular aspects of a game or of MMOs in general, please.

ES Housing certainly has come a long way from me leaving little piles of armour in the empty rooms of my Daggerfall house! For Morrowind, like many people, I lived in a mod house. I forget the name now, but there was a neat little quest to go along with the house.
