Jukebox Heroes: Vote for your favorite MMORPG theme songs of all time!

On a couple of past occasions, I’ve amused myself by posting countdown lists of my favorite MMORPG theme songs in this column. I was coming back around to the notion of doing that again when I decided that I should flip things over and have the readers create the countdown instead of me. After all, everyone seems to have an opinion as to which are the best MMO themes out there any time we’ve ever posted a Daily Grind about it, so why not hash it out?

So here’s the plan: Over the next two weeks, I will be accepting your votes for favorite MMORPG themes. I’ll then compile them and create a countdown list based on the most popular ones mentioned, which will be posted in upcoming Jukebox Heroes. If you ever thought that a particular theme didn’t get enough credit or simply want to share the theme tracks that get you revved up or make you nostalgic, here’s your chance!

Let’s go over some ground rules after the jump and then get to voting!

What you need to do

  1. Put together a list up to 10 (although fewer is fine) of your favorite MMO main theme tracks.
  2. Post them in the comments of this article or email them to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject line “MMO THEME VOTING.”
  3. Wait anxiously for the next Jukebox Heroes to come out!

Rules for your votes (important!)

  1. It needs to be a main (title, login) theme song to a full-blooded MMORPG (no survival sandboxes, MOBAs, multiplayer titles, and other fringe online games). Think of your “classic” MMOs.
  2. This is not a popularity contest for the games themselves; this is a popularity contest for the music first and foremost! In other words, don’t vote for games just because you like the games.
  3. You can only vote for a title one time, even if it has different theme songs (i.e., only one EVE Online music theme vote per person).
  4. We’re on the honor system here; don’t try to create multiple accounts or send in multiple voting tallies to game the vote.
  5. If there are multiple theme songs to an MMO, please specify which theme gets your vote (feel free to add a link to a specific YouTube track). If you don’t, then I will assume it’s the original theme by default. This includes MMOs that have remastered their themes.
  6. You can vote for less than 10 tracks but no more than 10. Each one of your votes is counted and weighed the same as the others.
  7. Votes for themes to upcoming MMOs (alpha, beta, or early access) are fine as long as the theme has been made public on the website, SoundCloud, or YouTube.
  8. Likewise, themes for MMOs that have been shut down or were cancelled prior to launch are also acceptable.

Let’s see what happens!

I’m going to be just as curious as the rest of you to see what comes of this vote because while I certainly have my favorite MMO theme tracks, I’m sure that it’s not an identical list to everyone else’s.

Happy voting!

MMOs are meant to be heard as well as seen, and chances are that music ties your memories to these games more than you might realize. Every two weeks Jukebox Heroes listens through a game soundtrack and picks out the highlights to share and discuss. And if you like this column, then don’t miss the author’s MMO music podcast, Battle Bards!

5. Defiance theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbpBDjW9KV0) is very nice too

1. Landmark theme song (first piece of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruPMjZDk9fc)
2. Skysaga City of Light theme since alpha 9, just so cheerful! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMutMIk0yKs
3. Elderscrolls Grahtwood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5y6yOelJY6M – I spent time in there just to relax, the landscape and the music are amazingly soothing
4. Creativerse Caves – gives me the creeps every time, so I kind of hate it, but it is very well done if you think of it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khIB2NPp1_s)

Those are the ones I recall from all the years, sometimes I liked the games more than the above, but this is for themes which are so GOOD they stick.

Hey mod team. Just FYI that when I subscribe to “new replies to your comments” I end up receiving an email when anyone responds to anyone. Not to new posts, but to new replies to anyone.

Where’d my wall o text comment go? Bleh that’ll teach me to hit post without having saved it somewhere first.

Happened to me and some others yesterday. Hopefully it’s hanging out in the moderation que for awhile. Mine was eventually posted, it just took a chunk of time for it to appear.

Indeed, it did eventually appear!

Whilst I’ve played a lot of MMOs, hardly any of them has had a login/main theme that’s really captured me. In fact, only 4 of them did and I’m having a hard time ranking them!

1) For reasons of pure nostalgia, my top pick has to be Eve Online‘s very original launcher theme during Beta and at release of Second Genesis (also known as the Castor release). The track name is Stellar Shadows and it can be found here:- http://www.modenstudios.com/EVE/music/02%20Stellar%20Shadows.mp3 (It’s not easy to find – even CCP’s own Soundcloud account starts from the Exodus login theme!)

2) An exceedingly close second goes to The Secret World‘s launcher theme because with a decent sound setup, it’s excellent and fits the nature of the game’s themes well. This YT vid doesn’t do it enough justice:- https://youtu.be/BS_VCiS4a0o

3) Next would be Black Desert Online‘s main/login theme. Very rousing and epic; very motivational to go off into the world and kick all sorts of backside. Pity the game itself bored me after a week:- https://youtu.be/C789KLQf9q4

4) Finally I’ll include Anarchy Online‘s ‘main theme’, even though technically the launcher didn’t have one and these days its silent until you load up a character or go into creation:- https://youtu.be/MXjurbQnc6A There have been a few tracks fromt he AO soundtrack that have been labelled as ‘main theme’ over time.

Not sure if it counts, as it’s not original game music, but the login from SWG, could listen to it for hours:

Stil gives me chills. It’s the only mmo login music that has stuck in my head and I played WoW for 10 years.

Reader
John Mynard

Hmm, favorite denotes a lot. For instance, The Secret World’s theme really sticks with you and establishes the feel of the game fairly effectively, but Legends of Azeroth kicks me in the nostalgia and gets me fired up for a bit.

That said, I’ll list my top 4 in no particular order:
EVE Online – Below The Asteroids
World of Warcraft – Legends of Azeroth
The Secret World – Main Theme
Age of Conan – The Awakening

10 too many for me. I’ll list top5:

1. Lineage 2 (probably my favourite track out of any MMO. Only other tracks from Lineage 2 can compare. And I didnt even play this game): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zwSyAZTUSY

2. WoW: Pandaria: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-O8CnCLfAc

3. Age of Wushu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9xKuEMYQv4

4. Age of Conan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilAo4M5Z5Ss

5. Grenado Espada: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2eoN8tJVIY

I’ve always been partial to the “Chuck Rock” intro, myself…

That lizard on Bass can really shred.

I’d vote for these MMO main themes:

* Lineage II. (Other Official In-Game Login Screen Versions)
* Revelation Online Live Symphony.
* 9 Dragons.
* Mabinogi (Beta & Korean Versions).
* Final Fantasy XIV.
* TERA.
* Neverwinter.
* Skyforge

Runner up: EVE Online various expansion themes. EVE has too many main themes to be honest, so have a play list.

I’m not sure that Skyforge qualifies for this.

I can’t edit the post, so here’s a link for the Rev. Online score. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7SdTZ5sL0c

And I would also like to add the Grenada Espada theme:

Guild Wars (Prophecies)
Guild Wars 2 (No rules against sequels, heh!)
Lord of the Rings Online
The Secret World

There is only one: Tom Bombadil’s cottage theme from LOTRO. It’s an incredibly ethereal, light, pretty, blessed piece of music. Magical.

I like *epic* about as much as anyone but I think I’ll have to say TSW’s theme because of originality and sheer fittingness of the theme. Of course you can’t mention TSW music without Sleepless Lullaby too.

Not mmo themes but since I’m already typing… These have been stuck in my head for years after playing the games:
Terra’s Theme from FF: https://youtu.be/Gax5ob68L3A
Skeletons in my Closet from 7th Guest: https://youtu.be/aDsoN48HI54
Was quite a bit of interesting music from 7th Guest. The Game is one I recall as well.
The trailer for Phantasmagoria: https://youtu.be/LW_d04W8QWY
Talk about ancient history…

Sorry, but I only ever played a handfull of MMOs and of those precious few hardly any left an impression…

I blame YouTube and the marvelous lists I put together. I hardly ever use ingame music anymore. Sorry composers.

I agree that while I like some of the MMO theme music, they just don’t compare to non-MMO games (for example, ESO’s has a good soundtrack but it doesn’t compare to Morrowind, Skyrim, or even Oblivion’s soundtrack).

Reader
blah blazh

I’m going to give a vote for The Secret World’s theme. It really sets up what the game is about.

Reader
Wanda Clamshuckr

ESO has some incredibly deep thematic music. This one in particular reminds me of Peter Gabriel’s soundtrack from the Last Temptation of Christ.

Reader

EVE has, like, DOZENS of “theme songs”. They make a new one for each expansion. It should win on variety alone. Or be in a different category.

If I had to choose one, it would probably be the Empyrean Age login theme. It was the one that first grabbed me in researching the game (more than 10 years ago!) and actually wasn’t even still in use when I first started (it was Apocrypha by that time).

EVE’s login theme songs are perfect for my tastes: they are minimalist, moody, and ominous. And as I grew up in the late 70s and early 80s, science fiction and “synthesizers” are pretty much synonymous. As much as I love Lord of the Rings’ soundtrack overall more, it can be very bombastic and grandiose. But I don’t need to hear the Carmina Burana every time I hear MMO music.

Reader
Oleg Chebeneev

There are many MMOs that have varied login themes for each expansion. EVE is not unique at that

Reader
Alex Willis

Really? Do you know any MMOs that have more than this?

Boom, nothing can beat PSO’s theme. Period.
Can Still See The Light is also a pretty good one.

AoC is pretty good though.

Reader

Theme songs only? Age of Conan, I suppose. Others might be UO or EQ1, but that’s probably nostalgia talking.

I see it’s Login Themes only, my bad. So I’d just pick the Vana’diel March from FFXI.

My favorite game sound track of all time is Matt Uelman’s Diable II

The Wrath of the Lich King soundtrack is pretty epic. I especially like Arthas, My Son.

Lament of the Highborne gets an appreciative nod from me as well.

I screwed up my HTML last time and my post disappeared, let’s see if the massivelyop overlords deem this comment worthy.

I’m going to go with the only two theme tunes I can even remember:

1. Age of Conan – Dreaming “Ere the World Crumbles”

2. FFXI – Vana’diel March #4

This is a tough one although I’ve always been partial to the FF14 themes (excluding the classic FF theme cause that applies to the SP games as well as the mmorpg) but the main heavensward theme I love if we’re talking about the main theme from the launch trailer.

Also – hate to say it but the varied WoW main themes are usually pretty good. With all that was WoD, the main theme definitely nailed the over arching theme of the expac as well as MoP nailed that asian vibe.

I really wish I could think of anything other than the AAA stuff out there…I know there are others. I cant make a hierarchical list cause my favs are just that…my favs.

I did love the violins for Grizzly Hills both night and day pieces.

Reader
drzaius

The Grizzly Hills music DEFINITELY NAILED the look and feel of that zone. Hell, give me an entire game with that Grizzly Hills vibe and I wouldn’t complain at all :D

Reader
Ryuen

Sure, in order:
Everquest main theme
Everquest 2 main theme
SWTOR main theme
LOTRO Legacy
TSW main theme
SWG main theme
Elite Dangerous main theme

Those are the MMO games I could think of in a few minutes when it comes to music.

Freedom intro for City of Heroes. It is an epic in song form, exposition, rising action and then climax.

And of course, whenever I heard the below on entering Atlas Park, I felt like a G.D. Hero and there were lives to be saved and evil to be thwarted.

Yep, that’s where I’d put my vote.

I started hearing it in my head as I read the title of the article.

I only have 1 vote that is for EverQuest.

The theme song loading in watching trailers it was just so epic and different from any other theme music at the time and really set the world apart from all others. Even the MMOs since have never had such a peaceful and intense musical score. Takes me back Everytime I hear it.
