Emily ‘Domino’ Taylor departs Daybreak and the EverQuest franchise

Emily “Domino” Taylor, long-time EverQuest franchise crafting wizard at SOE and now Daybreak, announced that she’s leaving the studio at the end of the month — just a week after Landmark sunsets, in fact.

“I love SOE/Daybreak & am super sad to leave, but it feels like time to return home to Canada, and remember what shoveling snow is like!” she tweeted. “More news on new job once I start. Fear not, I shall still tweet food and cat photos, and shall lurk around the world of Norrath.”

But don’t worry about Daybreak. “Daybreak has way more staff now than when name changed,” she says. “They just don’t tweet about unannounced stuff so you don’t see em!”

Before I saw the Canada tweet, I wondered whether someone is putting together my dream team: Taylor was one of five devs I listed on my 2014 MMO dream team, along with now-former ArenaNet art god Daniel Dociu, whose departure from ANet was also coincidentally announced this morning. You just need Raph and Kristen Koster and the City of Heroes particle effects guy and we’re good.

Hmmmm…..and neither has announced their plans yet.
It’s official: Bree is hiring up devs to start her dream project with Elf Butt Games.

You can’t blame her? I stopped playing EQ2 a month or so back, i guess when she realized I’ve gone ESO purist there was little reason to remain working there. /jk
As a player I “was” concerned about spending anymore time in EQ2, could only imagine if you work there. Smart Move!
Glad she’s coming home! Seriously what male mmo player didn’t have a bit of crush on her.
All the best Domino.

Man its sad to see veteran developers leave a company. I can see needing a break in this genre after awhile. I wish alot of them could just start their own company. I remember when Earth & Beyond shutdown and how some of those devs wanted to try and get the game from EA and form their own company but we all know how EA is.

God I wish they’d sell this IP to someone who can do something positive with it.

I remember hiring Domino back when she was only a player to decorate my apartment in Qeynos on Antonia Bayle. I was flat out amazed by what she could do with the at that time limited palette of furnishings.

I ended up tearing it apart bit by bit to see how she did it, which led to me doing my own decorating for friends and family.

Only the best wishes for where ever she lands next.

Dominooooo, don’t go! :-(

Well, it’s a done deal I guess. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for our crafting goddess in other ventures. Good luck, come back soon! :) :)

Omuhgerd noooooo! Whoa-oh Domino!

That sucks. She was the Everquest 2 crafting diva dev! But it doesn’t look like Columbus Nova was mental enough to can her at any rate. It sounds like she just got a job closer to her original homeland.

Well, best of luck, Domino, and I hope Daybreak can manage without you!

Oh dear that is a shame and another loss to the Daybreak team. Can’t be that many old school SOE folks left at this point.

Well in any case I hope Domino is able to move onto better things whatever that maybe. I suspect many will be thinking Amazon once snow loses it’s appeal :-)

idk why peopl call this woman a crafting design guru/genius. landmark’s crafting design started bad and only got worse. much worse. it was the epitomy of cynical grind focused design that innundates this genre. it was like what if we could take everythign people complain about in wow clone crafting systems and make it grindy and more self centered and doing things that miss the point of the game.

idk what about that should be applauded. let alone called “genius”.

Probably for her work on EQ2 where she made crafting fun and relevant.

Whoever Domino ends up working for, she’ll be quite a catch. My thanks to her for all the massive work she has done while at SOE/DBG, she’s really been the crafting guru quite apart from her other roles and she communicated well with the players on the forums.

Daybreak has way more staff now than when name changed. They just don’t tweet about unannounced stuff so you don’t see em!

Uh…really? Did they secretly hire a bunch of people? Because there have been a few rounds of layoffs if my memory serves, one of which was pretty deep (like 50ish+ people, that was the first round). Did they staff up elsewhere without telling anyone? I get that they may not all be on social media, and that’s fine, but where are they all hiding?

Because we’re sure as shit not seeing much work being done for live games (have EQ1/2 even seen an update lately?), and given that we have no info on their unannounced project(s), no way of knowing what the hell is even going on.

Curious to see where she ends up (BioWare or Ubi?), but this is yet another in a long strong of losses for DBG : /

EQ1 released their annual expansion last November and they did add a new position to the team a few months back when the brought Ngreth back.

But since then? It feels like the interim updates have slowed down, or at least their communication has slowed down. Feels like I rarely ever see news about EQ1/2 anymore, when I used to see it pretty regularly (not as in like, all the time, but there was a pretty steady flow of news about upcoming content etc.)

A new position is nice, but they’re still way down from what they were before DBG. I’m still confused as to her claim that they have more staff now than when DBG was first formed though >.>

We get patches every month, that’s been the norm for the last decade when they went to annual expansions. I can’t speak on EQ2 since i don’t play it, but the team is doing as well if not better than they were before the change to DBG, the size of the expansions have remained about the same, etc. The only facets of EQ that seemed to suffer a little in EQ1 with the change was they lost the tradeskills and items guys (Chandrok and Jansen) but we really didn’t feel those losses that much. I like to heap crap on DBG for bad decision making by middle and upper management as much as anyone else, but i have to give the EQ1 devs credit, aside from one dev, they have done a pretty stellar job with what they have had to work with.

That’s good to hear about EQ1, I was concerned about it and EQ2 given the dramatically lower levels of communication with media nowadays. Still worried about EQ2, as it continues to appear to be on shakier ground than EQ1, but if EQ1 is still chugging along smoothly then that allays at least one of my fears.

IMO EQ2Wire is the best source for EQ2 related news.
Feldon is the man when it comes to EQ2.

Yeah, I’m aware of them, I just don’t pay close attention to that site given that I don’t really play EQ2.

I primarily keep an eye on the dozens of MMO’s I semi-follow via sites like this, so when there’s news going out to fansites like EQ2Wire (who, as you say, do a great job covering everything EQ2 related!) but not the general gaming/MMO news sites, it tends to fly beneath my radar : /
